Re: Which Varsity programs utilize their JV teams well?

Karl may have more insight, but I think this may be a year that DE will have a revolving door between JV and Varsity -on 4th line- at least in the beginning of the season. This was pretty much the case last season and in a decent number of other seasons in East's history. Randolph has never been af...

Re: Will Curt Giles ever get his due?

It's interesting to see how many different styles there are of being an effective coach. Giles is as reserved as they come. Randolph isn't particularly vocal on the bench either, but has a comfort level with the media. Both are very intense in their own ways. Lechner, less so, but he does it with hi...

Re: Will Curt Giles ever get his due?

This thread got me thinking more broadly over how we measure coaches' success. One way to go at this is to pose a bunch of questions over traits that some people might equate with coaching success. Obviously we can look at won-lost records but that isn't always reflective of what coaches do with wha...

Re: Moving to Minnesota for HS Hockey

While there may be more high school age players moving into Minnesota now, this isn’t exactly a new issue. If memory serves, both Eastview and Eagan had kids move into the district from other states during some of their respective tournament runs. The 2000-01 (?) Jefferson team featured in the book...

Re: YHH Summer HS Hockey Podcast 2019

Questions about business models and the direction of youth sports or parent actions are perfectly fair game, but let's leave the personal attacks out of this.

My only other comment on this whole topic is that, if profit margin were all that were driving YHH, this podcast surely would not exist.

RIP Greg Trebil

MN HS hockey has lost one of its most iconic coaches of the past several decades. Greg Trebil was a vital piece of the Bloomington Jefferson dynasty years as the bantam coach and made waves when he jumped ship for the Holy Angels job, where he won two state titles and built the Stars into a powerhou...

Re: YHH Summer HS Hockey Podcast 2019

I think anyone with a conscience who covers youth and high school athletics has to wrestle with the question of how much attention is too much. We all love the game and want to draw attention to good stories, and obviously there's a market for it, but we don't want to go over the top, either. One pe...

Re: 7AA 2019-2020

Correct, East only plays Cloquet twice, and that's been the case for the past 15+ years. There were some stretches before that when they'd play Rapids twice, and of course they would play several local teams twice back in the Lake Superior Conference days. Cloquet is certainly the Hounds' most histo...

Re: YHH Summer HS Hockey Podcast 2019

With all due respect the Braemar concession stand, the State Fair offers somewhat tastier fare. (Believe it or not, hockey is usually secondary when it comes to my summer travel schedule!)

Was good to dust things off and start to get ready for the season ahead, though...it's not that far off!

Yeah, on the surface, it appears they will struggle to score goals. We'll find out if Coach Mike has a rabbit up his sleeve. Lee When hasn’t he a rabbit up his sleeve? He seems, year in and year out, to be successful with what he has....without a doubt there are programs who lose kids and fall in d...

I am not sure this is true. “Or remains stagnant...” implying it is currently stagnant without much in projections of it trending upwards. Thanks for reading the rest of the sentence. I read the whole post - I don't think it is stagnant either..... I'd say most of the places that play AA in hockey ...

Just lurking about, as I often do in summer. Gotta save my bullets for November.

Not that I'm not giving it some thought...decent chance a podcast will appear before the end of the month which will force me to start getting things into gear.

While I've probably been guilty of this once or twice on this forum, I will agree that "I know some secret big news but am going to leave you all in suspense and not share any details on it" statements are rather annoying.

Re: The Hermantown Thread

What would be an interesting statistic is what percentage of a team’s roster is on free and reduced lunch. I know for Greenway’s full roster there is only one player (bench player) who might be on free/reduced lunch. This f/r lunch figure has a significant impact on the pool of kids that will/can g...

Re: Death of inner ring suburbs hockey

Here are F/R rates for the most recent year for public high schools with boys' hockey, according to MDE. I tried to do the math for co-ops (including adjustments for 7-12 schools) when possible but can't guarantee everything. Obviously size matters, but there are some pretty strong correlations. I w...

Re: Death of inner ring suburbs hockey

Karl, it is not just inner ring suburbs but also tier 2 cities like Rochester, St. Cloud, and Duluth. Economics play a huge factor there as well. You can make a very good argument that the F/R lunch rate is the #1 factor in hockey success. No doubt--it's easier to track historically in the metro si...

Thanks to Stang for doing my job for me. I might have to do a mini-update of that post next year since it will have been 5 years since I wrote it. I threw up some HS-centric thoughts on UMD over the weekend: https://apatientcycle.com/2019/04/15/doggedness/ I made a mention of the Hermantown-UMD connection there, which is obvious. Looking back at recent rosters, the only real front-line D-I players over the past decade from Hermantown who didn'...

Re: Pridictability of Class AA - state

Interesting backstory on the A/AA split and its advocates. (I was in diapers when that happened. We're at the point now where a couple generations have no memory of single-class hockey.) It made me wonder how many more teams would've gone to state over the past decade if we still had single class ho...

Re: 7AA 2019-2020

While the youth results can be a decent guide, we also have to remember that HS teams are usually drawing from three or even four grades to build out their roster instead of one to two, and that not everyone develops at the same rate. That said... Andover should be the favorite. Plenty of depth up f...

Hot take alert: several of the sections were rather predictable dating back to the single class era. That said, we pretty much knew how our season was goi...
