Ch 4 vs Ch 9

Post by chester91 » Thu Jan 09, 2003 6:47 pm

How much longer is the contract with Ch. 9 coverng the
Hockey Tournament? The tournament was put on a pedastal when Ch. 4 WCCO covered the tournament. Watching Ch 9 coverage is like watching the local cable guys cover the tournament, these guys are hacks. I miss the coverage that Mark Rosen and R.J. Fritz gave the tournament. It was fun learing about the individuals players and schools rather then the Athletic Directors that Ch 9 keeps interviewing during intermission. Hopefully one of the big three jump back into covering this great tournament again.

WCCO did such a classic job televising the tournament. The in-school videos were a little cheesy, but fun when I was in High School. The pre-tournament special they always did, the half hour state final preview they did. They went the whole nine yards. Biggest problem now is any channel will have to show both A and AA so you can't go back to showing all the games which sucks. Although now that I finally got my tickets, I care less about tv. I believe channel 9 just renewed their contract in the last year or two, so I don't think it will be heading to another channel for a long time. Besides, they do all the other sports too. I can't remember, did channel 9 have the prep bowl even when WCCO was doing the hockey tourney?

Ch4 vs Ch9

Post by chester91 » Thu Jan 09, 2003 8:52 pm

They have covered the Prep Bowl since it moved into the Metrodome in '82. My problem with Ch 9 is the fact that they put the same effort into the hockey tournament that they put into the girls basketball. Lets be honest, we are not the best state in the county in girls basketball, we are the best state in the country in high school hockey. We need to showcase this again. Ch.4 made non hockey fans of the state tournament. Look at the size of the crowds at section finals, the hype that coverage through print media and television made section finals a big deal. You remeber the days at the Met Center for a Sec 1 and Sec 3 final? The attendence was 15,000 for a sectional final, now it's played at the Coliseum in front of 4,000 fans. They need to get people excited about Minnesota High School hockey!

Does this Ch. 4 broadcast to outstate cities? I know I could get the tourny on Ch. 9. I personally don't have cable so I'm not sure. I'm sure the spuds will be at the tourny (yeah right. not the way their playing now) so I'll be down south this year.

<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o">

Channel 4

Channel 4 was locally owned when they had the hockey tournament. CBS owns them now, and I doubt they'd drop four nights of their own primetime programming for high school hockey.

There may be hope for Channel 9, though. Since they are now a FOX affiliate, maybe they'll use Fox Sports Net cameramen and producers. Still need to upgrade the announcers, though.

If you need rabbit ears to get Ch 4 outstate then there are a lot of referees that will be happy if it goes back to Ch 4, they will be able to get reception in pipestone.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

Seriously, Wally Shaver should stick to writing about hockey. His phony Canadian accent is stoopid, eh? The guys on Ch 4 are great.

Channel 9 coverage is pathetic. Their cameramen couldn't follow the play of a peewee game. They constantly lose the action around the puck. Their between periods "coverage" is bush league. It's obvious that they put no effort into the coverage beyond the presentation of the games. Also, why don't they broadcast the third place game and/or consolation championship? Those games are often the most entertaining games of the tournament. Videoscout, ever think of applying as a camerman for Channel 9?

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub33.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUser ... reenway at: 1/10/03 10:54:15 am

I would want total creative control and wouldn't take orders from any producer sitting in a studio if I shot the tournament. Albeit ... I would have a remote control net-cam behind the goaltenders, your typical sight-line cameras @ club level ... end cameras ... press box cameras ... cameras in both the players/cheerleaders lockerrooms <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> .... and cameras in the players box.

Then ... and only then ... would I consider it. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o">

Here's the kicker .... Probably won't be able to make the Moorhead/Greenway (not Coleraine) game on February 1. It's tough to make the trip back home from the Cities on a weekend. A couple of hours of talk about high school hockey over a couple of bumps at Mike's in Bovey would be a good time.

CCO coverage was premiere

Post by AngusYoung » Fri Jan 10, 2003 1:01 pm

There is no question that WCCO's coverage of the tourney was exeptional and KMSP's cannot hold a candle to it. One of the coolest touches CCO added was the videos that each entrant school was allowed to produce to play during their first game in between periods. Those were excellent and the kids had a blast shooting them. Also, I remember a few of the last years they had the coverage, Chris Cuthbert was the lead announcer for them and did the Championship game. For anyone who does not know him, he is one of the leading play callers for Canada's premier sports show - Hockey Night in Canada. Over all, a much more professional and polished delivery of coverage than what we see lately. I'm sure it has to do with the amount of $$ available and CCO's budget was probably twice what KMSP's is, but I think with a little imagination and a few more $$'s, KMSP could improve their coverage dramatically. I will add that I am grateful for the fact that we have ANY coverage of the premiere high school event in the country and I hope it continues no matter who produces it.

Angus, I hate to disagree with you but I thought the worst part of the WCCO coverage was the videos. I'm sure it was a blast for the players to put together, but for the last 3 or 4 years every team used the same 2 songs; "The Boys are Back in Town" or "Thunderstruck". <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /tired.gif ALT="|I">

I personally think Anthony Lapanta did a very good job announcing last year, Shaver is OK. I'd like to see some different color people though. When Louie was still working in the game, he did a good job. But now it seems he comes back to MN once a winter to do the games and doesn't know the players anymore. Doug Johnson is just a little bland.

I would like to see a few 1-2 minute player profiles before games and between periods and a little more in-depth analysis on the teams. The cookie cutter format of "Here's two teams, here is their record, here is their top scorer, here is their goalie, here is their coach" format is pretty boring.

They also had a :30 minute pre-game show for the Championship. Growing up everybody wanted to play in the glass arena and be on CH 4!

I was young(7-8 years old) when WCCO brodcasted the games. And the one thing that I do remember from the brodcasts is the videos. Warroads seemed to always bee filmed in our high school and all I could remember was "gosh i can't wait till I can go to that school" haha, but from what i hear on this thread, their coverage was outstanding. I like the idea of the 30 minute pregame show for the championship or whatnot.

Ch 4 vs Ch 9

Post by chester91 » Sat Jan 11, 2003 9:57 am

Hey Warrior Fan, Warroad was the team back then. You would have a sold out Civic Center standing and doing the Warroad chant. Ask videoscout guy for the '88 Edina vs Warroad semi-final game. Outstanding! You had I believe one of the greatest High School players in Larry Olimb. Larry would play 90 percent of the game, he almost beat Edina by himself. Edina went on to beat Warroad in double overtime 2-1. Hey, when is Warroad going to step up and play double a? People use to love Warroad, they were everybody favorite team. If Roseau can step up Warroad can do it. I still believe if Warroad wins state in '88 we would stll be playing a great 8 tournament.

Yes Larry Olimb was a great player, i was too young to realize which one he was out on the ice at the time, but from the old state tournament tapes i've seen him play he was fun to watch. You also have to give credit to the goalie at the time to Chad Erickson, he was unbelivable also. Videoscout, how much for a tape of that semi final game? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> I can't speak for the school or anything but possibly one of the reasons that warroad doesn't jump to AA is because of the financial aspect of it. Warroad is not a rich school by any means. i've been done with school for 2 years at the end of this year, and they've had to have the voters vote for a refferendum since my junior year. Every year we have to keep cutting teachers because we simply don't have the students coming in to bring funds in. oh and chester, its the "warrior beat" just a lil FYI hehehe

Keep in mind, I too was cheering for Warroad, but the game-tying goal in that Edina game was offsides by 6 feet. An Edina defenseman throws the puck out of the zone and it hits a Warroad guy and pops back in, and Warroad never cleared the zone. Warroad got a mini two on one and scored their only goal. Anyway, still a classic game, although why Edina manages to win everytime in OT is beyond me. I still have it on tape, although pretty bad quality nowadays. The Civic center went nuts when Warroad scored though, I remember that...

Angus, I agree with you completely, at least as far as the game coverage went. WCCO's production of the Tournament was first class. I remember Chris Cuthbert well, and I believe WCCO actually used some other production staff from Hockey Night in Canada, during the years they had the Tourney.

As Reggie stated, I too like Anthony LaPlanta behind the mike. He is well informed and does a nice play-by-play job. I'm not a Wally Shaver fan myself.

Perhaps the Fox Sports Net affiliation can help, but if nothing else look at how other hockey games specifically or how sports in general are presented by those who are good at it, and get some fresh ideas and approaches. Right now, KMSP is at the cable access level.

Been listening to him doing the local cable broadcasts of the section 3 games for years. Although for some reason, Directv in Blaine doesn't get those anymore. He always did a good job on games he couldn't have been paid more then $50 to announce. Now the guys he was stuck with were another thing altogether...
