Kronick not out East

Post by tiger1 » Mon Mar 11, 2002 7:49 am

Kronick did not play on the East coast swing. After seeing the Tourney AHA would not even be close to the same caliber of team without him. I know that BCM was missing 2 of thier top D when they met but I doubt that either one of those guys impacted that team as much as Kronick impacted AHA ( I may be wrong though).

Will AHA be playing the East coast teams next year? I hope so. They need to redeem MN hockey in the eyes of the East coast.

prep

Post by MassMan » Mon Mar 11, 2002 11:32 am

Just for clarification...in hockey terms Mount Saint Charles and Catholic Memorial are not considered “Prep” schools. Neither plays in the prep school leagues. Both play private and public high schools in their respective states. And both have lost and will continue to lose players to eastern prep schools.
To give you an idea of the talent difference between prep school and high school hockey, Mount Saint Charles lost to Belmont Hill 6-2 this year in a scrimmage. Belmont Hill is not even in the top 10 of eastern prep schools.

hey Massman I have a question!

Post by tiger1 » Mon Mar 11, 2002 2:01 pm

Does Belmont Hill play Shattuck St. Marys from Minnesota? I would be curious how the Prep schools fair against SSM.

connect the dots

Post by MassMan » Tue Mar 12, 2002 11:54 am

Shattuck seems to play mostly midget and Jr programs. Unfortunately, they don’t cross paths with many eastern prep or high school programs. Here is the connect-the-dots I play to determine relative strength.

Shattuck played the following three prep/HS programs
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Culver Academy: beat them handily each time (11-4, 6-0, 3-2, 5-0)
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp New Trier (IL): tied 2-2
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Gilmore Academy: tied 2-2

Culver took an eastern road swing and played the following eastern prep schools...
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Philips Exeter:&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Won 6-4
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Lawrence Academy&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Won 4-3 OT
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Cushing Academy:&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Lost 5-0
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Belmont Hill:&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Lost 3-2

Based on this I would say that Culver is on par with the middle-of-the-pack eastern preps, but a step behind the top programs (Cushing).

Gilmore played one Eastern prep...Cushing and lost 3-1

Gilmore played New Trier and tied 3-3

Based on the above I would say that Shattuck is probably on par with the top New England Prep programs.

Kronick

Post by petey1321 » Wed Mar 13, 2002 11:54 pm

As mentioned earlier, I'd wager that if you threw Kronick on that team that went out to New England, you'd have yourself a good old fashioned whipping delivered by the Stars. 4 goals vs. Roseville? 4? That's nuts. To miss that is huge. AHA also tied Cloquet after losing him, a team they thoroughly spanked in the tourney with him, so don't discount his influence in missing those games.

Not a rip

Post by petey1321 » Thu Mar 14, 2002 12:16 am

I hope that my comments were not construed as a rip on AHA, as they are often accused of being. I think you as a Stars fan can agree that having Kronick probably would have made the difference for your guys out in New England. I was definitely impressed by him and the team as a whole at the state tourney, and I have no doubt that if those teams came to Minnesota now to play AHA, they'd be going home quite unhappy.

Would that mean that the games still "..mean nothing.." as you asserted in your earlier posts? Or if the Stars win in New England with Kronik, do the games suddenly mean something?

MN -vs- Nation

The AHA team with Kronick was a much better squad then the AHA team without him. That being said, based on what I saw in the tourney, the next couple of years should be very fruitful for this team. The young defensive group was awesome. I really hope that they make the East Coast matchup an annual event. AHA would be an excellent represenattion of the top level MN AA teams over the next 3 or 4 years. And I would hope that the East Coast teams can find it in thier budgets to make the trek to the Twin Cities. It would great to see Catholic Memorial play Jefferson & AHA back to back or bring Duluth East down for a shot at CM, they are always looking for the best game. I understand MSC does not have the financial wherewithall to make the trip so maybe BC high could do it instead. These are the two premiere HS hockey areas and should do battle every year.

Exhibition games

Post by petey1321 » Thu Mar 14, 2002 3:20 pm

To the best of my knowledge, exhibition games do mean nothing, except when people and newspapers blow them completely out of proportion. Kind of like blowing a comment taken out of context from 3 and a half months ago out of proportion.

Petey, exhibition games may mean nothing to you. I witnessed both AHA games in the EAST. Those games meant a lot to all three teams.

Blowing it out of proportion? You're the one that said AHA was not even a good team representing Minnesota and that is the reason ithe games meant nothing.

And as far as Kronick, it is too bad he missed the game. So we will never know and we will only be able to guess the outcome.

But maybe you know for certain what the outcome would have been. Just as you were certan that AHA was not that good of a team. And, no, you said the team was no good, not that team was no good without Kronick.

704set

I really have to wonder about you. You have absolutely nothing to say about anything until the topic of New England comes up, and all of a sudden you're there with commentary. You must just check the board for comments about the northeast and weigh in when you deem it necessary to berate me. Strange.

Anyway, if you paid attention to any of the other posts on here, you'd know that Kronick's injury was supposed to be season ending. I had no reason to mention it when I talked about the team, because as far as any of us on here were told, he wasn't on the team anymore for all intents and purposes. The guy absolutely took over the game against one of the best teams in the state (Roseville), and I'm sorry if it hurts you to hear it, but him being there would have been a difference maker in those games out there.

And by the way, those games might have meant a lot to those two northeastern teams who think they are now just as good as all the teams in Minnesota, but I can assure you that Holy Angels would much rather have their state title than have won those games. They didn't mean a lot to Holy Angels, they meant a fun trip. Those medals they have now mean a lot.

704, Who's the kid that played net for C.M. this year? I don't know if there is a goalie in the state of MN as good as him. As for the rest of the guys that played on the C.M. team, average. Most MN teams would beat them on a consistent basis.

mnmoon asked "Who's the kid that played net for C.M. this year? I don't know if there is a goalie in the state of MN as good as him. As for the rest of the guys that played on the C.M. team, average. He's still got a little way to be considered one of the greats, but former Mount players like Garth Snow will continue to work with him.

This year is a down year for a very young MSC and their players really are just average. They only have four seniors that play regularly and their leading scorer only has 47 points, whereas they usually have 1 or 2 players scoring high 60's to low 70's assists and goals. It looks like none of their seniors will be playing D-1 in college vice the normal 3 to 4 players per year moving on to that level. It's doubtful anyone now on the team has the potential to join the seven former Mount players now playing in the NHL.

Just like so many of MN's regular powerhouses, teams here in the east can and do have down cycles.

Just the same, for those that said AHA's eastern swing were just "meaningless" games I can tell you that, having watched the AHA/MSC game, both teams played their hearts out the whole game long. It was too bad somebody had to lose, we (players and fans) all gained by the experience methinks.

Congratulations to the Stars, they seemed like a class act out here and it seems they did what they had to do to get crowned champions of what is still considered to be the top of the heap in HS hockey.

Oh yeah, thanks to Videoscout for his classy post (3/15/02 12:42:39 am). Moon, the goalie for CM is Ed Nehilley, a Junior from Holbrook, Mass.

Petey, I only post when I have something to say. You are in denial.

You are in denial that AHA lost against two teams in the East. You have posted it meant nothing. Of course, any team would rather win their state championship tha any single game. Both Mount and CM defend their respective state titles this weekend. It means a lot more than the victories over AHA.

You were in denial when you posted that AHA was an average team and CM and Mount would get their butts kicked if they played the better teams. Well, the unthinkable happened. AHA is the best in MN!! Now you are pulling the Kronick card.

You are in denial that MN doesn't produce the best hockey players in the country. I hear MN has depth. Maybe so, but what kid who laced up a pair of skates for the first time never had visions of playing in the pros. Mount has 7 players on the NHL ice this year. That's from one school! Seven players on the Olympic team came from Mass.

And AHA hasn't even seen the best from EAST. Both CM and Mount got spankings from prep schools this year.

Videoscout, I agree with you. Give credit where credit is due.

704set
