Re: Class A SF #1 seed 7A Hermantown (19-8-2) vs #4 seed 4A Mahtomedi (18-11-0)

Mahtomedi jerseys are hideous with the number on front and "Zephyrs" on the back. Look like practice jerseys.

Re: 2024 Girls State High School Hockey Tournament

3rd period meltdown against andover in 22. Undisciplined is the word I'd use to sum up the last few years of Tonka hockey in the state tournament and that's all on coaching. That 3rd period meltdown (and dumb penalty) and the way the coaches reacted was a perfect snapshot. And the constant barking ...

Re: 2024 Girls State High School Hockey Tournament

I'd have to watch the replay but the second goal seemed like a fluke, Distad found a loose puck and whacked at it and it went off the defender's stick and over the goalie's head. The first Tonka goal was a great effort and snipe by Finnegan seconds after Edina had that amazing pass and goal by Halvo...

Re: 2024 Girls State High School Hockey Tournament

It isn't anything new to see an Edina goalie look a little shaky in the semi only to play better in the final. No offense, but... what? Edina has had the most consistent goaltending in girls hockey for the last several years with arguably the best - certainly most decorated - goalie in state histor...

Re: 2024 Girls State High School Hockey Tournament

Agree about Tonka coaching, they have the best talent every year and blow it every year. The difference between the two head coaches in that game tonight was glaring. How long will Tonka parents put up with this? Zahn was the best goalie in the country tonight. She played an amazing game, probably t...

Re: Games of the Night

Dodge County looks like they could make a run at the class A title. They crushed Northfield (SOG: 42-12) and had very competitive games with Orono and Centennial. Not sure how dependable the goaltending is but they have a few nice skaters. I'd say today answered my question, goaltending is more tha...

What a fantastic game between Dodge County and Orono. Impressed by both teams, sad to see a loser. Dodge County goalie was phenomenal.

Re: 2024 Girls State High School Hockey Tournament

So question for those of you paying more attention than me. Should we be worried with the plethora of 8th and 9th graders on the varsity teams of the state participants? Andover is the only team I've seen made up of mostly juniors (a ton) and seniors. Which is what you normally see on the guys side...

Re: 2024 Section Tournaments

Ahh, yes, I forgot about Hill-Murray always hosting at Aldrich even if they're not the higher seed. Maybe that will change when St Thomas builds their arena? In 4A, I went back and it appears the championship game is hosted by the higher seed. Last year Simley hosted at their home Vet's arena, the y...

Re: 2024 Section Tournaments

North losing was shocking, they had a potent offense but, like a few other games recently, their goaltending seems to have let them down. I didn't see the game, going off of stats. Good for Rosemount for getting back to state, I'm afraid they will be in running time however as they're not a very str...

Re: 2024 Section Tournaments

Or cap AA at top 40 or so enrollments plus opt-ups and put the rest in A. The enrollment cut-off is far too arbitrary particularly in this sport. Not sure what the exact solution is but MSHSL has to think outside the box and avoid these games.

Re: 2024 Section Tournaments

Ditto for New Prague, outshot 72-5 against Tonka. If we're gonna keep having these matchups, go to a play-in system so the top seeds get a bye and avoid these embarrassing games that are no good for anyone.

Re: Games of the Night

SOS for South Suburban teams in particular is a bit of a vacuum as over 70% of their games are against one another. But I agree with what I think you're hinting at, I fully expect both North and South to make it but will be overwhelmed by the top teams at state. (Even though they both have a quality...

Re: Games of the Night

Upset chances: 1 Northfield - had them as the favorite prior to Tuesday 1 Farmington - since the Tonka thumping they've been mediocre to bad; young team, good future 2 EP - would love to see Tonka not make it but ain't happening 2 HF - beat every cupcake on their schedule, lost to almost every decen...

Re: 1AA and 8AA

Football does not seed 1-32 and have #1 vs #32, etc. They have four sections of eight teams so the brackets are somewhat pre-determined. The football method is definitely better in terms of attempting to get the "best" eight teams to the state tournament, but not perfect. That's better than how it's...

Re: Games of the Night

Some big holiday tournament games this week. From yesterday: Holy Family outshoots Stillwater 2:1 but loses 3-0. Moorhead hangs tough with Tonka. Strom only gives up 1 on 34 shots but that's all Andover needed. Edina somewhat surprisingly crushes GR 7-2. Warroad takes down Rosemount 5-4, no stats ye...

Re: Games of the Night

Holy Family record vs top 10 teams (at the time) in the past 4 years: 2-17-2. (Maple Grove and Blake) Wow, I knew they struggled against the better teams but that stat says a lot. Grand Rapids vs Duluth- GR 5-1 Holy Angles vs BSM- BSM 4-1 Orono vs Maple Grove- Orono 2-1 Farmington vs Minnetonka- 87...

Re: Games of the Night

I have bought in to what Coach is doing with the girls in EP. A huge culture change from the previous regime and it’s really showing on the ice. Don’t know him personally, but he is a genuine human who is active in the community, respectful and seems to be preaching hard work and character as his k...

Re: Games of the Night

St. Paul/Sibley brings all the public schools in St. Paul together with Sibley. My guess is total enrollment is pretty large (much higher than the number stated above) for both programs but that doesn't tell the whole story. You are correct, I forgot to include Highland's enrollment in the math, so...

Re: Games of the Night

Fun discussion. Sadly, I think the bell signaling the death of community-based girls high school hockey has been ringing for awhile. I favor more co-ops because the logical thing to "fix" girls hockey - strengthening and enforcing transfer rules - will never happen. So rather than wondering who wins...

Re: Games of the Night

First, how is that combo allowed to happen. Another silly combo. Not to detract from the point of the thread, but co-ops are very prevalent in girls hockey. And, in pretty much every case, for the better. Many co-ops are for different reasons of course, but I think (hope) we're going to start seein...

Re: 23 state tournament winners

Go to the state HS league website and go look at the section assignment for 6A football. It is clearly geographical. I think you are getting districts and sections mixed up. Districts are set up by Class/Color for scheduling purposes since football has done away with conferences. Sections are set u...

Re: 23 state tournament winners

they are split into 4 sections based on geography If true (not saying you're wrong but I know I heard about the "upper" and "lower" divisions somewhere) the geography doesn't make a lot of sense. And the naming scheme (Gold North, Gold South, Maroon North, Maroon South) makes zero sense unless Gold...
