Edina Classic
Eden Prairie looked very solid in their win against Elk River just like they did against Apple Valley.

The Elks came out flying in the third period, but it wasn't enough to get the job done.

Any update on the Edina vs. Grand Rapids game?

Yes or No
Does this mean GR & ER get to play?

Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

Re: Yes or No
Empire, the games are pre-scheduled, all four teams play each other through the course of three days. ER and GR play on Friday at 6:00 pm.

I got to Braemar during the 2nd period of the EP-ER game, it was tied 2-2. It looked like EP was a step faster in the 2nd period as they went up 4-2, but the Elks worked hard to try to come back in the 3rd. ER's Kyle Kurr scored on a nice shorthanded wraparound that was all effort on his part to bring the Elks to 4-3. There were a lot of penalties, particularly against ER and they had to play the last two minutes shorthanded which led to EP's final empty net goal. This seems like a more skilled, skating Elks team than the past few years. EP has a lot of seniors, but also some real young players, including 9th grader Danny Kristo who has some size and skill and saw a lot of ice time.

Just so you know my bias, if there's anything more fun than cheering on a northern team against Edina at Braemer tell me about it. GR looked great in their throwback uniforms, it was like stepping back in time for me as I'm old enough to have seen them play in those uniforms originally.

Edina got a quick jump on GR to start the game, but GR quickly caught up and both teams had some good chances in the first period but couldn't capitalize. Shots were 8-7 Edina. GR scored in the second period when Patrick White skated the puck into the zone, left it for Joe Stejskal at the point who fired a high shot that Jared Smith tipped on a screen that the Edina goalie had no chance to stop.

Edina's Tom Jorgensen tied it up on a power play goal 45 seconds into the third when the puck came loose in the right slot area and GR's Jensen couldn't get across to make the save, Joe Gleason got credit for an assist. T.J. Ridley put Edina ahead on another unassisted power play goal from almost the same spot about 8 minutes into the third. GR got a couple of power plays but were really sloppy and couldn't get anything going. Finally, Patrick White took the puck around the net and tried a wraparound that was stopped, but the rebound got knocked in. White got credit for the goal with Zach Wohlers getting the assist.

The overtime was pretty even until a GR player got called for cross checking after nailing an Edina player from behind with about two minutes left in OT. With about 30 seconds to go, a GR player skated past the puck while trying to carry it out of his zone and Edina jumped on it and swarmed the net, with Matt Leer getting credit for the winning goal.

GR's Patrick White was a force, he was probably the best player on the ice. Goalie Reidar Jensen made some outstanding saves and looked solid. He's good at handling the puck but needs to make sure he doesn't get lackadaisical as at one point he almost let a routine shot skip over his stick and into the net. This was probably the best GR team I've seen in awhile, but they need to work on their special teams as all of Edina's goals were on the power play and their power play looked really sloppy particularly moving the puck up the ice. Edina was probably a bit quicker, no.10 Matt Reber was a thorn in GR's side the whole game.

Re: Yes or No
I'm glad Rapids is atleast keeping these games close, but they need to pull a couple of them out. To me the main thing is they have solid goaltending, and they have more offense this season than in years past. I look forward to the section playoffs just knowing we have a great chance this year.

Re: Close but no cigar
They could easily have won last night and probably should have if their special teams had been up to snuff. It seems like this should be an easy thing to fix as it should just take some work in practice, but it will be a test for the team and the coaching staff to see if the special teams play does improve. The goalie is excellent and plays with the confidence that you like to see in a goalie.

I'd expect them to lose tonight like 4-1, as Eden Prairie is probably a better team than Edina, and they'll likely be a bit flat after last night's loss. The Elk River game should be a good battle, I don't see either team winning by more than a goal, so I'll guess GR 3-2 in OT.

I really like the throwback uniforms. I assume they're still wearing the 'GR' white uniforms?

Re: Close but no cigar
Yes, they still have the "GR" logo white uniforms, with black on the shoulders. I think next year they're going to get new white uniforms, but the "GR" logo will stay, or I will cut some throats.

6:00 and 8:00

I'd like to see Rapids go to the 1990-91 uniforms, home and away next season.

Rapidly on the decline?
GR could get swept out of the cities and finding themselves going home 4-6 and on a 4 game losing streak heading into the Hibbing tournament.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... sskycam at: 12/22/05 2:52 pm

Re: GR vs. EP
well, that's what some dude at braemar arena told me. Even though Rapids is improved this year, one goal loses to top ranked teams has been a recurring theme for years. Even years Rapids was a 5 or 6 seed in 7AA. Tomorrow a win vs. Elk River would be a better than a split to me, how so? It's a 7AA game. Huge for pairings.

ELks vs Edina Score
Anybody have the Mighty Elks vs. Edina score from last night?
