Re: Moving to Minnesota for HS Hockey

It goes back a lot further. Both Apple Valley (10-13) and Bloomington Jefferson (14-8-1) had oddly pedestrian records entering the 1981 state tournament; it was because both had to forfeit numerous games for playing ineligible players from out of state. IIRC they thought they had gone through the tr...

Re: State of Hockey's Team

There are plenty of legitimate complaints one can have about Lucia, and how his tenure ended, and I share many myself. No fan can be happy with the state of that program. But this idea that Lucia did "nothing after the Woog kids left" is the kind of argument that will prompt people to resolve future...

Lucia was good coach, he won with Woog’s kids though.
This idea has proven impervious to facts for 16 years, since the 2003 championship, so I'm not sure why I'm bothering, but: the 2003 team was essentially all Lucia's recruits.

This might surprise a lot of people: of the top 50 highest scoring Americans in NHL history on that list, I come up with just five (Housley, Broten, Christian, Cullen, Larson) who played in Minnesota and stayed in high school through their senior year. If you asked me to guess off the top of my head...

I'm not privy to the inner workings of the Lucius family, but according to Billy Hengen, who coaches them at Gentry Academy, as quoted by Chip Scoggins in the Star Tribune: "There were a lot of schools in the Midwest recruiting them . . . t created a frenzy. They were head and shoulders above other ...

Like most people I think there are serious problems that need to be addressed with recruiting and the age at which it starts, but realistically, what are the Gophers supposed to do here? Just decide they're not going to do it and unilaterally disarm? It appears there were plenty of other big-name sc...

Matt Cullen's had a very nice career, but when people like Jeremy Roenick, Keith Tkachuk, Brian Bellows, and Paul Kariya, among others, aren't in yet, there is no way Cullen would ever be seriously considered.

Consolation games weren't always on TV. Before 1983, the first consolation round was Friday afternoon and was not televised, and both semifinals were Friday night. That year they changed the format to the familiar one in which the four teams in the Thursday afternoon session play again Friday aftern...

You'd think he'd have learned his lesson after he said there was no way Lakeville South could beat Duluth East three years ago. He wouldn't be human if he didn't have a soft spot for Edina, particularly when his lineal descendants are playing, but he does appear to try his best to play it straight, ...

Maybe he said more that Loren Nelson didn't use, but Pauly's quotes in the Hockey Hub/Star Tribune article, with a lukewarm "No one likes to see it end that way" followed by the usual stuff about "high energy" and a "charged environment", are a bit disappointing. If I were in his shoes my first word...

Karl hints at the interesting part here, if you're old enough to remember the North Stars days: after being portrayed as the epitome of character and leadership in his junior days, Bellows was interim captain of the North Stars at age 19 . . . and proceeded in the coming years to earn a reputation, ...

It does seem odd that there has been no Edina winner, but it's kind of hard looking back to see any cases where that was a blatant injustice. Dan Carlson is probably the obvious case where you might wonder if he should have won. The award's only been around since '85; Ranheim would almost certainly ...

I realize it's unfashionable to praise him these days because he's viewed as soft and not "fiery" enough, but Joe Mauer was the top pick in the baseball draft, an all-state basketball player, and the USA Today national high school football player of the year, so any discussion about Minnesota's best...

To me one interesting part of the article was how Aaron Bader is an apparent success story for the WHL scholarship package - you see spirited debate, on this board and in other places, about how valuable it is, but at least in one case it appears to have served its exact purpose, as he's now working...

You have to think that Zach Budish's knee injury while playing football in high school has scared some players off who might have also played football. For players with a potential Division I/NHL future, I can't say that's a bad decision; it's up to the kid and his family. Paul Martin, I have read, ...

Focusing only on 13, he has certain gifts that are simply remarkable, but given his size, skating ability, and style of play, it is awfully hard to see him succeeding in the NHL the way the game is played now, and that he went as early as he did was surprising standing on its own regardless of where...

To be fair to Horn, I don't know that you can say he's floundering in the USHL - he's averaging almost a point a game this year, and is committed to St. Lawrence. Being able to stay at home, and then winning a state title in what was a pretty memorable year for Benilde, doesn't seem like something h...
