There have been a lot of great goals, a lot of important goals. That being said, Spehar's penalty shot in '95 against Moorhead was memorable. The electricity in the rink...well, I guess you had to be there to experience it.

Jefferson-Cloquet, 1993

I can't remember who scored it. Maybe Checco, maybe MacDonald, but whoever scored to send it into OT against Cloquet with about a minute left, that's got to be it. That was the goal that the threepeat possible and kept alive the eventual 60 game unbeaten streak. The OT goal, of course, wasn't bad either.

Chris Tucker also had a huge goal in OT in 1989 vs. John Marshall. Of course, it wasn't a very hard shot, nor should it have been difficult to save, but it certainly was a clutch goal.

Gopher 101, Spehar wasn't w/ Duluth East in 2002 & 2003. Although I would have to say that his penalty shot was the greatest in State history.

Danny Welch's goal with about .05 seconds left was unbelievable, he intercepted it at the blue line line skated it in. Another would be who ever scored the goal for Apple Valley vs. Duluth East in the really long game 5OT at the Civic Center. That was the game when i was a peewee had practice at 7am Saturday mourning after getting home about 3:30.

Ditto on the Welch goal. I was in the seat right behind the goal. Truly unbelievable.

It was Aaron Dwyer who scored for AV to end it.

1970 Southwest VS Edina

I'm sure that goal was one of the greatest. Bouncing off the chest of a player and into the net. Way before my time but I still hear about it. Southwest Goaltender Brad Shelstad would then become a Gopher Legend.

In recent memory I'd have to say Welch's was the sweetest with .2 seconds left to win the game, what made it even more amazing was he scored about 40 seconds earlier to tie the game before winning it.

While Welch's was the sweetest i'd have to say i've never seen 18,000 fans (minus the Eden Prairie section) sent into such a frenzee as when Andy Sertich tied the game in the closing seconds of the '01 quarters... The arena was still buzzing when Gino Guyer blew the roof off the xcel with his goal first shift of OT!

i would have to agree that the av game winner in ot against east would have to be up there. i remember watching that game as i was pretty young at the time, and falling asleep during overtime only to awake for the last couple ot's. one of the best games ever played in minnesota. about brad shelstad, what a great career he had...maybe one of the best goalies in minnesota history. he now lives in wadena, used to coach but now does radio commentary, knows his hockey.
