Jordan Leopold was a good choice for the Hobey Baker Award. And, I'd be much more impressed by an undefeated season if the team actually played the best competition in the state.

I'll go with the 1989 championship. Derek Anderson robs a John Marshall player in OT, and no more than a minute later, Chris Tucker slides a wristshot through the five-hole. Good times.

Propably the most memorable has to be the 96 Duluth East/Apple Valley 5 overtime semifinal game. You had the Dave Spehar and Erik Westrum matchup that year. Also another great game I witnessed was the 89 Jefferson/Roch. John Marshall championship game that was ended in o.t. by a blistering slap shot from the blue line by a streaking Chris Tucker for Jefferson. For John Marshall they had the big defenseman Doug Zmolek, Erik Means, and who could forget the 5'2 scrapping play by Bucky Flores. Jefferson had Tony Bianchi, Tom Pederson, and there goalie who I can't remember his name, (Anderson???)

98'Roseau/Edina

Post by RookieRam8 » Wed Jan 22, 2003 8:50 pm

I would have to say another great memory would have to be the tourny of 98'. When Roseau one of the smallest schools in class "AA", also there first year, Matched up against Edina one of the biggest schools in class "AA", and defending champions. This game ended up going into overtime. With Roseau winning when Phil Larson came in one-one with edina's defenseman and used him as a screen and sent the puck flying upstairs for the game winner. What a game, fans went wild. I remember the announcers saying after the game, "To be the best you must beat the best". Weren't they right as Roseau came to win the title the following year. By far the best game i had ever been at.

My favorite? 1995. Dave Spehar. Three hat tricks. Championship game penalty shot in the third period which gave East the lead over Moorhead and the eventual championship (after he scored one more time).

With the understanding, of course, that this is likely one of the most painful moments for Spuds fans.

The Apple Valley game in '96 was bittersweet. Absolutely fantastic game. Not the ending the Hounds wanted, but still reason to be proud. A classic.

They should've been beaten in the first round of the tourney by Breck, did you see the game? The only reason it went into O.T. was because a Breck player scored on his own net. By the way, Johnny Pohl was in no way "screwed" out of the Hobey Baker, Leopold deserved it.

Moments

Post by joe lulic » Wed Jan 22, 2003 9:21 pm

My earliest memory is my best. 1963 ....Johnson over International Falls 4-3 in overtime for the championship. I will never forget it. In those days, the metro schools were the big underdogs. Falls had a great undefeated team, Johnson was also undefeated. It was a great game played in the old St Paul auditorium. Second best was the East /Apple Valey game. I was at both of them.

My favorite was 1983 and my dad took me to a tourney game and it happened to be the championship. I had no allegiance to either team so I picked Hill to cheer for and he picked Burnsville. Hill went home with an undefeated season and a state championship. I remember to this day thinking how excited those kids looked on the ice. It was nights like those that got me hooked on hockey.

My favorite game as a fan was another painful moment for Moorhead. Hill played them in a semi-final game in 1993 and Moorhead came out on fire and went up 3-0 in the first 8 minutes or so of the game. Hill roared back with 5 unanswered to win the game 5-3. But it was sweet because my brother called when Moorhead scored the third goal to give me hell and tell me Hill was going down. And to this day there is no way Hill deserved to win that game, but they did.

As a Cloquet fan I'd have to give my nod to the '92 tourney when Cloquet came in an underdog and beat a #3 (?) ranked Hill-Murray team. (I recall a twin cities paper speculating on the potential Hill-Murray/Jefferson semi). Of course all of our would-be dreams of a title were dashed the next night when we lost to the eventual champs in Jefferson in OT. That was so heart breaking. We were 56 seconds away from being in the championship game. Dutch Barrett single handedly kept us in the game with his goal-tending. No disrespect to any Moorhead fans, but, I feel that Cloquet was 56 seconds away from a state championship as I really feel they would have beaten Moorhead.

State Tourneys

Post by cyozzie36 » Wed Jan 22, 2003 10:45 pm

Not being too old and loving the Greyhounds my favorite memories would be the 1991 run to the state final. They were underrated, underrespected, and a tough old-fashioned hockey team. Their section final win over Cloquet was incredible where the fire marshal must have left the city because the DECC had people everywhere.

Next up would have to be Spehar's penalty shot. The entire crowd was standing and it was such an awesome moment. You just knew that he would bury it and the Hounds would go on to win.

Finally, the 1998 run was great too. We had to beat the #2 ranked Team and then #3 and finally #4 at the tourney after ending Elk Rivers season in the section finals. (What were they doing in Section 7AA?) Can't say that tourney was not loaded with the best teams in the state.

Also I have to admit it was great to see Roseau win it the following year, in a very Hoosier like story.

I remember that 93 Hill game very well, my childhood neighbor/classmate/goalie for our traveling peewee hockey team Fred Hennen gave up those first three goals for Hill before getting pulled. It was one of the hardest things to see and very devastating for him and his whole family who was there watching. Great comeback though, very memorable game.

Fred Hennen was a darn good goalie though. He was solid the entire year for Hill-Murray and I don't recall any of those three goals really being his fault. They were all nifty two-on-one passes that showed Moorhead was more talented. Dave Gilbert who replaced Hennen in nets was a feel good story as he was the backup all year and never looked that comfortable on varsity. Anyway, good memories.

And that loss to Cloquet in the first round in 1992 was painful. I do remember being down one goal and Hill taking a two penalties in the last two minutes to be two men down. Hill pulled their goalie and almost scored the tying goal 4 on 5. But Cloquet ended up scoring an empty-netter and sealing the deal. They were the better team that night for sure.

1995 State Tourney

Post by DB33Three » Thu Jan 23, 2003 1:31 pm

It was the first tourney I got to go to in person i rember it well caue i got out of school for 2 days me and my dad went down on the way down we picked who we thought would be the winners I picked Rochester Mayo cause I have no clue no one else was picking them and I just thought hey I love an underdog my Dad picked the 3 time defending state champ Jefferson Jaguars.

First game it was Mayo vs White Bear Lake
WBL came out on fire were up 2-0 after the first period and I rember my Dad asking " Are you sure you still like Mayo" and then the second period cam and Mayo on fire scored 3 straight goals are 3-2 and i was thinking yes but then WBL cam right back and tied it at 3-3 and with only 1 minute left in the second period Mayo scored huge momentum swing. And in the third WBL came right back to make it 4-4 and it was back and forth then mayo scored and woin the game 5-4 great game.

Second game it was Moorhead vs St. Paul Johnson
The Spuds came in riding the 3 Cullen Brothers they were very good as the Spuds won easliy with 2 of the brothers getting points. I rember thinking how they were so welled postioned they must have been very well coached then I see there who there coach was there dad was the head Moorhead coach the famous Terry Cullen. I knew that Mayo would have there hands full with the Spuds. Moorhead won 5-2.

Third game of the night Champlin Park vs Edina
The night session at the old St. Paul Civic Center those were some great times. The first game of the night was between Cinderalla Champlin Park vs The Edina Hornets. this was my first time seening the HornetsFans in action they were somthing else as for the gam tied 2-2 after one and throught the second I could feel poeple rooting for CP only to have the Hornets prevail in the end but people were not really caring cause the big game was up next.

The Main Event Jefferon vs East
Jefferson came in the three time defending State Champs only to sorry petey but just get killed by East in the legend of Spehar began with a hat trick and East did what many thought was impossible not only beat the Jaguars but just knock the champs out.

THE SEMIS
Mayo vs Moorhead
I will always remeber this game Mayo up 1-0 nothing after one. then Moorhead came back with 2 in the second and up 2-1. Then in the thrid Mayo and Moorhead traded goals and then it was tied 3-3 with only a minute and second left in the game Moorhead scored it looke dover but then with only 21 seconds left mayo cam back to tie it up and then it went in to 2 OT's only to see the spuds win it on a Cullen goal it was a great game one of the best all time.

East vs Edina
East took care of business won easliy again with Spehar getting yet another hat trick East looked to good to be true they were fyling and clicking in every aspect of the game.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP
East vs Moorhead
one of the best championship game this was a I know i saw the greatest moment it is tied 3-3 and then Spehar gets on a break waya gets pulled down penalty shot everyone standing in the building he scores it went nuts in there it was amazing then later on he gets his third goals to have 3 hat tricks in three games what a player what a game.

I will never forget that tourney it was great I think it was the greatest tourney in the 90's maybe of all time just my opoion but i will never forget it tell me what you think.

DB33Three- How would like to have been the referee that chose to award a penalty shot in the third period of a tied State Title game, talk about doughnuts! I thought that Moorhead coach Cullen was going to blow a vein in his neck.

I'd have to say that my favorite tournament memory was when Hastings came back from being down 2 goals with under 2 min to play in 1999. I think it was either Taft or Welch, not sure... those 2 scored alot but anyway... one of them scored 2 goals 30 seconds apart to tie the game up and send it to OT where Hastings won it. Great game.

I think everyone's history has been tainted a little over time. I believe, I may be wrong, but hound hockey will probably remember better than I, but Spehar's penalty shot tied the game and East's Ted Suikkonen (sp) scored the game winner later. The penalty shot was awesome and a great moment but I don't thinnk it won the state title just tied the game.

If I'm wrong I'm sorry but seems to me it only tied the game.

Grand Rapids State Championship in 1976

Post by JLS 81 » Thu Jan 23, 2003 3:17 pm

My greatest memory was my first visit to the state tournament actually in 1976. Probably just due to the magnitude of being at St. Paul Civic Center for the first time and watching my favorite team, the Grand Rapids Indians win three games to take the championship from Steve Christoff and the Richfield Spartans. At age 12 all I could do was dream that one day I would dawn that orange and black and skate to heroics at the state tournament like Pete Decenzo, Dan Lempe, Erin Roth and all the rest of the Rapids team.
The dreams of youth, lets hope they never go away for kids.
Since than I have missed only a handfull of tournaments and make certain now my 9 year old son comes every year with me as well. He loves it more than I do. Great to pass on one of the treasures of Minnesota. Hope we can all continue this great tournament experience well on into the future. Good Luck to all the teams on 2002-2003

Warroad-Edina '88

Post by removableblade » Thu Jan 23, 2003 4:03 pm

Who could forget the David versus Goliath Warroad-Edina battle in the 1988 semi-finals? The game was a thriller, even though in the end Edina won 2-1 in 2 or 3 ot's. The game had everything; big school vs small school, lovable Warroad vs hated Edina, upstart Warroad vs perennial State tourney Edina etc. I even remember the papers back then reminding us of the infamous 1969 final between the two teams where one of the Edina players cheap-shotted Warroad's Henry Bouchea knocking him out of the game. I even remember seeing Henry Bouchea in the crowd that night. The game resembled a home game for Warroad as the entire Arena less the Edina section cheered loudly for Warroad. The two teams fought to a tooth-and-nail 1-1 finish in regulation. I distinctly remember Warroad's Dan Marvin hitting the pipe in one of the ot's. My greatest memory of the big show.

Petey, Leopold was the best choice. However, bobbyorrlives all jacked up on red wing spirit, probably meant that Pohl got robbed of a finalist spot. He definitely should have been a top 5 finalist and wasn't.

Johnny Pohl was and is an excellent hockey player who everyone from I falls to Detroit Lakes and over to White Bear have constantly underestimated his ability and potential. In high school it was guys like Petey saying "he can't posibly play that well against the likes of Jefferson AA superstars. No way is he Mr. Hockey."

In college, "no way should the gophers sign him when they have their pick of AA and junior A studs." He won't be able to play at that level.

2 years later as a junior..."why is he a captain, he's way overrated."

Maybe after leading the nation in scoring (All-American) and being a captain of a national championship team, maybe then he can get the recognition from some of the AA contingents.
Or maybe it will only come once he's on an NHL team. Oh wait, he is.

I can't wait to hear the next question mark put on this kid from the likes of Petey AA's. Its probably something like "he's way over payed, 2 million a year, I still don't think hes even Mr. Hockey.....how the heck is he playing in the NHL after 5 full seasons. He could have never scored against Jefferson."

Also, the question posed on this particular site was best memory/team. I was at the championship game between Red Wing and Warroad. It was an excellent game. For many people I'm sure it probably was the best memory of a state tourney game. The beauty of this tournament is it has had a magical memory for many of us. As a fan, player, coach, cheerleader, parent, referee....state high school hockey is just another sentence for unbelievable memories.

Personally, I was at the Apple Valley vs. Duluth East game and it was the best I've ever seen. If you were there it would be awfully hard to find one better than that!

Hey hey hey, I've never said that great players can't come from small programs. I mean, seriously, look at the Brotens as clear examples otherwise. The only beef I've ever had is with teams winning the Class A tournament and being undefeated, but having not really beaten the best teams to be undefeated in the first place.

However, I saw Johnny Pohl play as a freshman, and he fell a few times, and I thought for sure that he was a bust. But, over and over again, he has proved me wrong, and I'm certainly not afraid to admit that he's one of the best guys we've had around here in some time.

So Many Games, So little time

Post by DaJacks » Thu Jan 23, 2003 10:57 pm

It's obvious the state tourney has countless. There are a few however in recent history that come to mind. First off you cant mention great state memories without givin the nod to the 5 ot marathon in 95. East/AV...the goal that wasnt??? was it in?? did it hit the pipe??? as much as it pains me to say it...i think mills burried that one myself. but all's well that ends well!! AV went on to win the championship..
96 the friday night late game curse continued, Hill took Edina to 3 overtimes. I remember this one cause they showed highlights from the East/AV game between the second and 3rd OT Edina goalie comes up with huge save, edina takes it down scores, game over, the following year the friday night late game went 1 OT, the following year went 2...crazy huh???
i think it was 99, Hastings opens up huge with a 3 or 4 goal first, then (i even forget who they were playin...i just remember hastings<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/grin.gif ALT=" >D"> ) they came back to take a 2 goal lead with 2 minutes left, hastings got it to 1, and with 2.6 seconds left Danny Welch burries it to send it to OT, hastings wins shortly thereafter.
The list goes on and on...those are the ones that stand out..
