Re: Andover vs. Elk River

Seems obvious, but...

Hats off to the ER goalie. From the SOG, looks like she got freakin' peppered. Kept them in the game to 4OT. What a game to be at, for those lucky enough to be there.

To clarify one point, MN Hockey regulates the youth side. Minnesota State High School League regulates the high school side.

Crazy all the high powered scorers and how hard it it to put the puck in the net with such good D and goalies. That's been my observation too, and it seems to get harder at the higher levels of competition. Harder at MN Hockey state camp, harder still at national camp. The hockey gets really, reall...

Do any of you feel there would be a negative consequence of skipping the HP 14 process and then jumping in at the HP 15 year? I've seen how many practices my daughter's teammates have been double-booked for this year (her 2002 teammates had to do a LOT of choosing and missing one or the other) and ...

I think it's a fair question to ask: what are they trying to do with the 14 and 15 programs? Just browsing the D6 website, it looks like the 15's are paying (so far) $565 (includes the $50 to USAH and MNH for the high school kids) for 13.5 hours of practice, a few scrimmages, and a tournament. Inde...

HP14 / HP15

New thread.

I was going to complain about how poorly our district's practices are run, and about the stupidity of scheduling games during school hours (and parent's normal working hours). But I won't. Let's keep it positive, eh?

Jumping in late here... My daughters had great experiences in HS hockey. At relatively blue-collar suburban public high school, not the cake-eater public or private schools. Yes, things do really tail off in exurbs & rural parts of the state. The focus should be on whether your girls can have a ...

AAA U14 - Best Tourneys in region?

My daughter's coach was asking me what are the best U14 tournaments in the Minnesota area. I never gave it much thought. I'm sure there are some informed opinions out there. Which tourneys have the highest end teams? Fire away.

D10 brackets are here. http://district10hockey.org/tournaments/ Congrats to Centennial 12UA for an epic 4-overtime 2-1 victory vs. Blaine in the opening round. As much as it hurts to say "Congrats to Centennial," it really was a great game. Shots were about dead-even through much game.

Re: How to save girls Hockey

1. Large associations are selecting A teams with 10-13 skaters. Agree that's a bad idea. Associations should split between A & B evenly, to distribute the ice time as equitably among players as possible. 3. Even with smaller teams the benches get shortened. Agree that's a bad idea. Coaches shou...

This all comes off as tortured use of formulas to tell a story that a few would like to have told. It discards a lot of quality out state athletes because they don't happen to reside in section 6AA. That was my main criticism of only looking at the top 30 SOS teams. If you look back to last year's ...

LuckyEP: using GAA to adjust goals (or points) seems like a good approach to get at scoring prowess. MNHock: KRAPPI & KRAPGI used season-aggregated (average) points (or goals) per game, and average opponents' SOS. One could adjust points or goals for individual opponent's SOS, but last year's ed...

Comment on the original post: in general I think it's a bad idea to throw out data. If, hypothetically, someone has 80 points and plays for the team with the 31st toughest SOS she gets overlooked, while someone with 40 points playing for the team with the 29th toughest SOS makes the list. I'd say yo...

If an association has board positions for a Mites director, a Squirt director, a Peewee director, a Bantam director, and a Girls director; inequality is built into the by-laws. Maybe, but... A lot of mites are girls, so the mites director serves girls and boys. A few squirts & peewees are girls...

I think the decision is different for an 8th grader vs. 9th grader. 9th grade, you're in high school, and JV is part of the high school experience. When my oldest was in 8th grade, it seemed like most U14 teams were predominantly 8th graders, and most 9th graders were playing HS (JV or V). I'd say U...

I heard that a few years back, the T-breds transitioned from a mostly Midwest schedule to a mostly long-distance schedule with a lot of games in the Northeast. Big increase in cost to families, justified by better hockey competition. I'm sure families hit hard by the recession would not consider for...

Re: Don't ignore academics

In evaluating successful high school hockey programs I suggest you also consider the quality of the college institution where the kids attend-- by that measure Blake stacks up quite well with at least 10 D-1 players at one of the Ivies--there may be more--by my count they include the following: ......
