What happened to this board!

Post by Hockaholic » Tue Jan 27, 2004 11:33 pm

Last year was my first year on this board and I found out quickly that if you don't have anything constuctive or informative to say, you better be ready to take a good body check. Slappy, Videoscout, Bluesbuddy just to name a few have put a number of people in their place, from time to time. The point of this new topic is some of you new users should read alot more and yap alot less. It seems that if you click on a topic that looks like it may be interesting lately, about three replies down it has already turned into a head bashing contest. Rookies, seriously. If this type of activity keeps up it won't be worth clicking on anymore. You are ruining what used to be a helpful informative site where people could share knowledge or information about all of Minnesota High School Hockey. Try reading the (Read before posting). Go ahead and hack at me. I won't stoop to your level. Get on or get OFF!

Well Verb1999's done everything he could so far to keep these rookies in check. It's tough, Hockaholic. Sometimes they just don't learn.

Very sickening. Very very sickening. They make me look like this <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/sick.gif ALT=":x"> when I read what they say.

not just rookies

Post by BearCheer » Wed Jan 28, 2004 10:22 am

ok, i understand that you don't like how the newcomers, or rookies as you say, are coming in here and stating their opinions. that's what this board is for. but you have to have noticed that whenever the 'rookies' say something the non-rookies will make a rude comment back. it's not just the rookies that are being unpleasant. just a thought...<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes">

debate

Post by Brett11 » Wed Jan 28, 2004 10:43 am
The problem with this board, in my opinion, is too often the hockey debate ends too quickly and the name calling takes over.

I think a lot of this is because you have inexperienced debaters (read: young and inarticulate) who get frustrated. When that happens, they resort to personal attacks, therefore exposing their personal agenda and the reason for making their contribution in the first place. They really aren't interested in the debate.

brett,

you hit the nail on the head. instead of pointing out facts and honest opinions it gets to name calling and bashing etc... this is the reason why i don't post much this year, the bs has doubled since last year...

Amen! I was reading the SSM-AHA thread, and it just completely disintegrated into name calling and put downs, such as "So where are all the AHA fans now?".

I do have to agree with BearCheer to a degree; it isn't always the rookies who spit out the venom.

Name calling has becmoe slightly predominant on the board..but i mean..its still a great message board. there are new posts consistently almost every 5 minutes..24 hours of the day. One thing i have noticed is that it seems like EVERY single thread ends up boiling down to the same old arguements..whether it be A vs AA...transferring vs homegrown....Juniors vs. College...i mean..its like any..and every thread ends up in an arguement about one of those things. i think that people have realized name calling really doesnt do much..on here. Being a rookie is something EVERYONE went through...the only complaint i have is when one tries to discredit your knowledge completely...after having only a few posts "under their belt" its still a good board..lets not keep lookin for things that are wrong

"Pessimists are Optimists with experience" <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Everyone so far has had a great point to certain degrees! The "rookies" state there opinion and when a "vet" doesn't agree....BAM out comes put-down and then the situation gets out of hand.

This is a GREAT message board, a TON of posts....thats what years and word of mouth does for a "site/message board" It's a shame where the conversations got to a point of a lot of swearing and such where now you could possibly be kicked out of here.

HECK, I remember a year ago when you didn't even HAVE to be registered to post on here. It's a shame how some people ruin it for others.

<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ferent.gif ALT=":|">

It's everybody's responsibility to keep it interesting.
You can't let the board happen to you.
You've gotta happen to it!
It helps if you can try to keep it fun. There are many on going relationships that occur on this board that are very good and interesting that also involve a certain amount of 'banter'.
It's only January and there is a lot of high school hockey left.
I personally have enjoyed many posters if not all of the posters that I have had the pleasure to be kicked around with or be kicked around by.
It's just entertainment folks.
Things usually get pretty hot in February in these waters leading up to sections and peak at sections as opposed to peaking at the state tourney.
But when there is too much focus on the state tourney as in all the players want to do is play to win state like that is all they are playing for, you are leaving the vast majority of the teams and fans etc. in the state out of the conversation because. How many teams are out of it
after the first rounds of sections? Then the second, the third and on ' till the end?
I could give a long list of very good posters who are resposible for keeping this board afloat from my three seasons of being a member but most of you already know who they are and there have been many. I'm afraid however, that if I tried I would leave far to many names out. There are just too many.
There's lots more to talk about besides the state tourney
and it is up to you as a poster to keep things interesting.
Besides, it's just hump day and more games are on the way and while we can all find some agreement and appreciation with the author of this thread, it is up to all of us as well as him to create the better threads of the future. I have welcomed many a new poster, young and seasoned, and I continue to do so, but my challenge to you all is to keep it interesting and I have faith that there are many here capable of doing just that.

L<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /alien.gif ALT="0]"> E, SL<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> PSH<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> TER.

(...a legend in his <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> wn mind...)

Ask not what your board can do for you but what you can do..

Post by joe lulic » Wed Jan 28, 2004 1:07 pm

I agree with Slappy's comments.

I also think that the beauty of this board, in addition to the quality of the people, is that there is something for everybody.

Different threads and topics attract different posters. Find a thread that hits your intrerest and then dive in. If the people who are posting are insulting, move on to a different thread.

As I have posted many times, the best way to handle it is to ignore it.

my take

Post by Mitch Hawker » Thu Jan 29, 2004 12:59 pm

Evidently, VERY few people here care enough to report abuse.

I can probably count on one hand the number of e-mails sent to me about specific instances of abuse this season.

Such reports almost invariably result in a deleted post or thread and a warning or an outright ban of a member.

So simple.

<a href="http://pub33.ezboard.com/fmnhsfrm5.show ...

So what is it? The only reasons I can think of are:
a)you're all too lazy
b)you don't care enough about it
c)you would rather read insults all day than send an e-mail that might reveal your real identity to the board admins.
d)all of the above

So, in summary I would say that you all need look no farther than the nearest mirror for someone who is partly to blame for any degeneration of this board.

"Rookies??????"

Post by Tick » Thu Jan 29, 2004 1:28 pm

I am a new opinion giver as you can see by this being my third post. I enjoy reading the trials and tribulations of each pasionate user. Yes you must use the word passionate when describing the users of this forum......Is forum is filled with people who wish the absolute best for the town or the town they support. I happen to live in one of the locations that like to recieve a lot of garbage, but as I have always told my kids......you beat'em by pointing at the score board....it's all opinions who's better than another and it's our duties or jobs to try and shed some different light on teams that may not be seen by the entire state. But the idea of a forum is to express opinions........

One question to those of you who like to pick on us "rookies", is there a direct correlation between the number of posts I have to how much I know or have played hockey in the STATE OF HOCKEY

Easy Mitch....it was just a topic that was thrown out there for people to respond too. Sounds like your a little ticked about it...if it was a real big problem I'm sure you would get and e-mail.

Instead of running to you with the problems, it seems to me that some people on here are just bringing up this topic so everyone can see it.

www.minnesotapuck.com<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">

I'd also choose either option a, or c.

haha using common sense everyone knows that there is not a direct correlation between posts..and knowledge..but hey..its the one thing vet's can hold over ya..<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D"> ..

Mitch came out swingin..but Mitch.realize that it wasnt a knock on you..you are right in saying that people can report it..but some people would complain if they were hung with a new rope..also i think part of the fun is the character associated with each person. anyone who truly feels offended..or do i even say..violated? by this board needs to cancel their plans for the rest of the day and call a shrink immediately.

opinions

Post by atthepoint » Thu Jan 29, 2004 2:05 pm

The average age of the contributors to site has dropped drastically in the last year or so. There are many positives to that, such as inside info and close up views from players. On the other hand, I am guessing that a lot of kid chat lines get pretty personal and abusive and I think some who find this site come here with that background and because someone else takes the bait or responds in kind, they think that is also the form here. I find that a nuisance personally.

I think that most here would agree that the age of a poster and number of posts are irrelevant, but what is relevant is that the comments should be informed and constructive. At least that is what we were used to be around here.

Mitch, I choose
e. "thought someone else - probably the one taking the insults- would notify you"

When a topic degenerates I don't look at it again.

Stir the pot. Pick on or be picked on. Poke, prod or needle. Tease, bash, banter, joke, support or please. It all in good fun.
