Re: Transfers for 2019-20 season

While I've probably been guilty of this once or twice on this forum, I will agree that "I know some secret big news but am going to leave you all in suspense and not share any details on it" statements are rather annoying.

Re: The Hermantown Thread

What would be an interesting statistic is what percentage of a team’s roster is on free and reduced lunch. I know for Greenway’s full roster there is only one player (bench player) who might be on free/reduced lunch. This f/r lunch figure has a significant impact on the pool of kids that will/can g...

Re: Death of inner ring suburbs hockey

Here are F/R rates for the most recent year for public high schools with boys' hockey, according to MDE. I tried to do the math for co-ops (including adjustments for 7-12 schools) when possible but can't guarantee everything. Obviously size matters, but there are some pretty strong correlations. I w...

Re: Death of inner ring suburbs hockey

Karl, it is not just inner ring suburbs but also tier 2 cities like Rochester, St. Cloud, and Duluth. Economics play a huge factor there as well. You can make a very good argument that the F/R lunch rate is the #1 factor in hockey success. No doubt--it's easier to track historically in the metro si...

Re: Death of inner ring suburbs hockey

Thanks to Stang for doing my job for me. I might have to do a mini-update of that post next year since it will have been 5 years since I wrote it. And I'm probably capable of making better maps now, too! It'll be very interesting to track the inner ring suburbs in the coming years, especially in pla...

Re: State of Hockey's Team

I threw up some HS-centric thoughts on UMD over the weekend: https://apatientcycle.com/2019/04/15/doggedness/ I made a mention of the Hermantown-UMD connection there, which is obvious. Looking back at recent rosters, the only real front-line D-I players over the past decade from Hermantown who didn'...

Re: Pridictability of Class AA - state

Interesting backstory on the A/AA split and its advocates. (I was in diapers when that happened. We're at the point now where a couple generations have no memory of single-class hockey.) It made me wonder how many more teams would've gone to state over the past decade if we still had single class ho...

Re: 7AA 2019-2020

While the youth results can be a decent guide, we also have to remember that HS teams are usually drawing from three or even four grades to build out their roster instead of one to two, and that not everyone develops at the same rate. That said... Andover should be the favorite. Plenty of depth up f...

Re: Pridictability of Class AA - state

Hot take alert: several of the sections were rather predictable dating back to the single class era. Like many of you, I recall ye olden days fondly and cherish my memories of playing for a small school going up against the big boys in sections. That said, we pretty much knew how our season was goi...

Re: Hello. My name is BeauKnowsHockey…

Welcome, Beau! As has been alleged on this thread, he and I have chatted recently. Anyway, as someone who's done some dives into old stats and tried to dig some up here and there myself, I think his project is pretty great, and the more of this we can get, the better. I'm sure there are some people ...

Re: White Bear Lake, Moorhead, South Saint Paul

In a lot of ways we talk about DE as an Edina killer, but they have also been a WBL QF killer in multiple scenarios where WBL seemed about to breakthrough. East absolutely stole the 2005 game. The Bears had a senior Justin Braun, a junior David Grun (a dominant HS player), and several other future ...

Rather than litter the Forum with a bunch of my own stuff, I decided to create one thread for all of it. Re: Rivalries & one-way hatred

Some stray answers: 1. High school hockey is driven by high schoolers, who are not always known for nuanced thinking. 2. HS hockey is hyper-local and tribal in a way that even college rivalries may not be. There might be a few kids on the Alabama and Auburn rosters that grew up rooting intensely for...

Re: Cathedral vs Greenway

Difficult as the (correctly called) Greenway no-goal and SCC goal replay sequence was, I thought the real turning point in this game was Greenway's inability to do much with the major penalty in the 2nd . . . Yep. By the time the major occurred, Raiders already looked gassed. They could not sustain...

Re: Greenway Raiders

The class A tourney has had some epic Friday afternoon’s in the last 10-15 years. I can appreciate the depth of talent in this years AA field, but it hasn’t been all that exciting. And this isn’t the first year that has been the case. I know this is a generality, with plenty of exceptions, but it s...

Re: AA title: Edina vs EP

Give Eden Prairie credit, they've given us the best three finals of this past decade (2011, 2016, 2019). Their aggressive forecheck really set the tone, and they used their depth to their advantage. If they'd managed to make it 2-0, I don't think Edina comes back. But they let the Hornets hang in th...

Re: AA Consolation: Duluth East vs Lakeville South

A good ending to the season for an East that provides some, well, consolation after Thursday's loss. Would've loved to see this group get a crack at Edina, but you gotta finish when it matters. Thanks to the seniors for their contributions...I'll be along with a longer post there in time. Never any ...

Re: Eden Prairie vs Blaine

Had heard Blaine is deep 3 lines and had the best line in the state. They aren't and they might have. Unfortunately they weren't playing their best hockey today. From what I saw they would also struggle against Edina's puck possession game. All teams did. I agree with this. Blaine was the one AA To...

Re: St. Thomas Academy vs Edina

This game really turned when Edina turned it into a shooting gallery late in the first. In early stages I thought STA might do enough to stick around, and obviously they did a good job late of dialing up the pressure and making it somewhat close. But they had that stretch where Edina just took over,...

Re: AA QF: #5 Duluth East vs. #4 St. Thomas Academy

As others have said, East had their chances, but as has been the case all season, the finishing wasn't there. The Lyle penalty did seem to affect their physical edge some, but they still were in a position to win this game if they bury a chance or two. Hard to win games when you don't score 5-on-5. ...
