1974 Edina Hornets: Greatest H.S. Hockey team ever

Post by edinahornets9 » Wed Jan 07, 2004 12:05 am

Ok for those who want historical info just look at the 74' season. Will Ikola being the coach was probobly one of the best h.s. hockey coaches of all time. That year they pretty much dominated every team they played. In the state semi-finals they were trailing SIbley who upened defending champ Hibbing. Edina was trailing 3-0 with 10 minutes left in the 3rd period. Edina's offense exploded scoring 5 unaswered goals to pull off the 5-3 comeback win. With the win they went on to the title game and beat Bemidji 6-0. The team averaged about 7 goals per game. Attendance for the entire tournament that year was 84,210. Ten years later attendance broke the 100,00 mark with 100,902 in attendance. Hopefully this year they can sell out the Xcel for the tournament or come close. Thats if the open the upper levels. So theres some history for the old timers and veterns of the game. For every else that doesn't give a crap then you don't know much about hockey or don't respect it. Those players would probobly own you in a hockey fight. Plus most people in here are fans or veterans. Oh and for the Elk River guy, stop making your team look bad making comments like that. Especially after the Holiday Classic. Thats all for now.

Jags For Sure the Best

I concur, '93 Jags were insane. That team not only had talent, they had the confidence to know that every time they were lacing up, they were going to crush their opponent...and they did.

Of course, it's tough to compare teams and players from different periods of time. Players today are bigger, stronger and faster (although not necessarily more skilled) than players of past generations. If we're looking at which teams were most dominnant during their respective runs to the title, the '74 Hornets and '93 Jags would rank right at the top.

However, we can't forget the great I. Falls teams from the mid '60's. The 1965 and 1966 teams blew through their competition, going undefeated while producing some great players like Tim Sheehy and Ronnie Beck. The Falls teams of this era were one game away from winning 5 consecutive titles...pretty impressive in any era.

Hey Old Timer, I appreciate you. You're right too according to the things my father said about those great teams from the Falls. It would probably be good then to recognize the Eveleth teams w/Mayasich and all the great SP Johnson teams. Thanks for the good perspective.

one of the best runs

My 2 cents. Rams were runner-up in '57, champs in '58,'59, undefeated in 60, but lost in semis of section, champs in '61.

1974

That 1974 Edina East team was pretty damn good. The 1974 Bemidji team was one that sparked my interest in high school hockey, as I grew up in Bemidji. I did a little research earlier this fall and looked at the microfilm newspaper articles of the 1974 state tournament and posted my thoughts, the post might still be in the back pages somewhere. One thing I remember from the article on the championship game is one of the Bemidji players commenting on how fast Edina was, they were behind him before he could blink.

Another thing that came up in the earlier discussion was that there were no Christmas tournaments in 1974. This was during the height of the energy crisis, so schools were trying to save money on travel expenses. Bemidji and Grand Rapids usually had a home and away series, but that year only played one game in Bemidji, which I remember vividly, both teams wore their dark home jerseys and GR won 6-5 in a hard fought game. Anyway it's possible that Edina East may have not gone undefeated if they had played the normally very competitive Christmas tourneys. Plus this year was the last year if I recall, that did not include the private schools. So those things may put an asterisk on that Edina East team's record, but I would argue that they're the best Edina team ever and one of the best ever state champions.
