Worst Record/Team To Make or Win State?

Post by PUCKIN AA » Thu Jan 08, 2004 8:53 am

In your estimation what team had the worst record but managed to make state or place or win? Thoughts...Who, When?

don't remember their record, but I'd put money on Rosemount in the "Tier 2" days.

They seem to make it to state every year with a losing record, it is puzzling.

I do believe that last year's Fergus Falls team had the worst record of any of them to get into state, they ENDED the tourney a couple games under .500, but they did beat Princeton in the process.............EGF had about a .500 record one year going into the tourny and whent all the way to the finals..........

Last year Lakeville was below .500 and made the big show. Ended up lossing big in the second game to WBL. It was one of the uglyest games in recent years with well over 25 penalties in all. Somehow Lakeville got the sportsmanship award. Guess they felt sorry for them?

Hockeydad,

You are correct in your assumption that Rosemount had the worst record of any team to make/place at the state tourney. If we are counting Tier II (and I assume those of us who remember Tier II have tried to rid ourselves of those memories), then the 1992 Rosemount team takes the prize.

They entered section playoffs with one win. They rattled off three in a row to get to the tourney and then won two more before Greenway finally knocked them off in the "championship" game. They ended with six wins for the season.

Tier 1

When the state went to the tier 1 and tier 2 it was something that was pretty bad for high school hockey. Some teams were on the border of being the last seed in Tier 1 for sections or the first seed for Tier 2. So it would be like having to play Bloomington Jefferson in the opening round or play Farmington. What I'm getting at is some teams were accused of attentionally losing games to make the tier 2 tournament. This hasn't been proven but, the tier tournaments didn't work and that's why they switched to A vs. AA.
