Hill-Murray's Defensive Core is one of the best, they are:

#2 Bill Leier, #9 Derek McCallum, and #20 Gabe Guentzel are the key players to the Pioneer "D."

I agree with you....All three of hills defense is going to be hard to beat. Leier and Guentzel looked very strong against White Bear...so did McCallum.

I would have to say Apple Valley as well with Fischer and Medvec...However From what i hear Grand Rapids has a very tough "D" as well...I also like Duluth Easts D, they are filling in well after losing Fairchild to ann arbor

Class A I'd say Red Wing has perhaps the best group of 4; with Duluth and Hibbing.

Look for Moorheads junior led defense to get better and better as the season progresses, the top 4 are all over 6 feet tall, and all 4 together must weigh around 700lbs combined, now thats alot of SPUD to back up those new goalies

pucku and hillfanatic,

as a hill supporter i hate to say it but you have to be kidding about leier and guentzel. undersized and very weak. spend much of the game running around in a panic and throwing the puck away hoping to clear the zone. cannot be compared with many of the pioneer defensemen that have come before them.

mccallum is the most talented of the entire d core by far. he is in control when he is on the ice and uses his ability to see plays develop to his advantage. he is not phillippi, tannabe, or godbout but he is the best they have.

I agree with you about the undersized but they are not weak. Billy may not have the best puck handling skills, but he is not afraid to throw his body around or take on a D-1 prospect player (Grun). You need a defenseman or 2 on the team to hit and muscle guys off the puck. (Billy and Derek) In addition, Billy off the ice is the personification of a leader, always pumping-up his team and is there for support. As for Guentzel, he is more of a position, set-up plays, good passing defenseman (sorry I couldn’t describe any better). He may not be the biggest guy out there, BUT he gets the job done! And in the first 4 four games, HM have only given up 1 goal!! That is an accomplishment because of HM's "questionable" goaltending. (the majority has stated earlier) so the D for HM should be praised for this. I am not saying the Billy and Gabe are the best out there, but their team chemistry is what makes them good. They all bring something different to the team. As for McCallum, I agree he is the most talented and the leader of the D.

Nick Carlson of Rosemount is probably the best small defenseman in the State, and one of the best all around defensemen I've ever seen play High School hockey. He's tough, smart, and can really move with and pass the puck.

That Lee kid from Two Harbors seems to be doing good for that team I hear he's in the box alot also.....But also I see on the section 7 webpage he's top scorer for 7a.

Some kids may be solid point producers but in single A (and the Missota) you have to be careful with regards to points as it relates to caliber of competition.

I too, think Mccallum is a nice player....all I'm saying is that Leir and Guentzel have been working hard, and compliment the defense at hill this year. You wont find a better leader on or off the ice than Leir and guentzel has improved too. There is alot more to defense than stickhandling...being physical is a large part of the game too, and Leir was physical the whole game with White Bear. My hat off to them....I think both lines will give any team a run for their money.

ER's Trio of Juniors

Post by NeedsMoreCowbell » Mon Dec 12, 2005 8:22 pm

These guys (slavik, balcom, martell) were damn good as sophmores, helping ER to another state tourney. heads up for them this year, they've got experience and all the nerves out. Especially Captain Hook, he's got speed and can dangle. The hook must be aerodynamically superior to allow for efficient acceleration. o yea, u better be drinkin the Gatorade mix still slav & balcs.

Fischer - Medvec

Post by hockey1964 » Tue Dec 13, 2005 8:57 am

Fischer plays center during the powerplay sometimes. Have never seen Medvec play forward.AV lacks firepower up front and he can move the puck.
