The hit sent Roenick clattering into the boards and resulted in the 11th documented concussion of Roenick's career.

Roenick, who said he expects to play in next week's season opener, called the hit "disrespectful." Kings coach Andy Murray suggested that it was unnecessary.

But, it was the team's resident tough guy and big mouth, Sean Avery, who fired the biggest broadsides of a decidedly one-sided war of words. Avery called Gauthier — one of the toughest players in the league — to task for wearing a visor. He also attacked Quebec-born players as a whole in his rant.

"I think it was a clean hit," Avery told reporters two days after the hit. "I think it was typical of most French guys in our league with a visor on, running around and playing tough and not (backing) anything up.

"I'd think if a guy like Brett Hull was coming up the middle, somebody probably wouldn't have stepped up and hit him, but like I said, a typical move from a guy wearing a visor that certainly doesn't like to get scratched at all."

For the record, Gauthier's hit was clean. Murray and Roenick each reluctantly acknowledged that fact before lambasting Gauthier for disrespecting one of the game's stars. Also, Gauthier is no shrinking violet. Gauthier had 113 penalty minutes last year. He plays a rugged game and isn't shy about answering challenges. In fact, Tom Kostopoulos challenged Gauthier to a fight immediately after the hit and Gauthier did not back down.

But, facts have never been necessary for Avery to form an opinion or voice it to anyone within earshot. This is the same man who suggested during the lockout that the contraction of teams was a good idea, in essence, because it would cost mediocre Europeans their jobs in the NHL.

What is scarier than Avery's irrational diatribe is the notion — shared by respected hockey minds like Roenick and Murray — that Gauthier was somehow in the wrong for pursuing the hit.

''I think it indicates the state of our game, the lack of respect — especially in preseason,'' Roenick said. ''It is uncalled for. It is ridiculous — one of the reasons our game isn't as good as it once was. There is no respect for people in this league. It was not a cheap hit, it was a good solid hit. But you don't do that in preseason.''

Says who?

Gauthier is a third or fourth defenseman on a new team, looking to make an impression. His game revolves around hitting. It is what he does to be successful. He is not a future Hall of Famer who can coast through the preseason, using exhibition games as nothing more than a chance to build up game endurance.

"I'm really sorry he feels that way, but I had no intention of hurting anyone,'' Gauthier told the Arizona Republic. ''It's a physical game. ... This is my first year with a new team, and I'm fighting for a spot in the rotation.

''I respect him more than he knows. If he feels I should let up in the pre-season, I'm not sure I know how to do that.''

Nor should Gauthier try to start to figure it out, regardless of the complaints from the Kings.

mah-self tinks dat dat redneck [roenick] is a cry-baby
