Not Bobby Orr....duh.......but still number four..by SS..

Post by slapshooter » Wed Jan 08, 2003 3:41 am

Say Angus. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">

Never said I was Bobby Orr but still I wore the number four. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/grin.gif ALT=" >D"> Let's compare the photos. In Bobbys, you have him flying through the air ( falling really) as he scored his first, or was it his second of the game? ( or was it a hat trick?) in any case, the game winner, and the photo was shot from the end of the rink that he scored on, probably from behind the net. It also won him and his mates a Stanley Cup. Not bad.. Mine ( <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> ), on the other hand, was legendary, (in my <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> wn mind) as I was shown leaping in ecstasy with three drunks in the background, who always stood by the players entrance, (shot from the side, parallell to the net), when they weren't out digging graves, with five players sprawled on the ice including the goalie, who, along with the others, had been faked right out of his cup holder, and it was clear that I ( <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> ) would be landing on my feet as usual scoring my fifth of the game. It wasn't the game winner, as I had already got that with the first blast of the evening, being that we won that one sixteen to nothin'. Those drunks went nuts let me tell ya! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin"> I was awarded a cup also for that goal by the plumbers grandma. A nice 'CUP' of hot chocolate. That I <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> , incidentally, did not share with the team. I also got kissed by all the cheerleaders after the game, as was usually the case. I don't think Bobby Orr got kissed by any cheerleaders in the photo you refer to did he? In fact I'm almost positive that I got kissed by way more cheerleaders, and their friends than Orr ever possibly could have. So their was some similarities but my photo was just a little better.

L<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /alien.gif ALT="0]"> E, SL<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> PSH<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> TER,

(...a legend in his <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> wn mind...)

What a vivid memory

Post by AngusYoung » Wed Jan 08, 2003 9:17 am

The Pirates have not been the same since you left the hallowed halls of CHS. I'm sure it happened just the way you described it with no embellishment - the only detail you left out was that back then every cheerleader was a 10.

Well Angus, <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/sick.gif ALT=":x">

Yes it is true that the halls of CHS will never be the same since my departure. In fact the halls of CHS will never be. They demolished the place many moons ago. If you focus your memory on that hallowed photo, you may remember that the uniform I adorned was Blue and White although the picture was developed in black and white. If you looked close enough you may have also noticed my lipstick stained cheeks being that there were no glass barriers between us and the fans in those days. While it is true that I skated as a Pirate for a couple of seasons it was not in high school although the CHS Pirates probably wished it had been, especially when they were defeated in overtime in one of the most exciting rivalry games ever to be played on that rink, as a result of two blue line bullets that I fired to their demise. One between the legs of their near-sighted goalie to tie it up with a minute twenty seven to go, and the other to lay that same netminder down as he did the splits to make the save as my comrad slammed in the rebound for the overtime winner giving me an assist on the game winner. That time, the lipstick stains on my face <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> from the tying goal got smudged all over the place by my hysterical team-mates. Now lets see if you can figure out which CHS I am talking about. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /devil.gif ALT=":evil"> You got the year (1971) right, although the photo was shot in a game played in 1970. And yes, the cheerleaders were all tens but their friends were elevens <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p">

L<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /alien.gif ALT="0]"> E, SL<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> PSH<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> TER.

(...a legend in his <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> wn mind...)

History and memories, over technology

Post by DaJacks » Thu Jan 09, 2003 12:28 am

I'm not gonna lie, i've had the opportunity to play in gardens and it was beautiful, possibly the nicest i've played in. I've seen pics of hte new Ralph, look amazing. But lets face it, this is high school hockey. We dont need all that glitz and glamour to make an enviornment ranking up there with the X when dallas comes to town. Hibbing memorial i believe it the perfect venue for high school hockey, it's big enough to host the section finals in one of the most competetives sections in the state, yet not glamourous enough to remind us all what level there playing at, and the memories that have happened there are countless. although those top notch venues are awesome to play in, but as a fan, i'm more into the atmosphere. hibbing does get beat by many in that category

Well let's see Shapshooter, being that Crookston was (and still is to a lesser degree) a bastion of Catholicism in the 60's and 70's, there are many parochial schools to choose from. We've determined it wasn't the old Central High School, could it be St. Joseph's Academy? Not unless you were chic and they played girls hockey back then. How about Mt. St. Benedict? Same story as SJA. Maybe you were from a farm family and attended NW School of Agriculture - nope, no hockey program. I guess that leaves only CATHEDRAL High School, home of the Blue Wave. A cocky bunch from back in that era of the 60's, 70's especially with your victory(I think) over the then defending champ Thief River Falls club. Sully must have had you guys stoked for that battle! Who had the better looking girls - Cathedral, SJA, or MSB and who had the less pristine girls(we all know Catholic girls are the wildest). Also, tell me who graduated from CHS and went on to be the captain @ Harvard in 63-64. As for this thread, I've said it before and I'll say it again, NOTHING compares to the Memorial Arena in HIbbing. If you don't believe it, attend the next 7AA final they host - there is nothing like it!

To JUNIORHOCKEY about Duluth East

Post by findthetwine » Thu Jan 09, 2003 5:29 pm

what you said about east having a better locker room and facility then UMD is completely wrong. THe facilities are exactly the same for all three highschools Central East and Denfeld. Ive been in all three and there is absolutly no difference and to whatever youve heard east doesnt even get that much publicity for hockey up here this year, they used to but this year it's changing with 3 of the 4 duluth high school teams being very competitive.

Currently #1 Excel Energy Center

Past #1 Civic Center - the one and only with clear boards. Host of the best state high school tournament in the country.
Past #2 Met Center - one of the best sheets of ice in the NHL. Host of Edina holiday tourney.

The Big Three!

Currently, places like Aldrich, BIG, Braemar, Parade, Coliseum or anywhere they hold sectional tournament games. I like them all.

The best venue isn't always where you've played, but rather where you can't wait to someday play.

My personal favorite of all time (not a high school arena) is the old Williams Arena. Skating on that ice was a feeling I'll never forget. It is the best site in Minnesotas long hockey history.

I can add to this story. The year was 1970 and I was a peewee. While Slaphappy was scoring all those goals, and the 3 drunks were cheering between sips ... I was hiding underneath Red Lake Falls team box, under the bleachers looking for money that fell out of spectators pockets (dropped through the cracks) when I noticed that there were some holes in the players box near their skates - about 3-6 inches in diameter.

I found a couple old broken sticks (Northland Imperials to be exact) behind the bleachers and stuck them through the holes and in the gap of at least three pairs of skates (between the blade and the boot) and locked the three players together (next line out).

I quickly ran out to watch the game and reaction of the players when their teammates were coming off the ice and the "land-locked" players were trying to jump the boards to go on the ice.

It was quite a scene ... and if I remember correctly ... old slapshooter scored a goal when that happened because Red Lake Falls only had 2 players on the ice because of this prank.

Needless to say ... it was pretty funny for me and a couple of friends of mine.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

I actually missed a couple of slapshooters other goals because we would play 'rubber puck' hockey with broken sticks behind the bleachers during the old Cathedral games.

Also ... Angus .... you've got my curiousity aroused. I think Hibbing Memorial is an absolutely beautiful venue ... great to play in ... and even better to video-tape in. Are you from there? East's old locker room

Post by topshelf » Fri Jan 10, 2003 2:24 pm

Findthetwine- I would assume that juniorhockey is talking about East's locker at the Decc before it got moved over to Pioneer with the other schools before last season. Their old setup was amazing with the big 'E' in the carpet, individual stalls, tv/video equipment, workout equipment, powerade machine, stereo system and all the strobes. However, I would say the best part was all the pictures of the teams that made it to state and the retired jersey's of players that came through the program earlier.

One that hasn't been mentioned that I'd like to throw in the mix is Fogerty Arena in Blaine. It obviously lacks the history of the others or importance of being a section final venue. But the ice is always in great condition, the locker rooms are perfectly sized, the sight lines (even with a packed house) are better than any other 'town' rink, and the stands are warm. The arena is 20 years old and all of the money it has made has been put back into the arena and it shows. It looks as new as the new rink next door. It also has the distiction of having the first electric Zamboni in the US. It is too bad that the atmosphere of a packed house from the old Blaine vs. Anoka or Coon Rapids games seem to be gone for good.

Hey Angus, <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":\">

Vide<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat"> Sc<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat"> ut is right on the money as usual. Ikauniks and Gramer (Dr, John) were tough as nails and both went on to do great things in hockey. Too bad Canada was calling all the shots in the NHL in those days or those two would have been doing damage right along with Hull, Howe and the rest. Gramer played for Yale if I'm not mistaken before moving on to an illustrious career in medicine and Ikauniks got busy showing me and my buddies how to move the puck around trees so as not to get killed being that the rink we played on in the neighborhood in those days was a frozen pond in the woods right between our house and his. By the time I got to second grade the checking was a piece of cake compared to the trees some ran into in those games. Of course Ikauniks had to get back to Harvard after Xmas vacation was over and left us to our own devises. And Vide<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat"> Sc<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat"> ut! Not from Hibbing or Crookston. Just a fan of both of your posts, especially Mr. Shooter. Can that guy tell a story or what? I'm wondering if there are any Little Slapshooters which we should be keeping our eye on coming up the ranks of any programs in the state. I'm thinking there must be with that self-proclaimed great hockey playing geneology as well as the fact that being a good Catholic boy you probably have some offspring. Scout, although I do not know you, a pal of mine does as he coaches for the Flyers of LF.

VS - You are quite the detective, but you're on the wrong track this time. Although I am acquainted with several of the zebras, I think most are punks that love to hand out majors when they get the opportunity! I am familiar with who you speak of and he is a classic - loves to stir the pot when the opportunity arises and this board presents several opportunities for him to do so. TC should have been in the big show when MF was a senior, but the "little general" behind the bench for the Otters prevented it from being so (as well as the head games from the star, MF). Looks like he has his hands full this year. Keep up the interesting commentary! What was your opinion of Fox Sports attempt to make hockey easier to follow when they experimented with the "lighted puck"? Just curious.

I hated the 'lighted puck'. It was a major distraction and anyone who knows the game or has played it doesn't really need to see the puck.

As a matter of fact ... when I film games ... I fuse the viewfinder image with the actual image in my brain using both my peripheral vision in my left eye, and the image provided by the viewfinder in my right eye.

This explains why I rarely miss an opportunity to capture goals, fights, cheerleaders, parents' complaining to referees or whatnot throughout the atmosphere of the arena during a game.

You can certainly follow the play by reading the body language of the players on the ice. Nicest Venue.

Post by Euro90 » Thu Jan 16, 2003 3:48 pm

Well the Gardens is nice but its a dead atmosphere in there and kind of reminds me of going to Kmart with all those blue seats in there. By far Hibbing Memorial has to rank up there as one of the great venues for the northern half of Minnesota. There are several great venues in the southern half of the state too. Including the new areana in Cloquet. But watch out fans for the brand new areana in Theif River Falls...............

Locked
