Re: Two Rivers AA?

I am not suggesting Tier I and II. What would be nice with respect to hockey in particular is a method that serves the purpose for which a second class was created, which was to provide an opportunity for schools that, for economic, historical, and other reasons, would never have any hope of making ...

Re: Two Rivers AA?

The ideal would not be bending the rules, but a world in which the rules made a bit more sense. Such as one in which Mahtomedi and St Thomas Academy were not somehow playing a class below Two Rivers in hockey. Going strictly by class size is administratively the easiest way, and in reality probably ...

Re: Two Rivers AA?

Shots last night were 41-24 Two Rivers so goaltending might be part of it. Somebody has to be the smallest school in a class, but the way it happened to Two Rivers across all sports, not just hockey, was a kick in the shins. Enrollment went up, and they passed a few Mpls/St. Paul high schools whose ...

Re: 2023-2024 New Section Alignment?

I don't think anybody would want Tier I and II the way the did it in 1992 and 1993, which if I remember correctly went solely by won-loss records in the season just concluded, and led to ridiculous things like Rosemount, which most decidedly was not the kind of school two class hockey was meant to h...

Re: 2023-2024 New Section Alignment?

Tier I and Tier II didn't work for hockey when two classes started, and no one should think this is simple. But there simply has to be a way to factor in a school's realistic competitive expectations, given their demographics, history, $, etc., and not go simply by size. The unfortunate fact is that...

Re: 2023-2024 New Section Alignment?

Based on about as good a source as it's possible to have it's essentially certain that Two Rivers is moving to the highest level in everything except football and basketball (and I'm not sure how basketball is being excepted from that). The obvious move, really, when you look at their past hockey se...

Two majors and a misconduct for Duluth East in their season-ending loss to Grand Rapids last night . . . they can't conscionably let this coach return next year, can they?

Thank you for the correction. I found it hard to believe he was back, but it listed him as taking a penalty today, not just being in the lineup, so I wasn't sure what to make of it.

Re: East & Denfeld

If the news article I saw has the name right (I'm not going to use it as the kid's a minor and I could be wrong), and if the Hockey Hub box score for DE's game today is accurate, the kid who did it is back in action already, which I really find hard to believe. If I was that kid's coach, or parent, ...

Judging from football and the size of the geographic net they cast for players there, Eigner would seem to fit the St. Thomas model to a T.

Re: Section Games Friday 3-19-2021

No disrespect intended to Sibley, but apart from everybody emerging healthy it's hard to see anything positive that could come out of having them play Gentry Academy. By way of comparing results against a common opponent, Sibley lost twice to Tartan by a combined 18-1; Gentry beat Tartan 8-1 and ou...

Re: BHS Hockey Podcast - Turning Points

I was once told - it was so long ago I can't remember by whom but I do recall it was someone whose views I trusted - that schools like Benilde and Holy Angels made a conscious decision in the late 90s/early 00s to emphasize sports more primarily for business reasons. Attracting kids who might be att...

Re: Biggest Tourney upsets

Apple Valley's 1981 won-loss record was somewhat illusory as they had to forfeit quite a few games for using an illegal player who had moved from out of state (as we see, transfers are not a new phenomenon . . . ). Jefferson had some additional losses in 1981 for that same reason.

Re: Biggest Tourney upsets

Maybe in '83, but didn't Hill finish unbeaten that year? Couldn't have been too big of an upset.

But definitely not '87. Greenway and Kennedy were the two top-ranked teams all year, and Kennedy best Greenway in the semis.

Re: Biggest Tourney upsets

Columbia Heights in 1983 was a bit of an upset, but those same CH players won the state bantam championship in '80, and Edina wasn't as strong in '83 as they often are, so it wasn't as shocking as it seems now. The awesome name of the Heights goalie is part of why it's so fondly remembered, along wi...

Re: Biggest Tourney upsets

It's 8 years ago so all our memories differ, and I don't for a second dispute that East would have won a multi-game series, probably easily, but my recollection is that the Lakeville South-Duluth East game in 2012 wasn't really dominated by East. Shots were only 27-22 in their favor. South had playe...

Re: Biggest Tourney upsets

I realize the discussion so far has been about state tournament play, but I think RIchfield's upsets of Edina and Minnetonka to get to state in 1986 were the most unexpected wins I've ever seen. Edina was loaded that year.

Re: The Hermantown Thread

"Victimized" might have been an imprecise word, but this is the example I have in mind: a kid who changes school districts for entirely non-athletic reasons, and who is what we might call a "recreational" athlete - no expectation of playing in college, just playing sports for fun. Any broad rule lim...

Re: The Hermantown Thread

They do have that rule if you transfer after 9th grade (although interestingly, the NCAA is actually in the process of weakening, and may do away with, the rule about sitting out a year). Focusing on high-profile hockey players loses sight of the many other kids who are just playing a sport during h...

Re: The Hermantown Thread

The MSHSL didn't create open enrollment; that primarily came from Gov. Rudy Perpich 30 years ago. Once that became the law it's hard to see what the MSHSL could have done. Barring everybody who open enrolls from athletics to prevent problems in high-profile sports would have victimized thousands of ...

Re: 6AA/2AA Section Final Coverage

There's something very nice at the end of the video clips I've seen of the penalty shot. The Blake goalie, on his way to celebrate with his team in the pile, stops to console the Benilde goalie, and they hug each other. Hats off to a classy kid for doing that.

Re: Moving to Minnesota for HS Hockey

It goes back a lot further. Both Apple Valley (10-13) and Bloomington Jefferson (14-8-1) had oddly pedestrian records entering the 1981 state tournament; it was because both had to forfeit numerous games for playing ineligible players from out of state. IIRC they thought they had gone through the tr...

Re: State of Hockey's Team

There are plenty of legitimate complaints one can have about Lucia, and how his tenure ended, and I share many myself. No fan can be happy with the state of that program. But this idea that Lucia did "nothing after the Woog kids left" is the kind of argument that will prompt people to resolve future...
