Where will the section 8 tournament be next year? I've heard talk of keeping it at TRF. Great for the home team.

Congratulations to the State Champion Warriors! It may be awhile before section 8A can put another team this deep on the ice. Top contenders will be TRF & Baudette. Hope someone can prove me wrong.

Keeping It In TRF?

Post by Busch League 11 »

There was talk of keeping it in TRF the first season they opened. Thief wanted to take the section tourney from egf the 03-04 season since that is when they opened, and keep it there after that. I can't see Warroad, EGF, and Crookston going for this, or any team for that matter. Why give Theif River home ice every year?

I believe that you will see the AA final rotate between TRF and SCSU on a yearly basis. It was discussed having a semi-final night for both games being held at one of the locations, and then the championship game at the other. Not enough votes to get it going. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">

here is the article in the GF Herald Wednesday.
Posted on Wed, Apr. 13, 2005

HIGH SCHOOL: Groups to look at Section 8A

Move afoot to keep tournament permanently in Thief River Falls

By Kevin Fee

Herald Staff Writer

Athletic directors from Minnesota Section 8A hockey schools will meet today in Mahnomen to discuss the location of the Section 8A boys hockey tournament.

The Section 8A hockey coaches last month voted to permanently move the tournament to Thief River Falls.

It has been on a three-city rotation involving East Grand Forks, Warroad and Thief River Falls. But Detroit Lakes coach Jake Blow made a motion to move the tournament permanently to Thief River Falls at a Section 8A coaches' meeting. The motion passed 5-to-3.

There are 10 hockey schools in the section, but Thief River Falls abstained and Park Rapids was absent.

Blow said there were basically two reasons why he made the motion to move the tournament exclusively to Thief River Falls Ralph Engelstad Arena:

• The city is the most centrally located.

• Reducing a home-ice advantage. He says Warroad has the biggest home-ice advantage because the Warriors play on a larger, Olympic-size ice surface. He says Thief River Falls has the least home-ice advantage because Ralph Engelstad Arena is larger and maybe doesn't get as loud as The Gardens in Warroad or the Civic Center in East Grand Forks.

If the athletic directors vote in favor of the move today, the Region 8A Committee still would have to approve a change. That committee meets Thursday in Brooks, Minn.

'Best rink in the country'

"Things have changed in the section so much that it just makes sense," Blow said, referring to such teams as Detroit Lakes and Park Rapids entering the hockey section in recent years. "It's not a knock against East Side or a knock against Warroad, because I've heard they run great tournaments.

"(Ralph Engelstad Arena) has to be the best high school rink in the country. It's in a league by itself. I've never experienced anything like that. I think it would help everybody - if it was at Thief River Falls permanently - to be a part of the tournament more."

Having the tournament centrally located, Blow said, would cut down on travel time for coaches who want to scout opponents and for fans who want to attend the games.

Satisfied with the rotation

East Grand Forks Senior High and Warroad officials want to keep the rotation going.

"Obviously, I would like to see it continue on a rotation basis," Senior High coach and athletic director Jim Scanlan said. "Obviously, the REA is a very nice facility, and you can't say there's any negative about it.

"But I think both ourselves and Warroad have proven to be good hosts, good sites."

Scanlan said it would be hard to match the crowd excitement when East Grand Forks played host to section finals in 1998 and 2001. In 1998, Senior High defeated Warroad. In 2001, the Green Wave topped Crookston.

"It was just incredible," Scanlan said. "Warroad has had the same thing over the years there."

If another city builds a rink large enough to handle a section tournament, proponents of keeping the rotation say, maybe they could be included in the rotation.

Home openers

Host section tournament sites currently play host to the quarterfinals, semifinals and final. If the rotation stops, there likely would be a push to move the quarterfinals to home sites, so the top four seeds could get first-round home games.

The section consists of East Grand Forks Senior High, Warroad, Red Lake Falls, Kittson Central, Thief River Falls, Park Rapids, Detroit Lakes, Lake of the Woods, Crookston and Bagley-Fosston.

"The ideal situation would be us playing in Moorhead or Bemidji," Blow said of the neutral sites. "That is not feasible with mileage."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fee reports on sports. Reach him at 780-1127, (800) 477-6572 ext. 127 or kfee@gfherald.com.

How can DL's Blow come up with this? DL either doesn't play in the section tournament or is beat out first round. He doesn't even know what it's like playing a section tournament in Warroad or EGF and he's speaking out to keep the tournament in TRF. Experience a section championship game in either of these two rinks and you'll think twice about wanting it in the church like atmosphere of the Ralph.

And yeah, TRFfan, the article says they met yesterday in Brooks to discuss this.

If I were the coach from DL I would probably make a motion to keep the section tournament in TRF permanently because it's a easier trip to make to lose in the first round in TRF rather than driving to Warroad.

If EGF wants to stay in the rotation they are going to have to fix up their rink. Two years ago at the section tournament the sewers were backing up in the place. It is a pit and it needs to be fixed. Warroad has a fine facility but with the olympic ice sheet it does provide them with more of a home ice advantage. Even though I live in Baudette I would much rather play in TRF then in the arm pit of the world Warroad.
