Dave Solmana for 1320 AM KOZY Grand Rapids. Only thing is him and the analyst get off topic sometimes during the intermission and talk about old Daryl Olson (made up name) and ice fishin' on Winnie or some typical nortern minneota topac. Otherwise they do a pretty good job in my opinion.

You guys up north don't know how good you have it. We metro folks either have to go to the game or read about it in the paper. I remember in 94 listening to a Jags-Elks game at home, but that was certainly an exception. It would be awesome to get the game on the radio.

i'm gonna have to go with Jim Errickson (SP) from princeton, he's a great guy, has a great voice, and has came up and done our games on his own time.

I know them all. From Rams Hockey to Larry the "knute" to "Moose" to Brad to Hogan's Heroes Schultz to Sam to Paul to Frank to Dave and Tom, to Wayne from TRF to Brad from FF to whoever.

In my opinion ... the best is who really gets into in emotionally.

<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat"> - they all have their own unique style!

There's a guy in Brainerd that is second to none. He does pre-game, intermission, and post game interviews with the coaches. He's a walking stat book and i'm sure he knows more about the other teams stats than they do themselves. It's quite impressive. Sorry, i'm not sure what his name is but I would have to agree that we have it good in the north.

I would have to agree with videoscout that to each their own on the play by play but our guy in Brainerd is tops when it comes to preperation.

broadcasts

And why can't some of the local stations, or even Brown college broadcast some metro games?

If I could make a suggestion, get your local stations to broadcast on a website. It is a simple and inexpensive thing to do and it would provide accessibility to the rest of the state and to your school's alum who are living outside the state. Everyone could then follow some of the great rivalries.

When my youngest was playing Juniors I could occasionally catch a game by web-cast, it was great.

When you say Brad from FF, who are you referring to? Fergus Falls? Cuz to the best of my knowledge, Jeff Swedberg does the games in Fergus. Might be different this year as I haven't listened to a game yet.
Jeff is good, but I really like Craig Olson, who does the games occasionally, along with pretty much every sport Fergus has to offer. The guy knows his stuff better than most people I've ever met, and he knows how to call a game. Sometimes its hard to get a visual image of the game based on radio announcers, but Craig is one of the best to where you can actually "see" what is happening.

Jim Erickson from princeton is a great one. A lot of the times he travels on the bus with the team to the far away games, or he drives the WQPM Van. Last year he rode with us to Chisago I believe it was and we accidently left him at the Chisago Arena, man was that embaressing...

Craig Olson and Jeff Swedberg

Scheids ... my bad ... yes ... I was referring to Jeff Swedberg and his color sidekick Brian Welle. I've always enjoyed listening to and using their play-by-play while shooting a Fergus Falls game. Jeff has been accused of being a bit biased, but hey ... hometown radio guys have that privilige up here in the northland. You won't find too many radio guys as loyal to their team as Jeff. He wears the colors and all.

Craig Olson is another great play-by-play guy. I haven't worked with Craig since the early days whenRobby Olson spear-headed my brief stint with the Otters (2 year stint) back when one of my favorite coaches was at the helm in otterland (Brad Bergstrom) ... it may have even been before that when Brian Vatnsdal was behind the bench. I'm not sure now... senility is settling in you know.

Anyway... when I said Brad from FF ... I knew I was thinking Jeff Swedberg ... but I may have been mixing him up with that great golfer from Alexandria.

In my opinion ... Frank Fee and Scott Kleven (Crookston duo) are amongst the best with their introspection and observation into the game at hand.

Brian Schultz from Brainerd is second to none in his preparation for the game. When one listens to him on the radio ... you could swear there are 18,000 people at the game, an arena with two bands, and several reporters roaming the lockerrooms, concourse and mezzanine. He has sound bites from coaches, great music and a mixing board that even Michael Jackson and Slapshooter would envy. He's technically creative and really enjoys his work.

Hell ... rumor has it that other stations in the state have offered him lucrative deals to cover games that they can't cover feasibly, whether they're having problems with logistics or conflict of interest with other sports/games.

Dave Harris and Tom Savageau also do a great job with Alexandria. Dave is probably the 'granddaddy of them all' as he has been doing this for nearly 40 years. The only time I get disappointed with Dave is when he doesn't show up for a game that I'm covering because he's off to either Florida, Texas or Hawaii playing golf.

I could go on and on ... and I probably will at a later post as this thread evolves.

<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat"> "The history of the world is the record of a man in quest of his daily bread and butter." ---H.W. Van Loon, The Story of Mankind

No list would be complete without mentioning Don Olson from TRF and Jack Swanson from Roseau. Both did an excellent job in the 70's and 80's, in fact Swanson went on to be the voice of the "Badgers." Surely these two set the pace for today's play-by-play announcers.

Roseau's Bernie Burgraff from the 60's & 70's. Listening to his call just made you more eager to someday don the G & W.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub33.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUser ... ams1981 at: 1/12/04 11:27 am
