How about the Mid to late 80's warroad team led by Larry Olimb and Chad Erickson between the pipes that went undefeated that got nocked out in the first round of the Section Playoffs. By i want to say either Bemidji or Moorhead. Anyone know for sure?

Warroad's upset

Post by rsolway » Fri Jan 02, 2004 10:33 pm

Warrior

The year was 1986. I heard the score on the radio and couldn't believe it. I had been looking forward to seeing Warroad at state all year. A couple of night's later one of Edina's best teams ever lost in the semis to Richfield and future NHL goalie Damian Rhodes. As a result, we all watched Burnsville and Hill Murray that year instead. Too bad it wasn't Edina and Warroad.

Of all teams, a nothing team called the Moorhead Spuds pulled off the big upset. Who was to know that 6 years later they'd be starting a hockey dynasty in section eight.

I think Warroad was undefeated that year until that upset. The next year they made it to state and stunned Hill Murray 5-1 in an awesome game, but lost the next day in a frustrating gtame to Burnsville. The next year they were undefeated again (Olimb's senior year), and lost in double ot to Edina, who won state the next night. After Edina scored, there were about 250 out 17,000 fans cheering. Even though I was from Edina, I had to put my hands in my pockets out of respect.

Warroad has a great team this year, and all but beat Edina in a game that could have gone either way. It looks like they had a great tourney, and I hope they make a statement at state (I just wish they were in AA--with the right bounces, they're good enough to win it all).

St. Thomas !!!

Post by coach » Sun Jan 04, 2004 12:10 am

the biggest choke was STA in 1985! But because it was St. Thomas Academy we probably all discredit it as being a choke.

They had won the St. Paul Conference, beating out Hill-Murray and Johnson that year, (Randy Skarda, Dan Brooks and many more worth mentioning) also winning a Twin Cities Championship over Minneapolis Southwest against Tom Chorske. Both Hill and Johnson went to the state tourney that year! But I guess the conference chumps couldn't get it done.

St. Thomas proved their hockey worth by losing to Sibley in the first round of the sections! A weak section at that! Biggest waste of talent team of all time!

But it was St. Thomas Academy, so I shouldn't be so hard.

The all-time drunk

Rapids loses 11-1 to Hill Murray in the 1991 state semi-finals. The Rapids players were out drinking after they beat Bloomington Kennedy in the quarters.

IF was a 1 man show last year

Post by Uncle Puckhead » Mon Jan 05, 2004 3:06 pm

Gordo13,
Sorry, but IF was a one man show last year. Johnson & Meyers are in Bozeman both struggling, Baldwin just quit the Thunder, and Cramer has spent more time in the penalty box than the ice this year. The IF kids are just learning how to score for the first time in 3 years. They depended to much on # 13 to do it. How is Andrew Dault doing for the Thunder this year?

IF in 2003

Post by Uncle Puckhead » Mon Jan 05, 2004 9:49 pm

Gordo13,
I agree that Dault sucks!!!!! He plays goon hockey, so he fits right in over in the Fort. He'll be done in a year.
I've followed the Falls for the last 3 years. I'm not from there, but I've seen them play at least 10 times a year.
This year, I've seen the Rochester Tourney and LOW.
There is talent on this team, they have just relied on 1 person for 3 years, and it's going to take some time. They are solid on defense, I wish they'd move Drew Fisher back there and let him rush the puck. He's going to be a good one. His brother and LaVigne are solid D, but not big scorers. Cramer, Barr, and Krozska can score.
I don't think they use their points enough. Shoot from the point and chase the rebounds. This is a scrappy team.
My thought is that Coach Prettyman will have these kids ready to go by the end of February. The section is weak and the Falls has played a tough schedule and stands just as good of a chance as any team in section 7A.
I think that we can agree to disagree!
PS Are you Ben??? If not, you should use a different name.

no im not ben a friend of mine put that i dont know how to change it and it would be stupid if a was. i will admit ben was a big part of there successfor two years he did not play much in grade10 but baldwin won a lot of games for them last year ibet they dont go to state in 2002 without him and they dont have a chance to go to state in 03 and johnson is struggling know put he was a big part last year for them. two years ago the broncos had the best line in state the highest scoring line in gordon, johnson, and biondich so at leat admit they were not a one man show. tell me how to change my name
