McBain goes to Buffalo

Post by 52cent » Mon Jul 01, 2013 11:37 am

The Sabres made one trade on a day that featured a blockbuster goaltending deal and drama at the top of the draft. Buffalo acquired defensemen Jamie McBain and a second-round pick from Carolina in exchange for defenseman Andrej Sekera.

McBain, a 25-year old who's played three full seasons for the Hurricanes, fell out of favor in Carolina after reporting to the club out of shape following the lockout. He had one goal and eight points in 40 games after totalling 15 goals and 57 points the previous two years.

"I think Jamie will turn his game around next year," Carolina GM Jim Rutherford said. "Unfortunately, he didn't come to camp last year ready to play. He wasn't in good shape, and because of that he didn't have a good year."

"He got himself into the coach's dog-house, and I really didn't see that he was going to get himself out of it. I wish him well and he's a good guy, but I do feel we've got a more reliable top-four defensemen with the deal we just made."

Who knows. Haven't heard anything at Minnesota Made or First Athlete where he trains :::: yet

But according to the analysis in this article it was not just about being out of shape. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1597 ... e-mistakes

Was a big learning experience for him last season that he'll grow from. The article is a nice piece of education for any defensemen at any age to learn from.

Interesting read. Good luck in Buffalo which is a better hockey town than Carolina.

Maybe he needs to spend some time sucking his thumb at center ice to learn his lesson.

Backhander goal - ouch!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hob8VnOv4TM

This could be a do or die year for the young chap.
Think this is the second year in his 2 year contract so better make it count. He is heavily criticized for his soft play as well as poor decisions. For his sake his time at First Athlete better be more productive this summer and his mental toughness gene needs polishing. And no thumbsucking during his practices is probably is not on the top 10 list of answers.

Diebytheblade.com article in Buffalo:

"...This last season, unfortunately, has been a troubling one for McBain. His average time on ice fell to 18:25 a night, but that was not the worst of it.A few times this past season Jamie McBain found himself in the press box as a healthy extra. For, whatever reason, McBain and Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller never seemed to see eye-to-eye.Muller would prefer for the Canes to be a bigger team that is tougher to play against.McBain, while he is 6’ 2" tall, doesn’t play with all of that height, and would certainly never be considered a physical presence.Jim Rutherford noted yesterday in discussing the trade that McBain showed up to camp in less than stellar shape. This is no way to endear yourself to the relatively new coach Muller, especially when Muller was able to get team captain Eric Staal to buy in to the work ethic that he wanted. This isn’t to say that McBain is a problem in the locker room, more to say he’s still young and could use a bit of maturity.

All of this has put Jamie McBain at a cross-road in his career.McBain still has the ability to quarterback a powerplay and he has a strong accurate shot from the point. That said his play at even strength and on the penalty kill seemed to regress this year. His decision making left a lot to be desired and his lack of physicality saw him get bodied off the puck too frequently in tough areas of the ice thus limiting his ability to get the puck out of the zone.

The question for McBain at this point in his career is what does he want to be?..."

Sabres vs. Islanders: Second period devolves into physical altercations
By Pat Iversen@PatIversen on Mar 15 2014, 9:02p

Seriously, has anyone heard from Jamie McBain?

The season is all but over for both the New York Islanders and Buffalo Sabres, but apparently nobody bothered to tell either team as their game on Saturday devolved into mean physicality.

It all started when Sabres defenseman Henrik Tallinder cross-checked Isles forward Colin McDonald for seemingly no reason whatsoever with less than a minute left in the second period.

It happened so far away from the play that the refs didn't see it and play continued. Eventually, players started noticing that McDonald and Tallinder were having an argument and everyone began to converge at the blueline.

EVERYONE EXCEPT FOR SABRES DEFENSEMEN JAMIE MCBAIN, WHO MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEARED AT THE SIDE OF THIS GIF

All four participants in the shenanigans got sent to the penalty box for the rest of the period.

JSR. Have a look at some of the posts on this site and this latest one and make sure to read the comments at the bottom: http://www.diebytheblade.com/2014/6/6/5 ... mie-mcbain

He has been a free agent since the beginning of this month.

NextGoalWins wrote: McBain has had a lot of games but, if the games I saw this season are any indication of his play, he won't last if he doesn't pick his physical game. Much to shy. Avoids giving and taking hits and mostly gets outworked on the boards.

JSR: Let's see, this is what his fourth season.... he's never been relgated to the AHL in any of the previous two seasons, he just signed an extension with the Hurricanes, he is coming off a season where he lead Hurricane defensemen in points, and he plays on their power play until.... yea he's in real danger of not lasting.... Rolling Eyes

NextGoalWins: Sure but remember he is still just a young prospect with promise - he, like most other young players are still in tryout phase - that's why he got a 2 year deal. The newer Faulk has the spot on the first power play. J has had a good run but is clearly the softest defencemen on the team and has gotten into a lot of trouble because of it this season. That's a problem for a d man. Average NHL career is 4 years. Most of the young players are in danger of not lasting.

Was not liked in Carolina and was shipped to Buffalo and now not liked in Buffalo and without a contract. Think there is any danger now?
