fighting
I think the previous post regarding fighting is an example of people getting the two leagues confused. The Upper Midwest HS Elite League (often referred to in this forum as Elite I)--which as a previous poster pointed out--has had two fights in four years, is not the league where any goonery is taki...

Re: Point Taken
The problem is that the guy that SW had the last two years was a young enthusiastic guy from a city school (South) who had playing experience at the USHL/D-1/D-3 levels and assistant experience that included a girls state championship with Blake. As problematic as the situation in Hopkins is, the Ba...

Re: Elite League
Absolutely the USHL offers even better competition. And for some kids, it's their best option. But, what we were facing three years ago when the league started was kids looking to do more than HS and feeling obligated to go, even though they weren't ready because there were no other options. Of the ...

Re: Elite League
I believe that all seven were enrolled at AHA at that point. As far as Lucia, let's realize that every year about 10 kids (as opposed to the 40 and rising that we were seeing before the Elite League) are going to leave HS for juniors. Certainly, if Tony leaves that will not mean that the Elite Leagu...

I would also argue that by keeping these players at their highs schools, it does help make other players better (better competition, etc.)

Re: Elite League
This isn't a league designed to make EVERYONE better high school players, it's a league designed to help Minnesota's TOP players develop, while staying at home, being exposed to college and pro scouts before returning to their high school. The league can't be the everone's answer to everything. I ca...

Re: Player Development
I guess I don't agree that a player can only develop through practice sessions. I also know that many people a lot smarter than me feel the same way.

Again, no one from the league is claiming to turn mediocre players into stars. However, many players (most recently Mitch Ryan) show significan...

Re: eagles fly
The selection process is probably never going to be perfect. We're always working on it, however, actively scouting the actual HS season and also using other opportunities like the Select tryouts as criteria AND picking the final few through tryout, seems to be more successful than relying on a few ...

Re: Packer
I read your post...

If you read the article, you've seen the facts: more than 40 players left their high schools for Juniors, Ann Arbor, etc. in the first year of the league in 2002 (when it was still very much in the conceptual stage) as part of a rising trend. In the past two years, that nu...

Snapshot-
You're right. The Elite League is a viable alternative. The only MN HS kids (including those who left) ranked in the last NHL draft ranking played in the league. In addition, a lot of these kids are committing to D-1 schools such as Yale, Minnesota, Dartmouth, Colgate, St. Cloud St., No...

One problem, I don't think Wyman and Engasser "left" Minnetonka. They both played youth hockey there, but from what I know, have been at Blake for quite some time. Wyman, for instance, is a third-generation Blake player.

Re: not good
I'm not sure how many freshman are ready to be highly competitive at the varsity level, let alone at this level. Outstanding sophomores would definitely have a shot, but I think it's only natural that the league skew a little older. I don't think it's accurate to generalize this year's group as olde...

Re: How Are Elite League Players/Teams Chosen?
Players are chosen a combination of ways. Regular season performance is one of the biggest factors. League staff talks with HS coaches and seeks recommendations on players not only on their team, but opposing teams. In addition, staff actively scouts games and reviews statistics. The program also wa...
