Moorhead and Roseau are both going to be very close this season. Niether team should take the other lightly.
Moorhead sets a new state tournament record!

Moorehead will take this section easy. When the two played this weekend in Moorehead the outcome was not good for roseau.

Roseau vs. Moorhead

Post by Green and White Fan »

There definately is optimism around town about this years version of the Rams. They should be much improved this year and probably better the next two. At this point to say they are the best in the section is speculation and optimistic. I believe they will contend for the 8AA title and I hope I will collecting my pitcher from the local watering hole in Warriortown from Ram1981 as I do believe he bet me the Rams would not go to state in the next 3 years! I don't think the Rams played the Spuds in the Moorhead scrimmages and the scores I got from one of the players had Roseau defeating Blaine 7-1, Eastview 3-1 and losing to Brainerd 3-2.

Bout time you show up, you need to get over here so I can collect all the frosty's from years past. I'm assuming this is the last of the three years were talking about and the start of the three years we've also been talking about. Good to see your monnicker again.

These teams are going to battle throught out the year. Think they will split the season series 1-1 but Moorhead will gain the #1 seed due to a Roseau lose to some other team. Moorhead and Roseau didn't scrimmage againist each other this weekend either, just to clear up some confusion.

That sounds like a very good predition and i think that the Spuds will win in the section finals to go to state again. I think they are just a better team.

I think that if Roseau has any chance at all, look out Spuds. Roseau is a town of hockey, and their team has not been up to par in recent years, so if they have any thoughts at all of winning, it might be a year for the rams.

Roseau just lost to Totino-Grace 4-1. But, I think that Roseau has a great chance of getting to state. They are a big team and I think they will be able to get by their section!

Post by crosscheck »

Slappy, you probably hit it right saying the Rams can't handle the pressure. In order for this edition of the Rams to live up to the community's expectations, they must grow as a team. This group has not experienced being in the fore front for a few years. Normally a good team will flourish taking the role as the front runner. Moorhead is a good examle of that.

The Rams must learn how to play with pressure and not as the under dog. If they can't do this, Moorhead will again be in the State touney come March.

Just about everyone's 6'0" in hockey

Post by Renegade Ram »

For us normal 5'10" ish scandiwhovian's hockey turns us all into sixfooters, the skates are the key. Back in the good old days if you had an actual sixfooter on the roster he was a monster that couldn't dribble. Hockey was the game the short white guys with accents excelled at. Remember Maurice Richard was a whole 5' 8" with a definite mean streak. Now a 6' kid as a 10th grader is no big deal. But then again the soldier that won WWII was 5' 9" tall 145 lbs. carrying a 90 pack into battle. Maybe Darwin isn't wrong or is it the Fluoride they've been putting in the water since the early seventies.

Moorhead and Roseau are going to have some battles this year. Roseau is older a lot more seniors, but dont take Moorhead to lightly just because they lost 14 seniors. I wish they would of played eachother when Roseau went up to moorhead for the scrimmages.
I came back to moorhead for the scrimmages over thanksgiving and moorhead is alot smaller then roseau but moorhead can move the puck a little better.
They both are good skating teams....and both teams have some fast skaters. It is hard to say which team is better at this point.

Roseau 'caves' in like the cliffs in Red Lake Falls

Post by Stitch Lips »

No. 4-ranked Moorhead beat No. 12 Roseau 4-3 in overtime Tuesday on sophomore Nick Thielen’s first varsity goal. More impressively than any play the Spuds initiated, however, was the way they reacted to their first challenge of the season.

Twice Moorhead (3-0) rallied from one-goal deficits and, after giving up the lead late in regulation, rebounded to remain unbeaten in 47 consecutive games at Moorhead Sports Center and extend its win streak against Minnesota Class 2A, Section 8 competition to 32 games.

“This is a good growing point for us,” Spuds coach Dave Morinville said. “It gives us an extra shot of confidence because I think we were coming in with a little bit of, ‘How good are we really?’”

According to Rams coach Scott Oliver, the Spuds will be “as good as they’ve ever been” by the end of the season and by virtue of this victory remain the favorites to claim a sixth consecutive section title.

“We take no consolation in losing tonight. None,” said Oliver, whose team fell to an almost entirely different Spuds team 6-3 in last year’s section final. “The road to St. Paul leads through Moorhead and we’re very well aware of that and we will keep working on our game.”
Nick Thielen
Clearly, Roseau (3-3) has closed the gap.

Despite being outplayed in the opening period, the Rams scored the game’s first goal and went 2-for-3 on the power play, culminating with Corey Erickson’s second tally with 2 minutes, 5 seconds left in regulation.

The Spuds, meanwhile, were physically disruptive and skated with a fervor that wasn’t evident in their first two games, both eight-goal outputs. They had a 27-20 edge in shots on goal and each time Roseau scored to take the lead answered within 3:30. The game winner came midway through the eight-minute overtime when junior defenseman Max Pennder zipped a pass through neutral ice to Thielen, who was all alone behind changingRoseau. The rookie forward chipped the puck top shelf over goalie Alex Bjerk to seal victory and fend off the upstart Rams.

“It felt great,” Thielen said.

“It’s all about confidence,” added Spuds junior forward Jordy Christian, one of two regular forwards back from last year’s state runner-up team. “If we beat them twice they’re going to come in (to the playoffs) thinking, ‘How are we going to beat this team?’”

It’s a question Moorhead will be asking later this week.

The Spuds play at No. 14 Grand Rapids (4-2) on Friday night, a game that will air on Fox Sports Net North, and at No. 7 Duluth East (1-3) on Saturday afternoon, a contest FSN is making a late push to broadcast.

“You’re going to see a lot more of this,” Morinville said of the close outcome.

FIRST PERIOD: 1, R, Weston (McMillin, Biermaier) 9:52. 2, M, Krause (Hedman, Weiss) 13:11.

SECOND PERIOD: 3, R, C.
