Another SPA player, Tom Gorence... played for the Gophers, the Philadelphia Flyers for a while, and spent a little time with the Oilers. Here's a link:

<a href="http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdis ...

There were quite a team in the 70's. They had a good couple years in '02 and '03 but now they are back down to the bottome feeders. It is tough for a school like them to get good players for hockey. The school is so tough academically and getting admitted into the school is hard. Not to mention the $18, 640 some odd dollars it costs now-a-days.

Wow! That's a huge bill! Great school though... class sizes are all 12 or smaller from what I hear. It's really that much? How much does it cost to go to Hamline or Augsburg? Without room and board I bet it's less expensive than SPA! Oh well, lots of rich hockey parents out there! Not the best hockey situation there right now though I guess... who's the coach now?

The first form of a Zamboni I remember having in my home town, during my high school playing days, was sort of a big barrel filled with water with some pipes leading from it, to a shammy like covered pipes with small holes in them that would deliver the fresh water to the ice but they would only do it before the game and sometimes before the third period!

I don't think it was driven either but dragged instead.

And that was only after things got a little higher tech compared to the late sixties!

Before that, two to four guys from the VFW team or sometimes from what was referred to as the B-TEAM known today as the J V TEAM would sweep off the ice in between periods with wide brooms or shovels!

This was significant because it created a situation to where a team would have 3 different game plans to impliment per game
when playing at home and even a forth when playing in Arena's that had obtained artificial ice in heated arena's, which ours wasn't, just like most of the competitions rinks we played in weren't!

Most games started out much faster in the first period than they did by the third period and that was more due to the ice condition than it was to the conditioning of the team!

When we arrived in Duluth to play in what we thought was the most beautiful arena on the planet, it felt like playing in a sauna compared to what we were used to!

The ice was much slower than it was during our usual third period conditions at home right off the bat!

It was like skating on frozen paint and the ice was white compared to the see through ice that we had at home!

Our home ice was almost like the ice you see on a frozen lake.

We drank a lot more water in Duluth than we did at home on the bench in between shifts let me tell ya!

S<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> S

I remember going to my first hockey game when I was very young - maybe 3 or 4. It was in Fort Frances Ontario and I believe it was the Allen Cup series. But what impressed me were the older men pushing the welded 3 by shovels and removing a parcel of the boards to shovel the snow into the basement. Then pushing the resurfacing barrels (I believe they had three of them). But what rellay impressed me was they were in suit coats with ties and their (Fedora?) hats.
Even the goal judges were all dressed up standing on the back of the nets with their little flags to indicate a goal. But the best part of the game was the Canadian toffee.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... liott70 at: 3/13/05 9:13 pm

what a great thread, brought back lots of old memories.i remember the duluth cathedral teams, the heone's,randolf, trachsel,we played them every year. they always had good teams with highly skilled players.SS ,if you could keep up with randolf's speed you were doing good.I did think he was pretty fast but when he and the national team came to the springs(CC),he had a teammate by the name of danny bolduc, from out east.man that guy could fly.I've skated with and against many, but this guy burnt it up ,like no other.anyway you were talking about the goal judges, standing on the net,I had just moved to town from virginia,7th grade, bantam. carman the butcher was doing his goal judge job as usual, and believe me I didn't try to,but I hit him with a slapper from the blue line, rite in the head.well that was the last time I ever saw a goal judge on the back of net.carman survived ,thank god,but was badly bruised.I shot many, many pucks to develop my slapshot. my mom would by me a 4 by 8 sheet of 3/4" plywood to shoot at,by the end of summer it would be in splinters.LOL,must have drove the neighbors nuts, they never said a thing though.keep this thread going, very interesting reading...
