One class state tourney system

Post by edinahornets9 » Wed Jan 07, 2004 4:01 am

It's just like the BCS crappolla. Two champions but only one that deserves it. They should just have a 10 round 96 team playoffs to determine the winner regardless of class. Divide it into 12 regions with 8 teams each. The first three rounds would take place at the highest seed. The second three rounds would be played some where like the Decc or other small college arenas. The final four rounds would be played at Mariucci arena and the Xcel energy center. No third place or consolation games. Its win or go home. The tourney would be three weekends starting after Valentines day and ending in March. The season might have to be cut down a few games though. But you still play conference opponents twice just less non conference opponents. What does everyone think?

I think the one class tourney was great and it never needed to be fixed. Back then we had teams like Warroad, I Falls and Roseau compete. Now I really think those teams as well as Breck, Blake, Benilde, Orono and Totino Grace would be competetive each year. Perhaps now, more than ever, it would be a great blend of small and large schools fighting for one title.

Just bring back the Civic Center's clear boards, team music videos and Cooperalls and we'll be all set!

I agree! One tourney, one champion. Class A Champions is alot like a consolation championship in a youth tourney, all you are is the winner of the losers. People in WADENA are talking about going to state! When will the insanity stop? Take some pride in your programs and build them to compete with all, and leave out the argument about numbers. Roseau still plays in AA don't they? Where have all the "Cinderella Teams" gone?

Great Post!

ONE CHAMPION!!!

longlaker..... I couldn't have said better myself, my first tourney was in 79 when I was 4 years old and have not missed one since! I wonder what ever happened to those clear boards? Wouldn't that be a great item to find on ebay and build a small rink in your backyard with those..... This tourney is going to turn into what the basketball tourney has turned into, channel 4 got out at the right time, knowing it was going down hill starting in 92.

agreed.

unless you want to kill HS hockey as we know it, and move to midgets, or the michigan model, then vote with your pocketbook and sponsor a league.

MSHSL isn't in it for the perfection of the single champ... they are in it to promote participation from every school. Any discussion otherwise just heats the air.

-bud

"Feel goodism" and "sharing the wealth" rule the day. If you want an opinion on that from a preofessional contact Luarie Knapp she will kindly school you on the merits of feeling good and everyone getting a trophy. A one class system is for old school Neanderthals much like myself. GEEZ bdabbt I expected better commentary from you on this....guess not.
Petey brother please add to my thunder on this much heralded subject! Give the single class bretheren some love. Glad you brought it up edinahornets9 there is hope for the future after all..carry on the fight son of one class glory. Can I get a hallelujah!

What do you guys care if there is 1 class or 6? What difference does it make?
So long as they dont mess with the real tournament, who cares? We play on Thursday, have semi final night on Friday(the greatest), and the big game Saturday night. It will be a big suburban school or private that wins it and if I dont get tickets, we will watch it on TV with friends and a beverage.

Who cares if Hutchinson plays on Wednesday and either a private or a northern team wins it at 3:00 on Saturady afternoon ? Let em. It doesnt detract from the one we want to watch. Let them have their 2 classes. I doubt the players on the team that wins it will care if some other schools were also in a different tournament.

joe,
Got your gist amigo. But what does stick in my craw is blowhards thinking they are achieving something playing in the littel sisters of the poor tournament. Like Pat Guyer and Bucky Orhn say once every 10 years they will remember you. I respect that, a school like Roseau or Greenway who will take a shot at the real title every once in a while.
I just hope Tomjanovich from Chisholm enjoyed watching his kid play for Hibbing in front of a couple hundred people last season.

JLS 81 , Yeah , I hear ya but my oldest is senior and I guarantee you that when the season (his career) ends, I will wish for just one more game. Sure it is class A and there arent many people there but they are still playin. Thats a lot of what its all about.

joe,
I get on my rant but by no means does my comment "little sisters" of the poor mean to denigrate the A playoff system. I was thinking of teams like Warroad and the high and mighty coach who I have much respect for other than not moving his club up. Anyhoo....bdabbt, slappy, biap, joe, videoscout, petey, bluesbuddy and all posters can hash this out over a cold one. The old man in me wants the return to "Ice Dream" days. But the selfish side of me likes filling my afternoon with Warroad and Fergus Falls, can never get too much puck even with those two clubs smacking heads. Granted I wish it were Warroad and Edina but coach will not pull the trigger up north and chances are it would be Moorhead anyway out of section 8.
Have fun watching your kids grow up and good luck to them.

The fact is that the MSHSL ruined the greatest high school sporting event in the country when they went to the two class/tier tourney. You cannot blame the small schools for wanting to play in "a" tournament, just not "THE" tournament. Our society has taken a huge step backwards with the philosophy that everyone needs a chance to be recognized. That being the case just give all the teams a trophy at the start of the year and go back to one tournament with the winner having theirs taken away.

joe lulic. Have you been to a state tourney in the last 5-10 years? Have you seen how each year there are more and more empty seats? It has been ruined, plain and simple. Last years tournament program for the first time started advertising season tickets for sale through the high school league for the 2004 tourney! That would have never happened had they kept the one class. It's a terrible terrible shame..... ask any tourney veteran.

good point frozensi. There is lack of zest that hangs over the ice surface much like Twins baseball in the dome which tells you something is missing. The luster is just no longer there and things have been a bit cheapened. and Old timers much like myself long for the days of old and it looks like some of the young guns want it back as well.

One Class

Post by EagleHockey » Wed Jan 07, 2004 4:05 pm

This is just my opinion, but...

Wouldnt a one class system these days just promote open enrollment. I mean I would think kids in a town like Hermantown or maybe a place like Princeton (just using these towns as an example) are happy competing in their home towns and having a good chance to play in the class A state tournament... In a one class system it wouldnt suprise me to see some, for example, Hermantown kids transfer to Cloquet or Duluth East, or Princeton kids to a place like Elk River or a Better AA school. Thats just how things are these days, however yes back in the 80's the one class system was awesome!!

When Round-Ballers and Women are in Charge.

Post by rams1981 » Wed Jan 07, 2004 4:05 pm

Obviously most of us old school players and fans and yes good to hear some young ones want something that is never going to happen. Sad to say but look at the people who make up these commitees in the HS League, most of them would pick up a puck and figure it's a ugly paper weight. Most are into orange balls and could care less they hosed up the absolute best HS tourney of any kind, anywhere. And pride being what it is they will swear up and down they made the right decision no matter how long you hold their feet to the fire. Sounds like a certain administrator in big D. I can't recall who said it but it may be a fitting quote "Those who can do....Those who can't teach." Those same educators and administrators made the decision after a liberal "feel-good" legislature mandated it-correct?.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)">

Ruined?

Post by joe lulic » Wed Jan 07, 2004 4:38 pm

Guys, Its been ruined? It is in the best facility in the country. It draws 100,000 people. It is back in dowtown St Paul. Ruined? How?

Ive been to about 25- 30 tournaments over the years and I dont think Ive missed one in the past 5 or 6. Since I was about 10, I have watched parts of every tournamnet on TV. In my opinion it has never been better. I was at semi final night last year and the championship the year before. It was great. What do you guys think has been ruined?

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub33.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUser ... elulic>joe lulic at: 1/7/04 4:58 pm

my 1 cent

Post by longlaker » Wed Jan 07, 2004 4:48 pm

i had the pleasure of being a benefactor of the two tier system and these are my feelings about it. i grew up loving hs hockey in this state. i remember being a little kid watching (at the civic center) the epic battle between 'tonka and jefferson in '84 that lasted 5 ots. i lived for the columbia heights team led by reggie miracle that upset edina in '82 i believe? and who can forget scott bloom and the burnsville squads? as you can tell, i learned about it all during the '80's.

that said, i had a blast in the tier II tourney. i wouldn't want anything to be different actually. it was a thrill for us, our family and our schools.

i think that is all you need to hear really to make a choice about which is better. i miss the single class tourney as much as anyone, and yes it was special, but it's not about us (the lunatic hockey fans) now. it's about the kids playing. that's all, with exception of family and friends they are what matter.

if anything, why not a simple championship game between the two victors of each tourney. that would be my suggestion. just think of how great it would have been to see warroad give anoka a crack at the title last year! i guarantee the x would pack it in for a game with such significance.
