Everyone underselling Hill-Murray's chance and then complaining when they make another run. (A personal favorite of mine)
3. Seeing 8 teams play on Thursday, all with the same dream.
2. Watching whether the Pagestat ratings can outduel the section seedings.
1. Sitting in that Arena, watching High School kids make memories for a lifetime.

Hearing Lou Nannies voice on the TV. it seems to just shoot images of past state hockey times into my mind.
#7. Meeting all the people with the common love for MN HS hockey
#6.hearing the screams and shouts of the game in your hotel room..which is just a block from the Xcel
#5.Seeing the hyped players show what they really have for one last time in the season as they play in the "big ones"
#4.Seeing northern teams show private schools and such that it doesnt take a 4 figure tuition to play great hockey <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">
#3. The general camraderie between students all over the great state of Minnesota. Everyone is friednly and welcoming to all.
#2.The cat and mouse game played every year between authorities and students seeking a good time..haha<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">
#1. The gathering of all types of people for one reason: to see the greatest teams of the greatest state for hockey dice it out and declare champions.!

I've always enjoyed going and seeing the place go bananas when somebody scores against the Jaguars. Then exactly 2 sections of people cheer when Jefferson scores, while the rest of the fans sit there. Same thing happens with Edina, but for those 3 years, man, everybody hated the Jags, and they danced right through town.

the lists

Post by hockeydad » Mon Feb 10, 2003 11:28 pm

All these lists are great, and show that two-classes have not ruined the state tourney.
Top 10 things I remember fondly about watching the state tourney.

10: One or two teams pulling off upsets in the sections and making it to St. Paul
9: Overtime games on TV that last past midnight. (But not when they have to come back and finish the game in the morning, then play again later that day).
8: Remembering watching the games on Channel 11 in the late 60s and early 70s when you were a kid. (Warroad and Henry Boucha vs. Edina and wondering where the hell was "Greenway of Coleraine")
7. Rooting against the cakeeaters.
6. Grudging admiration for the cakeeaters when they win it all (again).
5. Waiting for a new hero to emerge (Remember Reggie Miracle?)
4. The excitement in school during state tourney week. (I was a sub teacher at Columbia Heights in 83 and at John Marshall a couple years later).
3. Watching Hill-Murray win their first title after all those tries with my then girlfriend (now wife), a Hill-Murray grad.
2. Trying to pick the brackets in the office pool.
1. Taking my son to watch the AA championship game (Blaine vs. Duluth East), the first time for both of us at the state tourney in person

dog36...you must be a Johnson grad. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/mad.gif ALT=">:"> Actually so is my dad. I'm a Harding alum and although I didn't play Hockey I followed it quite closely during my days. You are right in that even though we were rivals, I always rooted for Johnson once they got to the Civic Center. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

10. Walking up that huge ramp into the Civic Center and seeing it jammed full with thousands of people ahead of you.
9. Rooting for each St. Paul and Minneapolis public school through sections and being disappointed if/when they were all eliminated.
8. Pretending I'm sick on Thursday afternoons so I could stay home from school (or work).
7. Pulling for the northern schools or the schools in the tourny for the first time.
6. Hoping that Hill-Murray loses in the next round.
5. Each year holding out hope that at some points in my life Harding will make it back. (**sigh**)
4. Going to the games and sitting next to an oldtimer from the Eastside or South St. Paul talking about the good old days when hockey was played outside.
3. Having the late games on Thursday or Friday go to OT and realizing that a great day of hockey just won't end.
2. Seeing the players during pre-game intros looking like they want to hurl.
1. On Saturday night when the gloves, sticks and helmets go flying in to the air in unison and half the players pile on for joy and the other half sit on their knees and sob.

Locked
