MNHOCK19:
I for one was very proud of the boys on the SW team, they outplayed Shattuck at every aspect of the game. I was most impressed by the way they rebounded from the loss the night before, I agree with your statement that Shattuck will gain a big advantage as the season goes on because of the extra practice time, especially on special teams ( PP, PK )

I am a little surprised by your prediction of Shattuck winning on Oct. 5. regardless of your thoughts I thought you would stick with the Mn. boys. Whoever wins that game will not change the fact that we have the ability in Minnesota to spread our top talent into 5 teams and also have some playing juniors and still be competitive with Shattucks $35,000 a year hockey team. I would like to give my thanks out to all of the coaches at the youth and H.S. level that put their time and experience into developing all of these players.

I know there are people caught up in the name of the league, the selection process etc. but I think you guys did improve the process from last year, last season you put way too much stock into whether they were all conference, and point totals, and some players in weak conferences were chosen ahead of better players in tougher conferences. This mistake was quickly identified when play began when those players could not compete at that speed, from what I have seen this year there are fewer mistakes. The biggest mistake this season obviously is having the North Dakota team in the league instead of fieldind another MN. team in their place, Sundays 19-0 game was pretty sad to watch, and now you have a situation where the stats for the league are not going to show the accurate ability of the players because some of the teams play N.D. several times and some teams only play them once.

I know from talking to you and mnhock29 that you are continuing to try to improve the league, and you have my support. I think this league is the best thing to come along in HS Hockey in a long time and even though I am disapointed that you would make a prediction against the MN. boys I appreciate the time and effort you are putting into having this league.

Earlier in this thread, after I wholeheartedly endorsed the Elite League and its name, I was accused of being connected with the league in some way. I am not. I am just a parent whose kids who have played at the highest levels (with the exception of the NHL).

I couldn't agree more with Shutout's comments above, and I think the name Elite League is both accurate and appropriate. And if the name offends someone because their kid was passed over in the evaluation processs, well my advice is to have their kid find some way to get noticed, either by playing better or if they feel that is not the issue, then by associating with the right people who can get him noticed. And if the latter is considered "politics", well too bad, because that is the way the world works some time.

The Elite League is the best thing to have happened to MN high school hockey for quite some time and I commend the organizers, principally John Russo, for putting in the time and effort to make it a great league.

Weird Elite League Schedule

Post by onedogtoomany » Tue Sep 23, 2003 10:48 pm

After reading about last weekend's Team NE 19-0 stomping of No Dak, I decided to check the schedule and found some weird scheduling. Get this, Team NW leads the league after three weeks with a 6-2-1 record. So far, they have played No Dak 3 times (1/3 of their games). It gets better though, they still have two more games with No Dak on their schedule. In contrast, Team SW only gets the No Dak team twice all season, Teams North, SE & NE each get them only 3 times. Why such an imbalance in the schedule?

Team NW should have any easy route to the title with this scheduling advantage and their players will really have some padded stats before its all done. This is really bad for the league in general as it skews everything. Any ideas on why No Dak is so bad and why NW gets to play them so much? Any way to fix this here in mid-season? Probably not but I think its a black eye for the league in an otherwise good season.

Four teams are at the top separated by one point after 3 weeks. Who's the best team so far? SE has beat SW twice in three meetings. NE beat SE in their only meeting so far. NE and NW have split their two games so far. Its pretty tight at the top.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub33.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUser ... toomany at: 9/23/03 11:00 pm

Sorry, I've been out of town. The site is updated with last weekend's results. For whoever asked, I serve as the league's communications director. A voluntary role, I do media relations, web work (sorry it's so primitive, but it fits our budget of $0) and all of the scout outreach (the program sends summaries of weekend stats, results, etc. to all college coaches and select junior and NHL scouts). I was selected to do this because of my experience doing sports-related communication work for a variety of clients at the world's top pr firm as my day job.

We're constantly wrestling with the ND thing. At times they've been competitive (they lost to Shattuck 4-2 and to NW (who beat NE)5-1) and I think the program wants to better Minnesota first, but the region second. Obviously the NE game was good for neither. Let's just say we're watching it closely and will adjust if they continue to not be competitive.

Scheduling, due to game site locations, is a bit of a nightmare. There's no real way to tell who will be number one year-to-year, so while an unbalance is unavoidable, it may appear even more unbalanced as certain teams emerge better than others throughout the year. Every team has the same chance come playoff time.

As for the southern MN thing, I have to again stress that if there were 100 outstanding players there, we'd find a spot for them. If Harrington and Duncan would've stayed, they'd be playing. Hovick, Roberts and Wenzel are all playing. We looked at some others, but they just didn't measure up. This doesn't mean they're not strong players.

I can't completely remember what the Beaverson thing was, but I guess I'd have to disagree. I've never heard NHL scouts so excited about someone. I think we would have seen him continue to excel at WBL. As for him being too physical, that is one of the criticisms about what the state is missing. I guess I wouldn't condemn that. All I know is that he's going to UND (who doesn't seem to make too many mistakes), was a USHL all-star and I think named that league's top prospect (despite his plus-minus on a pretty mediocre team) and will be selected high in the NHL draft. That's it for now. Thanks for reading. Hope you can all come out and catch some of the action.

What does measure up mean? Why not let us have a team that can participate in a few weekends and see. Is it measure up by some hockey gods in the Cities. If so we never have measured up. Maybe this season is a down one for our area.

I believe the best way for our area players to be served and developed is to have them have someone who is on there side prepare them for the opportunity that MN Hockey has given them to compete against the best in the state in front of the scouts.

I like what has been done in the scouting but surely the idea that ND and Thunder Bay kids need that more than my So. MN boys is clearly not correct and not a good situation for MN Hockey. Shattuck is a good measuring stick they should stay and Team Wisconsin is usually pretty good. I think if I was allowed to have training camp and pick my team like I have in the past my guys could stand the test. All I am asking for is a chance for my guys to show what they can do.
Hockey Nut in So. MN

Mnhockey19:

I see you have deleted your earlier post! WHY?

I would really like to hear more about what the plans are with the stats that you are sending to the scouts and posting on the web. As onedog followed up on my earlier statement team N.W. is now leading the league (mostly due to playing N.D. a third of the time) while teams like S.W. and S.E. have played each other 3 times and are tied for second. I can only assume that the N.W. players are putting up some pretty impressive stats scoring 19 goals in one game against North Dakota.

P.S. ( your post was on Monday not Friday )

I am waiting too. I think they usually post them a little later in the week so it should be sometime either tonight or tomorow if I had to guess.

NE scored 19 goals on ND - NW beat NE 3-0 the day before. ND apparently had a meltdown this weekend, because they have played better. There are other teams that are not doing great either - Wisconsin has only won one game, and tied SE 4-4 on Sunday.

if i deleted that post i certainly didn't mean to and have no idea how i did it! whatever... monday / friday - too much to think about. regardless i take back that post.

you'll have to ask mnhock29 about the stats. however, i'm certain he's behind due to being out of town.

the scheduling for the league is somewhat of a nightmare. we had some of the same issues last year with teams not playing eachother enough or too much. i think every year we will have that problem. we may always have, at least we're aware of it.

As I said, I've been out of town. Sorry about the delay. The stats are up on hselitehockey.com. Click on the link under Scout Updates, or under last week's results on the home page.
