Re: Had To
I wonder if the fact that the game didn't count on their "official record" made that much of a difference once the teams hit the ice tonight.

Lee
____________
Message Board arsonist since 2005

Re: Had To
I think it would have to, Warroad basically has to change their game completely, especially on the forcheck. You just can't play with normal intensity with the rules being as they were.

Geez if I weren't banned from the USCHO board I'd really go after some of the people who thought Warroad stood no chance in this one.

Re: Had To
I went to warroad's schedule, and unless i counted wrong, there were 25 games INCLUDING this game on their schedule, isn't 25 the normal season? did they add a game somewhere?

Re: Had To
All I can say is take their threats very seriously, and I think the whole board is run by the NOW crowd.

Yes it did count
And a win is a win. Couldn't have ended any better. With full contact this isn't even close; even as it was the bigger Warrior players were able to skate through the USA sticks. With the shinny rules applied the girls were able to keep it close good skaters not definitely faster like the trib quote.

Re: Had To
on the MSHSL site there are 28 games listed, TRF is listed twice both times leaving 26 games counting tonights.

Re: Re-cap
It meets the MSHSL's definition of a game because

1-they wore game uniforms
2-they kept score
3-they advertised the game
4-paid officials were used.

Remember a couple years ago when a bunch of baseball and softball teams had to forfeit games because they played in what they thought were scrimmages in florida or other southern states, only to learn that the league defined these as a game. The league clearly spells out the rules on what is and isn't a game. This one counts.

Counts?
SS -
I have no idea if it's gonna count, I've just been pasting the Strib's stories, and they obviously think it does.
I agree with you 100%, it's absurd in many ways.
The whole "it's a real game, but we just can't check" thing kills me.
Since when can "convenient" little changes be made to a great game with rules and regulations?
What's next? Half the teams at the X decide to play "boot hockey" this spring once they see the competition?
It looks like Warroad did an awesome job of hosting a good event, don't get me wrong. They always do. It is a great atmosphere and anyone who ever laced on a skate should take it in once. The U.S. teams obviously realize what the town has meant to the program, and this turned out a real win-win. The boys did themselves proud, by handling it with class, changing their game, and still getting it done. They handled it very well, like Warroad teams usually do.

"We didn't know if it would be them 10-0 or us 10-0, but we're hearing they're really good."
Indeed, the U.S. women beat the Canadian women's Olympic team 5-3 on Sunday. Their roster is dotted with household names in Minnesota women's hockey, including Natalie Darwitz, Krissy Wendell and Jenny Potter.
"We may have bitten off more than we can chew," Fermoyle said.
So why take the bite at all? The game will not count on Warroad's record, which is why Fermoyle says it isn't inherently important. But the Olympic women were going to be practicing at the Warroad arena anyway, and when Warroad athletic director Craig Oftedahl asked his coaches last year if they wanted to play the game, they said yes.
"It's an honor to be asked," Fermoyle said. "I've always been told there's no greater honor than to be asked to play for your country. It's hard to say no because you're afraid of being beaten and looking bad."
Both teams are anticipating a tough game.
"I think they're going to be a good team," said Potter, who played high school hockey at Edina before leading the nation in scoring for the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 1999-2000. "They're going to be fast. They're going to make you think."
The respect is mutual.
"They have a different style, they do a lot of nice things and they stick handle well," Warriors junior Aaron Marvin said. "They're all very good players, and they're fast. It will be fun to match up against their skills."
Fermoyle said another coach told him the slowest skater on the Olympic team is faster than the fastest skater on his team. But in reality, no one knows for sure until the two teams take the ice.
The game will be played under Minnesota State High School League rules, except there will be no checking. While taking away a physical part of the game could be a disadvantage for the boys, Warroad is downplaying its significance.
"It won't be a big deal," said Marvin, who said everyone on the team has played no-check hockey in summer camp. "We're all used to it. We've all grown up playing it. It will be outdoor-rink hockey, just on a little higher level."
"If there was hitting, it could be worse," Fermoyle said. "I understand a couple of those women are really strong. They're good athletes. It could be embarrassing for a kid to get drilled by a girl. We may overdo the avoidance of playing the body, and end up looking like a fool that way, whereas they're playing it the way they know it can be played.
"I don't mean to sound whiny here. I think there are a lot of people who are not giving that team enough respect. Girls hockey has really come a long way in the last few years. We have a hockey school, and we've seen the difference from 10 years ago and today. We know they're going to be good."
Who's faster? Who's more physical? Questions like that have contributed to the hype surrounding the exhibition game.
"Warroad is Hockeytown USA, so it's going to be crazy," Darwitz said. "I have a buddy that lives up there and every time I go it's so welcoming. Everybody talks about hockey. In 2002, we played up there against the University of Minnesota and it was a packed house. We signed every autograph. It was awesome."
This time the crowd has its own horse in the race, so the atmosphere should be even greater. And while neither team wants to lose, the competition is more imporant than the outcome.

Compliments of the Grand Forks Herald

Slappy the GF herald is wrong
This Ricky chap made a boo-boo he made the mistake a good reporter shouldn't he didn't check his facts from more than one source, it did and does count. To be played it had to be sanctioned by the HS league. nuff said about that. Boy, I hope Scotty was misquoted in the trib cuz that wasn't the case at all. Its Over!!
Great, the boys won! I'm glad this game is over, now we can get back to "real" hockey.

I wish the USA team the best in the Olympics, but they have no fan of girls hockey in me as the High School State tourney will obviously have better hockey than the entire womens Olympic competition.

Re: Its Over!!
It would be nice if no one showed up for the girls tourney after all the BS about playing at the Xcel because it's not fair. They end up at the X due to availability, will kill their atmoshpere, but they get what they ask for.

So which of Warroads 26 games counts as a forfiet then?

Nice that in the whole Strib story not one thing about the game itself is mentioned, just a bunch of crap about how it's a feel good story for both sides.
