No more bench celebrations!

Post by tooold2tell » Mon Jan 26, 2004 6:32 pm

Sorry kids, but this relatively new Celebration act has got to come to an end, and soon. Not sure when and where it all started, but to me, it has become a form of taunting and is starting to cause some problems. Can a Ref call an unsportsmanlike conduct for this? I think we all know what I'm talking about, when your team scores, all five players, rush over to the bench, and receive high fives from all there teammates. How about, we just lineup at Center Ice, and play some more hockey? How about the coaches take a stand here, and tell there players to cut the "I" scored, "so look at me tirade", and end this once and for all? Act like you have scored a few times, and play the game between the whistles and not the benches. Just a thought!!

You said it yourself. You call it the "I scored so look at me tirade," yet ALL 5 PLAYERS skate to the bench to give high fives to excited teammates. What does this take, an extra 15-20 seconds for a faceoff?
How is it a selfish celebration if the whole team is involved?
I think there are much more pressing issues in hockey than this one.

Bech Celebrations

Post by MNPuckster27 » Mon Jan 26, 2004 7:35 pm

I think it is great... A team celebration as opposed to an individual one... just like after a Home Run when everyone lines up at the plate to congratulate the player(s) on the field... Also, brings emotion to the game which is what HS hockey is all about.

Come on you cratetchy old curmudgeon, go play majong with the old ladies. These are kids, let them have their day. It does not distract from the game, it does not delay you from your bed time by more than a minute. Let them have their celebrations, it is good to see them have fun.

bench celebration

I don't think it adds any time between faceoffs. The players are usually doing this while the ref is reporting the scores. After they skate by the bench, they go to the goalie by the blue line and everyone takes their spot for the faceoff.

i agree. and as long as they keep the celebration to themselves it is fine. its when they start doing the celebrating around or right in front of the opponents bench that it should be taunting...not when they are just being happy for putting a point on the board

I think that bench celebrations are the best kind of celebration. I think it is way better than kids doing the "goldy shuffle" that bill goldsworthy used to do. This celebration not only involves the whole team, but it helps to pump the whole team up. This is just my opinion though.

this is a dumb thread you just contridicted your self, the "I" scored celebration when the 5 skaters go through the line at the bench then the goalie involving the entire "team".

"Hey guys, if we score a goal today, whatever you do, don't high five eachother. And especially don't get the guys on the bench involved! Hey, 4th line guys don't deserve a high five. I want you to go straight to the face off circle. If you so much as smile or shout out in excitement, you're benched."

Hey oldtimer, too bad you weren't a coach. Calling all coaches. Lets find out what community this complaint came from, go in and romp and have all players on the ice high five as a sign of team unity. Maybe this upset fan can also get the parents to stop cheering for the team when they score as well - lets take the emotion out of the game? Maybe your squad should equal the pride of other organizations.

I'm not here to ruin your fun, just think it's getting carried away when both teams benches are on the same side of the ice? Emotion is a huge part of the game, and I am in no way attacking team unity after a goal. Oh, and I'm sure 4th line jimmy can hardly wait for tommy to score again, so he can stand up on the bench and wait for him to come by for his 5th high 5 of the game. So don't let tooold2tell spoil your fun. Oh, by the way, the I, is usually the first guy to the bench.

High 5 elbow!

Post by coach » Tue Jan 27, 2004 12:56 am

High five elbow happens when you are not properly warmed up and proceed to high five, five or more times in a 2 hour period. Hey 2old, these kids are in high school, not an old folks home. Heck, when you think about it, high school kids probably have some of the strongest wrists and elbows in town. And I don't mean hockey.

Bench celebrations

Post by Hockeybrain » Tue Jan 27, 2004 5:16 am

Bench celebrations are great except for one thing. Occasionally the 'emotion' referred to is not genuine but is part of an 'act' that all the players feel compelled to perform. In a tight game one senses that the players are really excited but in these 10-0 romps where teams are still engaging in this it is neither genuine celebration nor is it sportsmanlike; it is intended to contribute to the other teams embarassment.

Celebrations are fine if it's team oriented. However, celebrating in front of the other teams bench in swarms is not okay.

As far as the comments about tooldtootell. He is one of the best athletes to ever come out of International Falls!

How many remember Hill Murray in sections about 6-7 yrs. ago. They used to hog pile at their bench, some guys got pretty good air. I don't care for Hill personally but when I saw that I liked it. TEAM celebrations are great.

It's not disrespectful, if you don't like it then don't let 'em score.

I agree with the chieftan, if you don't like the celebration, stop them from scoring. People will have enough time in the older lives to show less excitement. As a player, when there is success, you should feel the excitement, and to show it like that is a great thing!

<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p">
