Class A Rankings 2-12-17

1. [1] Hermantown (21-1-1) Beat Superior and Brainerd then took OT to beat Bemidji. 2. [2] Delano/Rockford (19-3-1) Close loss to Holy Family on the road and then crushed Waconia. No more challenges before sections. Should be 2 more wins this time next week. 3. [3] Breck (18-3-2) Beat Benilde on the...

Re: Class A Rankings 2-5-17

The fact that your number 6 team in the state lost to number 1 by 7 goals and number 3 by 6 goals makes me already start picturing how ugly some of the first round games are going to be at this years tournament.... The top 3 for sure (maybe 4) teams seem to be capable of beating teams that round ou...

Class A Rankings 2-5-17

We're getting toward the end of the season and not much is changing at this point. It looks like Hermantown may be the best team in the state and there is a clear divide between the top 4 and the rest of the state. Hopefully someone can give Hermantown a game at the X. 1. [1] Hermantown (18-1-1) The...

Has this event always been the weekend before St Patrick's Day and this just happens to be the first time it has ever landed on the same day as the hockey finals? Response "... I'll say it again. Tartan will be the 4th seed in 4AA and won't lose again this regular season. Woodbury is 5th at best. Heck, if White Bear loses a couple more games (which they easily could), Tartan could be the 3 seed. Before Tartan played Mahtomedi i said if they win this game they will win out...

Re: Falls beats Greenway

Falls beat Greenway 4-3 in OT. Falls was the better team. It actually should not have gone into OT as the refs missed a Falls goal as it barely crossed the goal line. It was clearly a goal before a Greenway reached in and pulled it out. Wow. Just gone done watching an excellent Virginia-Eveleth gam...

Class A Rankings 1-29-17

Well, things beyond the top 10 have gotten interesting and there are really 10 or so teams that could fill those last 5 spots depending on how you weight different aspects of their schedule. Hermantown looks like they may be the best team in the state and there are another 5 teams who look like they...

Has anyone with any pull in any MN sport ever suggested a playoff system that you had to qualify for? The idea that every team 'makes the playoffs' is a foreign concept in some states. It seems to me that would solve a lot of issues in a lot of sports...

I don't see this hurting any program if everyone continues to play their conference schedule regardless of A or AA and rounds out most of the regular season playing section opponents and the occassional non-conference games with new opponents you want to play during the regular season or at Christm...

This is the way I would run a 3 class system. Start with a reputable non-biased (computerized) ranking system at some pre-designated date (I am using today). Take the top 10 regardless of AA or A then the next 14 AA schools. Playoff game #1 versus winner of team #9 and team #24 and so on. So this i...

I also don't think banning opt-ups would solve anything. This is because most, if not all, of the opt-ups would end up in the Class A sections that are strong already (2A, 4A, 7A, 8A). If you think Breck or Mahtomedi against New Ulm sounds bad, wait until the 3A rep gets Hill-Murray or Grand Rapids...

Is there enough schools playing hockey to support this? Baseball has 3 classes but wouldn't seem to make sense in hockey. It ultimately depends on what the goal is. The football coaches were not happy with disparity in size of players and teams and wanted another class. They did that and ended up w...

You have a lot of EP love for sure. Four loses and two ties does not make them #1. That's half their games without a win- A lot of respect for Hill too, talk about weak schedules- I believe STA and HF should move up. 6 out of 17 isn't close to half, although I agree with your comments on EP. They h...

It's hard to think that if I were to come out with another ranking this week it wouldn't be literally the same as last week. I could probably be convinced that I had Totino too high last week, but other than that, there haven't been any upsets or anything to make note for big movers. Some important ...

Re: AA Rankings for 1/22/17

Everything looks good, as usual. Duluth Marshall (10-6-1) -Have won four in a row to build up the record, though none of it came against challenging competition. This week’s Grand Rapids game will give a better sense of where they are compared to the 7AA top tier. The Hilltoppers have me intrigued. ...

I see what you are saying, but they have zero good wins. TRF isn't good this year , so that doesn't work. You can take AA and A out of it, but the teams they've lost to aren't very good, even if they were in A. And one goal losses....are still losses. And they aren't even .500. Can't be in Top with...

Always a fun read, thanks for your efforts. That said, I don't think yiu can have Totino at 8. They lost to weak AA teams in Champlin, Anoka, and Armstrong and barely beat one of the worst AA teams - Coon Rapids 2-1. I think they should be in that 15-16 range. No impressive wins on their resume to ...

Thoughts on St Paul Johnson? They have played a significant portion of their schedule against AA teams, with Minneapolis and South St Paul their top Class A opponents, both in their first 3 games of the season. http://www.mnhockeyhub.com/schedule/team_instance/2102502?subseason=317781 How bout Minne...
