Biggest Upset to win State Tourney?
I have not seen this topic on the board yet, so i thought it would be interesting to hear some responses.

Though I am not old enough to recall the good old days of HS hockey in MN, the 2 biggest suprises to win the tourny in my day are the 97 Edina Hornets and the 03 Anoka Tornadoes.

Anyone willing to update me on some un predicted state championships would be great information! and if anyone else believes that there i am wrong or a few more upsets this past decade are welcome!

ER's Choke
Are they really upsets or just chokes?

'00 Blaine

Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

JM
Rochester JM in 1977. They beat our beloved Packers in the semis 1-0 . Goalie stood on his head and stopped shots he never saw. Still pretty bitter about it as you can see.

They then beat Edina in the final.

They had some very good players so it wasnt like it was a total fluke but it was the first and (goldy check me on this?) only time a team south of the metro has won.

Re: JM
I agree with Packerboy, and add John Marshall was only the 4th non Northern team to win the State title which made it even more improbable. Until then only Johnson, Edina, and Southwest had won a title. The balance of hockey power was still up north when it came to winning it all. That JM team put 5 kids (Brandrup, Butters, Lecy, Lecy, and Teal) in D1 hockey, which with all due respect to Petey and his Jefferson teams was quite an accomplishment considering there were quite a bit fewer D1 programs back then.

Red Wing won an A title in 1997

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... oldy313 at: 12/6/05 2:02 pm

Re: Re:moorhead
I agree, last year was a huge upset! Though the '03 Anoka team came out of the unranked.... and took the whole shabang! Man, lots of them over the years... I think this is a great topic.... Though going back to that '77 year has to be right in the ballpark!

-The Slinger

Moorhead
Definitely AHA-Moorhead was a big upset. Moorhead might've won if the ref wouldn;t have screwed up on that high stick call. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:">

Anoka 03 was a pretty big upset also.

Southern state champs
are we only talking AA for south of the metro. how about red wing 97/98 johnny pohls junior year when they went undefeated and he claimed the all time minnesota high school scoring record!

Re: Southern state champs
Who will ever forget Rochester John Marshall in '77, or Edina in '69.

This may not fit most of your definitions as an "upset" but for those who wern't carefully following hockey before the highschool level you might not of know that Centennial even had a team untill they won it all 2 years ago.
The Curse Will End !

Re: Biggest Upset to win State Tourney?
How was last years final an upset, the better team won. You cannot argue that, and do not even bring up Brian Lee because he had a horrible tournament.

In stitches
Well, last year was a mild upset but only some one who was a dye in the wool Spud fan would call it "one of the biggest".

Its not like da Spuds losing in a championship game is a big surprise ....especially to the Catholics.

But I suppose as the years go by it will be reffered to as a "Miracle".

blaine '00
i agree with ERE for Blaine at the time in '00, but the reason i didn't put them down was because of how many D-1 players they had on their team. if you are unaware, Mr. Brandon Bochenski (sp) had a hat trick the other night for the Senators, after a fantastic career for UND, i believe there were about 4 other D-1 players, although not all at major schools.

One reason i said 97 Edina and 03 Anoka too, how many guys off Anoka's team are even playing any college hockey? 4-5?? maybe all at the D-3 level, which is still very respectable.

I see a lot of responses from the 77 JM team, man i wish i coulda seen that game against the ol Pack back in the day!

Upset
Hill-Murray in 91. They finished 3rd in their conference that year. Had the most goals scored on them by a Hill team ever (89). At the time this win was a big suprise.

Re: Upsets?
Nice list Elliot. I was going to mention the Johnson game but I am too old to remember it.

Anyway, when you think about it, has there ever been a really big upset?

All of the upset winners mentioned were really good teams.

Can anybody come up with a team that was .500 or slightly above and found their way to St Paul and then won it... with players that were never heard from again?

It is hard to win 3 in a row even if you are very good (ask da Spud and Packer fans) ....maybe impossible if you are not.
