Re: 2021-22 Coaching Openings

I had to check Karl's and YHH"s twitter feed to see who broke Randolph stepping down at Duluth East first :) Karl by 4 minutes! When it comes to the Hounds, nobody scoops Karl. Nobody. Lee  Tony probably could've, but he's a good journalist who needs to do his due diligence. I have n...

Re: 7AA 2020-2021

So long old friend... We'll miss ya in 7AA, Al. Might have to venture over to an Elks section final at the Sanford Center or in St. Cloud someday, as the schedule allows. And welcome, Blaine and Coon Rapids. The Bengals, having finally run out of Brodzinskis, may not be the powerhouse of the past d...

Re: MN Hockey Hub Class A top 16 for 2021-2022

Well, there you go, two contrasting views. I won't dispute that the list of very top teams is a little bit shorter. That said, I think the talent level on the not-top teams is somewhat higher than it used to be, even if the Brody Lambs of the world are less likely to stick around for their senior ye...

Re: MN Hockey Hub Class A top 16 for 2021-2022

There is no point in ranking Dodge County, because Brody Lamb has about a 1% chance of returning. Breck also graduates a ton. Morgan and Theissen return on D, but the top two forward lines are all gone. It will be a rebuilding year (or two) for sure. The Class A landscape looks bleak for next seaso...

Re: Section Realignment

Looks like the new sections leaked a little while back were pretty much accurate in A, but there was a lot of jumbling in the north metro in AA. Nothing is perfect, but in general I really like the direction of the changes. 2AA and 6AA are probably always going to be some of the deepest sections in ...

It'll be going up on YHH as well.

Re: Section Realignment

One thing that struck me up north is Duluth Marshall continuing to opt up to AA. Wise has proven to be an excellent coach (and at the college level, to boot), and I’m sure they have longer term visions, but I figured DM would be tired of taking beatings and drop back down for a while to gain some t...

Re: Section Realignment

It's not perfect, of course, but I do sort of like the leaked A alignment. 6A may be a bit top-heavy, but the competitive balance across it and 5A is a clear improvement over where we were. And I think some people are inflating how good Litch and Hutch were, and the implications of their move to 2A....

Re: HS Hockey Conn Smythe

No doubt Blake was the best player on this Eden Prairie team, and could be deserving of this award as well. I leaned toward Batch because of his hat trick and game-winner in the semifinal, which I thought was the game of the Tourney, and because he kept going in the title game even when clearly hurt...

It doesn't look like we're getting any, so here's my stab at ballots for each class if I did have them: Class A F: Barrett Hall, Damon Furuseth, Zam Plante, Brody Lamb, Jaksen Panzer, Landon Parker D: Trey Ausmus, Easton Hammill, Connor Brown, Zach Reim G: Dane Couture, Alex Timmons Class AA F: Cart...

HS Hockey Conn Smythe

Based on a discussion we had on our season finale podcast, I figured I'd start a thread on potential winners of a playoff-specific high school hockey award. (Danny has graciously suggested we name this the Pat White Memorial Award, though at last check Pat was still alive and kicking.) In honor of P...

One of the most fun shows we've ever done, despite the rather epic length. Re: Section 7AA Final - Andover vs Grand Rapids

While we’re debating whether anyone in the section can compete with Andover going forward, this seems like an appropriate place to drop in a link to Karl’s postmortem dissection of East’s season: https://apatientcycle.com/2021/03/18/incomplete/ With all due respect, I don’t necessarily share his op...

Re: Class A Tournament Seeding

Kind of a weird situation in which Little Falls almost certainly has the 4th-best resume of all the entrants on paper, but has lost two the 1A entrant and the 5A entrant. And Delano might be playing the best hockey of anyone outside the big three right now. So Litch is really the only team that does...

Re: Official State seedings

With how Moorhead has been playing lately, I'm not sure there's any one team that's necessarily an easy draw in the AA field. All of them are at least capable of causing problems. Moorhead, Wayzata, and STA as the unseeded squads, and Andover at #5. Your guess is as good as mine on how they order th...

Re: Section 7AA Final - Andover vs Grand Rapids

I thought the writing was on the wall when Rapids couldn't convert on their three PPs in the first period. Offensive firepower was always this team's Achilles Heel, and when they didn't take the early chances they got, it spelled trouble. Garrett Schifsky was the difference-maker, along with Will La...

2014: Grand Rapids hit your daily double with Avery Peterson and some Shepard kid (who had a better college career) Yep, that would be the only one. Re: Mr. Hockey & Brimsek finalists

Some year a school may hit the Daily Double by winning Mr hockey and the Brimsek awards. The hat trick would be to win both awards and the state championship. The Grand Slam would be winning both awards on the boys & girls side. 2014: Grand Rapids hit your daily double with Avery Peterson and some ...

As always, great stuff. Epic length pod, especially for that late in the evening (and early morning). Kudos to Karl (and also I suppose to Tony, even if only out of spite) for picking the correct winner of the 2A final. I am obviously biased, but Courneya is a superior player to Brown, and n...

Does anyone know when the last time an 8 seed beat a 1 seed in a section quarterfinal?
1-seed Little Falls lost to a 9-seed, St. Cloud Apollo, in 2011.

Otherwise, the answer is St. Paul Johnson over Tartan, 2009.
