Jordan Leopold was a good choice for the Hobey Baker Award. And, I'd be much more impressed by an undefeated season if the team actually played the best competition in the state.

I'll go with the 1989 championship. Re: BEST/WORST TEAM MONIKER
I think the two dumbest names are easily the Thunderhawks and the Blaze. Note that both of those two are new names given because you can't call your team the Indians or the Braves anymore.

Re: Shots
I assume it's the guy running the scoreboard. I know the people who do the scoreboard/penalty box at BIG both work for the school district (one's a teacher, one's the school psychologist). I think they do a pretty good job. But, I do agree that at some places they seem to just be guessing. It seems ...

Re: Nicest HS hockey venue
I've been to two nice rinks lately. One was the new one in Elk River that was completely packed and had a great atmosphere. The other was Pagel Center in Minnetonka that had only decent attendance but was still a pretty cool place. Certainly better than that barn they used to play in, anyway.
</p...

Re: johnson
Is there any question anymore that Jacques Lemaire is just sticking it to the league that shuns him by making Matt Johnson the captain? People like to cry and whine about the trap and all that, and about how people using the trap play boring hockey and clutch and grab and all that, but the Wild, usi...

Re: NHL is getting better -
I think one of the biggest reasons that you've seen scoring totals decline from earlier levels is the improvement in goaltending. It was like the goalies were obsessed with standing up and kicking at the puck. Nowadays goalies are much better trained and prepared, and that is part of why we haven't ...

Re: best coach
Ask the state high school league if he's a recruiter. They went over that program with a fine toothed comb, and they didn't come up with anything. Funny how Corey's tranfer to Greenway is legit in your eyes, but not kids going to a private school in Richfield.

The only reason somebody should get banned is for personal threats or something of that nature. Simply having an opinion with which you disagree is no reason for banning anyone. And, for what it's worth, he can't remember his password, he wasn't banned.

Re: best program
Good points, Joe. It's good to get an inside perspective. I would think that the best thing for all parties involved would be a Duluth East style no-conference-play schedule, at least for football. There is always the problem that then the kids won't get a shot at a conference title (of course, if t...

Re: best program
7 titles, maybe, but 7 state titles, I think not. We can all agree--at least I sure hope we can all agree--that winning the Class A "State" tournament is not nearly the same thing as winning the Class AA tourney, and I can't imagine any reason why we should start talking about I Falls havi...

Re: Best Program
I certainly won't argue with Roseau being up there on top. I might have a few years ago until they won the state tourney again, but they've shown their program can still be a powerhouse even with lower numbers than many teams that play Class A. All I was saying is that it's silly to compare how team...

Re: Roseau ... end of story
Well, like I say, I don't know how to judge this properly. But, I think you have to give some sort of thought to whether a program even existed over a certain period. I mean, Jefferson wasn't even a school until 1970. I would say that, within reason (read: excluding very, very new schools like Eastv...

Re: Best program ever?
Judging performance based on appearances in the state tournament is not the best way to do it, in my opinion. Just look at this year, for example. Would anyone--ANYONE--have said that Lakeville's state tournament team was better than Duluth East's non-tourney team? Of course not. It all depends on y...

Re: Who was the best H.S. player ever from MN?
Pohl set all those records playing against Class A competition and in the Class A tournament. I'd have liked to have seen guys like Neal Broten and Henry Boucha play in that league in those years (when Red Wing was it, period) and seen how many goals they scored. True, his D-1 stats are great, I won...

Re: actually
If you go by age, just by looking at the rosters (no math done by me, just a ballpark figure), it appears that the Gophers and Michigan are roughly the same. But, yes, those players that are older on Michigan's roster are sophomores and juniors, while the Gophers old guys are seniors. To me this isn...
