you are making it a debate, because all GR3343 said is he is currently wearing #98 and that is all. Get it straight Breakout.

Another GR guy coming to the rescue

Keep in mind, I initially asked if 98 was a bit pretentious for a rookie? I didn't want to go deeper than that. Apparently the Grand Rapids contingency wants to take it a step further.

Let's take a look at this, Alex has chosen the highest number on his team. A number higher than the best player in the NHL. Keep in mind, Alex has not even made the team.
You guys can argue it six ways from Sunday. There is ego involved when you go with a number higher than the greatest player in the game. You don't think other NHLr's will take notice of that.

In my opinion, prove yourself first. Ray Bourque, one of the greatest D men of all time played with the # 7 for many years. Later, he changed his # to 77. I am sure Boblee will give me an explanation of why that happened.

Sure, just an average hockey guy that happens to pay $59.95 for a subscription to hockeyfutures.com

Since you seem to be jumping to the defense of your fellow GR compatriot, yes there are a lot of VERY good players that go with lower numbers because they probably feel they don't have to express their egos. Or, they feel a certain loyalty/luck (hockey people seem to be superstitious) to a number that they may have grown up with.

Didn't higher numbers start with the "Great One"? Ya, I know the number 9 turned to 99 deal. Didn't Mario follow suit? Eric Lindros? Sidney Crosby? Plus a lot of wantabees - to your point - average players.

As I have stated, Alex is a very nice player. I hope he becomes the next Phil Housley. My point is one of observation and opinion. It's ok that my opinion differs from yours.
I don't know if Phil Esposito started it but I know he wore 77 for the Rangers in the 70's.

Jim O'brien just doesnt impress me all that much, sure he's a good player but atleast one more year of college would do him alot of good.

I see they made a mistake and listed Goligoski as being from Grand Rapids, Michigan.

I emailed both NHL.com and the Penguins site notifying them of the state error.

Not a GR guy here, but I had an explanation for the Bourque number. He started out at #7, but when Espisito came back to Boston, Bourque gave the number back to him and switched to 77.

Alex was called up by Pittsburgh. Congratulations. Add another name to the Minnesotans in the NHL list.

Penguins Recall Alex Goligoski

There's the official release from the team. Also, Goligoski will be wearing #67 with the big club and is still listed as being from Grand Rapids, Michigan...

The last thing we need is another Phil Housley.

XM Radio had nice things to say about him, hope he gets ice time. :D

XM talked they will dress 7 “D” tonight.
One of the “D” is missing due to Luc Bourdons funeral from the motorcycle accident in Vancouver that created the window..

Alex did not suit on Monday night.

With the injuries the penguins "D" took in game 5 (Orpik & Gonchar) and the one injury in game 4 (Scuderi), we may see Alex in game 6. It'll be too bad if they call him up and don't use him. He has been a force for his AHL team and they are in the Calder Cup. 25 pts in 19 games for Alex in the AHL playoffs.

I think the Calder Cup is Wednesday night also? So he can’t be in two places at one time.

Boblee, which would you, chose?

Help out your AHL team?
Be on the bench at least for the Stanley Cup?

Chicago is up though?

I'd take the chance on getting into a Stanley Cup Final game any day of the week. Hard to believe they called him up just to make him watch. Odds are he'll either dress with the big club on Wed. or be sent back to Wilkes-Barre. Wouldn't suspect he won't play in either.

I was a little surprised to see him not play. Must have been one of the times when the team doesn't tell anyone that a player is injured and they called him up just in case someone couldn't play.

I'd sit on the bench in the Stanley Cup Finals. However, I would rather play in the Calder Cup than sit in the Press Box for the Stanley Cup like they had Alex do on Monday night. Hard to believe he won't play for either team on Wednesday. I expect him on the ice in Pittsburgh.

He was sent back to WB/S for the game tonight. He was called up for Kris Letang attending the funeral of Luc Bourdon.

I hope he tears up the Calder finals

Congratulations to Alex on making the squad to start the year, and congratulations of his first NHL goal. Grand Rapids is proud.
