This one got a bit chippy at the end. The last two minutes took about a half hour to play... At least a dozen penalties, a penalty shot, quite a bit of after the whistle stuff.

I'm usually not too critical of the officials, but this one was poorly officiated... Referee's were making up stuff to call - both ways. Phantom elbows, boarding 20 feet from the boards, tripping when nobody falls down... and since when is pushing called roughing?... Unreal.

It's no wonder there were nearly more players in the boxes at the end of the game than on the benches. Looks like it was the same crew that did the Denfeld & Rapids games, but I'm not 100% sure.

Anyway, Virginia pretty much dominated this one from the drop of the puck. Forest Lake must have been off for them to only come away with a tie against this Park team earlier this week.

Whatthepuck I like Virginia. They have a very good team and have a bunch of great kids. All I am saying is that I wish they would play a little tougher scedule. It would help them down the strech. Play Breck or Warroad or Morehead you know what I am talking about.

PuckRanger:

You must be a Virginia fan because you are at all of their games. Are there any referees that you do not criticize? Those guys have a unthankful job. Do you ever notice why there are not many young people refereeing, not only in hockey but all of the other sports? Who wants to waste their time putting up with uninformed fans and some coaches as well as some ill-mannered disrespectful kids? Maybe they should get rid of all the sports and let them be club teams. That way our schools could concentrate more dollars on the teachers, classrooms, and training, instead of wasting the money on sports. Let the parents foot the bills for these undisciplined people and maybe our property taxes that support these schools wouldn't be so high.

Thanks for listening.

I agree with Zorba.....keep up the good work. PuckRanger is responsible for some of the most objective game summaries on this board. He doesn't gloat when VMIB wins, and he doesn't whine when they lose. Also, if officiating is a factor, he should comment on it. It's part of the game.

TheGame74,
Yes, I do attend a lot of Virginia games, along with Eveleth and Hibbing games, and I am a fan of all hockey teams in northern Minnesota. I've been to more of Virginia's games mainly because they've played more home games than Hibbing, and Eveleth has been playing at the same time as Virginia when they are at home, and I just prefer watching a state ranked team.

If your lumping me in with "uninformed fans", you would be sorely mistaking. I've been watching high school teams up in this part of the state for 16+ years. I play a large part in the section7hockey.com website and 95% of the information on that site I put there myself! If its on that site, I've read it, I've written it, or I've researched it. I'd also like to point out that I don't have kids in any of these programs and never have. I've never played for any of them either.

This statement really irrates me: <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:">
"Are there any referees that you do not criticize?"

Are you kidding? I challenge you to find another post on this board where I criticized the officials! As a matter of fact, you will find I have defended them in the past! As I stated in my last post, I am not one to normally criticize officials. However, in this case I thought the officiating in that game rivaled that of a peewee or bantam game. Nothing can change my mind about that. I know these guys aren't professionals, but they are paid for their services. There were just too many obvious mistakes in this one.

Also, how you brought this around to property taxes is probably the most absurd thing I've ever heard!

ref evaluator

Post by thunderdan » Mon Dec 19, 2005 12:20 am

tell ya what, watching 16 years of hockey at any level doesnt make you a good evaluator of officials, unless all that research you were doing has something to do with a rules book along with some heavy on-ice experience calling it yourself.
so why is pushing called roughing?? Are you kidding me??
Do you even know what roughing is or how to call it?? Probably not from how I read your post.
They call it that probably because roughing is a more politically correct word to use instead of pushing after the whistle or when you shove a guys face into the boards. Are you saying players should be ok with pushing (in any way) after the whistle trying to taunt each other into a fight?? I would say those are good calls since they initially prevent bad situations further down the line when calling a game. Last thing you need as an official is for a game to get out of hand and players getting hurt because of it.

Refs

Yeah i'd tend to agree that Mr. Iron Range has no idea about the rules of hockey... or how to officiate a game, a good ref makes some phantom calls to keep the game under control sometimes! Sounds like that was the case here if it got "chippy" It isn't as easy as it looks

thunderdan, I by no means call myself an expert at evaluating referees. I have no desire to be a full-time ref critic. Pushing after the whistle is one thing, but I was referring to pushing DURING THE PLAY! If you can't push a guy, how the heck are you gonna check a guy? I know what roughing is, and that ain't it!

I have actually read the rule book in years past, and I read the changes imlemented to the rule book each year as they are posted on the MSHSL website. I'm pretty aware of the rules and the desired interpretation of them. This game did get out of hand, if ya ask me. There was a punch thrown and it went UNCALLED! Which further emphasizes the point of my original post.

P Ranger,

I understand what your saying now. Pushing is fine as long as a guy doesnt push some other's face into the boards or have his hands up high when he pushes or shoves which could possibly result in punches to the face sometimes.
I wasnt at that game where it got chippy in the 3rd period. But at least the refs tried to keep the game under control by calling something wether they were right on the calls or not.
safety is more important than a win or loss in my book.

roughing

Post by VABlueDevilsfan » Mon Dec 19, 2005 8:40 pm

the goaltender definately deserved the roughing penalty. don't ya think oldtime80?
seems like after the last time out Park came out looking for trouble..........what was said on the bench?
Virginia had to do something but that really isn't their style. Hopefully, we wouldn't see that style of play again this season.
