Big win tonight for the boys from C-town, and it makes the top three in 7AA easier to identify, at least as of now; Cloquet, Grand Rapids, Elk River in whatever order you want to put 'em.

East has some work to do but I think they'll be there in late February. At least, I sure hope so

Lee
____________
Message Board arsonist since 2005

I would say Elk River--Top dawg until beaten by a 7AA opponent...maybe next week by GR? Then GR two, knocked of Cloquet earlier, and a very close 3rd, CEC-lost to GR, but seem to be kickin her into high gear after bean schooled by the skippers.

_________________

BOB

Who controlled play in this game? Glad to see a shift in 7AA for a change. I wouldn't count East out yet though. A few years back they started 2-8 or something and ended up going to state.

That was in 2002-03. East stood at 3-8-4 after losing to Grand Rapids in early January, then went 11-2 after that to get to state.

Lee
____________
Message Board arsonist since 2005

Olson PP goal
Syrett
Lundquist

Cloquet over powered East. Doesn't look like East lifted too many weights over the summer. Lots of big hits by Cloquet. Very good game to watch, but obviously just like everyone predicted Cloquet was the better team all around..

Great game at the Lumberdome tonight! Would I have said that if CEC had lost? I can answer that in one word...youbetcha. I looked out over the arena after the zamboni had finished its job and just before the teams came onto the ice for the first period and soaked in the atmosphere. Pretty much all of the 2000+ fans had already filed in and the Cloquet H.S. band was playing. Fans on both sides were screaming their cheers and I could imagine all the people that didn't make it, sitting next to their radios at home listening to the radio call. I thought to myself how neat it is to witness such a great rivalry in such a great sport.
And the Jacks didn't disappoint their fans. The first line came out fast and hard and had a great scoring opportunity immediately. A whistle and a face-off and the second line was out. More of the same. The jacks bottled up the hounds and when the hounds did break the puck out the Jacks turned it and transitioned quickly back into the Duluth end. A penalty by DE and the Jacks were on the power play. The first unit was out and put good pressure on Leis. A faceoff and CEC changed to their second pp unit. More pressure in front of the DE net and a hook by a DE player. 2 man advantage for 1 minute and the Jacks applied the pressure. DE killed off the two man advantage but couldn't quite kill off the remaining pp. A pass from Vichorek to Stevie Mo to Olson who had slid down to the right of the goalie. He caught it, shot, and hit nothing but net and the crowd was on its feet. By the end of the period the Jacks had an 18-5 shot advantage.
In the beginning of the second period the momentum swung back to the hounds. While the Jacks were taking away the middle of the ice the hounds used the boards and put pressure on the jacks. After about the 5 minute mark the jacks were being out shot for the period 6-2. Things settled down and the jacks got back into it and toward the end of the second period the shots were 9-8. With about 17 seconds left in the period there was a faceoff to the right of the DE goalie. Syrett(CEC) was the wing against the boards and as the puck dropped he skated behind the circle and caught a perfect feed from the faceoff. He skated down the slot and buried the puck for a 2 goal lead. The fans were pumped.
I thought the Jacks really controlled the third period. Their hits were hard and often. They won most of the races to the puck and the battles on the board. They got the puck below the goal line and mucked it along the boards. A line change and in comes Syrett to tie up a DE player before he can move the puck. Syrett changes directions and squeezes by the dman. He starts to cut behind the net but instead cuts to the net and slams a shot on goal. He continues to jab at it until the puck pop free to the left of the goaltender and then Lunquist buries it for a 3 goal lead. And that is how it ends.
Sorry Lee about the lack of reporting on the DE play, but after all I am a Lumberjack fan.
Now as for CEC...Players that have really impressed me. #11 Hatch. sophomore forward turned d-man. He is playing well. Makes good decisions and is very good handling the puck. Syrett played hard and does what he's good at. He skates hard takes the body and uses his body to control the puck. Nice job. The first line looked good as did most of the team. The other player that looked good was Reid Ellingson. He looked like he wanted this one tonight and made some nice saves to preserve his shutout. He has been very solid in net this year. Nice job jacks. Enjoy it tonight!
