whats the deal

Post by WBLBEARS06 »

is there any reason that Hill has 7 players going to the elite tourny? They have as many as WBL and Cent combined. WBL had 5 and Cent 2. Some of the players that made it from hill are just average players and wouldnt stand out in a crowd... Gabe Guentzel, 4 pts last season. Between WBL and Cent they had 6 players last season with higher numbers then Gabe. Is there a logical explanation for having this many hill players in the elite league?
The curse lives on.....

WLBBears,

The reason Gabe only had 6 (yes 6, I looked) points last year was because he had limited playing time. Hill was working with 7 defenseman for a while and that cut out of lots of his time.

Now, I'm not just saying this because I'm a Hill fan.... but Gabe really is a nice player. Last year his size really hurt him. Since then, I've noticed a good difference in his height, which is great. One of the best qualities of him is how smart he is. He's good at seeing the open ice and makes good passes.

By the way, could anyone copy and paste the rosters on here? If Gabes playing time effected him last season why is he in the elite league. No offense to Gabe but shouldnt some one more deserving go then Gabe. Forget the favorites and be realistic.
The curse lives on.....

Coaches?

Post by shutout »

Who are the coaches this year? With Hartzell and Bell moving on they need at least 2 new coaches. I heard that they hired the former coach of the Tri-City Storm in the USHL, if so the people on that team may want to look into the reasons that he was let go!

for those interested in the way the elite league went this year, it was something like this......... out of the 120+/- Minnesota kids eligible kids playing in this league this year, 90 kids got outright invitations to play............another 110 or or so kid got invitations to compete for the other 20-30 spots.......there were two places for tryouts for those 110 kids, Bemidji and New Hope.......in the elite leagues's wisdom, numerous kid from the twin cities area were sent invitations indicating that if they wanted to try-out they needed to go to Bemidji......heaven forbid if more than one try-out would have been held in the twincities since that is where so many of the players are from but that's a whole different story.................my point is this.....there are some real valid questions being raised about who playing in this league and who's missing..........and for anyone to come back with a condescending response basically saying oh well, didn't make it? life is tough' so live with it, is spewing nothing but a bunch bunch of crap........I can go on, but no real need ......it's becoming pretty clear to many on how this program is being run

Just curious, where are the big missing links here? Who got screwed? Who got a gift? The list looks pretty accurate to me? With the new coaches in the league, i thought the invitation and tryout process was done by some pretty good hockey guys.

Granted, i was surprised by Guentzel and Student, but what else is the problem here?

I am not "in to" bashing who made it, but there are some missing links. I don't know how that can be totally avoided.

But I think what everyone is generally dismayed with is the ever present saga of the power of politics in this system. It bites...period.

If you are one of the lucky ones who plays for the right program, or has someone in the "system" your odds are better that you will make it further in these kinds of scenerios with less effort. Not to say that these kids who are listed aren't putting forth good effort, nor am I saying they aren't skilled and don't belong. But what I do feel very strongly about goes back to the million dollar question for those kids who happen to not be playing in the big name programs....they are required to be 150% better than any other player on the ice....and then if those judging feel it's a tie, the player from the big name program will always get the nod over the kid who comes from a no-name program. Add that to an already political basis, then you have something to complain about. Bottom line: Is there really a solution to getting a more fair selection process, or will then the next batch of people complain?

Hillfan.....do you know anything about hockey? I know that the reason Guentzal got to the elite league is because of his father. No other reason! There are so many other good defenseman out there that should have been there. This league is just another sham! It was suppose to be for mostly seniors and that isnt true anymore either. There is so much politicing going on it isnt funny. The leauge isnt credible anymore.....just a joke. Just like Hartzel trying to keep players in the league for all these years and now hes pulling them away. Come on, see it for what it is, a joke.

Like I said, sure Gabe is a nice player, but maybe he didn't deserve to get in, and yes you're probably right (I'm not the biggest fan of his father, but I'm sure he helps him out). Sometimes the coaches really don't do the best of jobs for picking players either....

I remember back in 2003 before the 2004 season, H-M goalie James Fangel was picked as an alternate on the team. Cameron Voss was in front of him and he just got lit up in the league, posting a GAA of about 4. James got a few games in, but obviously didn't get to be a full time player. He had a great senior year, and he nearly took Hill over the powerhouse Centennial in the section final. I personally thought he was deserving of a spot, but he never got it.

I'm just saying that because sometimes coaches could have their favorites or more well known guys to pick.....

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... gabe will shake off the bad karma and do fine. couple of observations. did playing in the elite II last year guarantee you a spot on elite I this year? if so, did you have to tryout to make a team or just get your walking papers from russo to a team lockerroom? surprised to see will mclain, duluth east, absent...what gives? anyway, it should be some excellent pre-season action to take in.

I know of a player that was in the Elite II as a sophmore and I do not see him on an Elite team roster for this year. I will talk to him tonight and see if he got an invite to a tryout or not. He is one of those kids that doesn't play for a big time program that needs to be 150% better than the well know program players. I think this kid as a junior would be at least second line on ANY team in the state and first line on a large majority of teams.

Proof is in the pudding, right there. I bet you find out he wasn't even invited....and if he was, he didn't make it because the team was already picked. It's tough stuff to go through....but if any of you are players out there reading this, become better inspite of the politics, don't give up because of it.

Elite 2 players were not given extra consideration. "elite" ? league

Post by Ibleedgreen »

year after year the league becomes more of a joke than when it started. the rules are only made to make it appear that there are only deserving kids that get in. when i look at the kids that get in like guentzel, hartzel, and others you can always trace a tie to someone with contacts be it coaches, friends, former teamates, etc. no way is guentzel the caliber of player that belongs in this league........but that can be said for 50% of the rosters. since it's inception this league has portrayed itself to be "elite" when it is just another league for making money and elevating coaches and players whether they are deserving or not. when i look at players that have been passed over for this league for some of these hacks it just makes me laugh .

I was at the tryout in Bemidgi and saw Gabe...did not stand out at all....also at model camp...maybe point. Lets get real, put in capable players with talent! I've been told that this league lost a bunch of sponsers and probably wont be around for to long. Its not the same as it was 2-3 years ago. I agree that 50% of the talent is there, but the rest is politics!

Can someone who is better informed than myself on how these teams are formed explainthe geographical breakdowns? I see where there are 8 Holy Angels kids spread out amongst four teams. In addition, I noticed that there is a player from Lakeville and Grand Rapids on the Northwest team.

We all know there are several elite players out there who are overlooked every year. We all know there are players on this league who are not elite players but are there because of their name or program or whatever. This is not something new. But there are definitely kids on that league who earned their right to be there also.

You haven't heard of any gross injustice because the squeaky wheel gets the attention....those that would be hollering the loudest were likely named to the league.

Elite is a funny term. What is an elitist.. I think it means not a realist....?????

I think this is not very good method to get the best most competitive kids as there is not a way to see who competes in a tough camp that lasts may 4 or 5 sessions. 90 letters and a one day scrimmage tryout is not very effective way to find the young men who are going to compete and train and strive to get better. The training and toughness really shows on the 4th scrimmage of a weekend.

I want to know how the letter getters are found. I have some outstanding young men who are seniors that will only get to participate in a partial season while 4 sophomores are in the elite program. They would be better served to get told what they need to do tomorrow to get to be a competitive player at the junior or College level and not told they are Elite.

I think it is a political joke. I was pleased to see Matt Lipinski and the Carlson boy both make it from our area but to not see Tim Kirby, Nate Dunfee, Jay Gorman (who scored two goals in the championship game at the advanced 17 tourney)
not make it. That bugs me as they had very good seasons with our Elite II Program. I think it is a shame that we can only play 4 seniors after this political process makes some of our best players feel like they are not good enough or shall we say (less than Elite). I believe that they should take it as a challenge and train harder and strive to have better seasons this fall and winter.

I think they should take heart that in our Elite II program we will practice hard and play hard but if I keep 8 seniors they will only get to play half of the games for Elite II. I think the games are fun but the most important work is done in practice.

I think good seniors should get consideration before juniors and sophomores due to the restriction in rosters in the Elite II program.

I also think that we should work together so they know the kids that are training hard and go to the net and get in the corners and win battles. That may be the most important charecteristics in helping teams have success in juniors and college hockey.

It is not about being Elite it is about being Real and figuring out how to keep it simple and play hard and smart.

I am pleased that our area got more than 3 kids this year that is a plus.

That is my sermon for today.

Congratulations to the So MN boys in the Elite program

Matt Lipinski Faribault.
Brandon Bahnemann, Rochester Lourdes
Garrett Grimstad, Rochester Century
Joe Knoepke, Rochester Century
Zach Owens, Rochester Lourdes
Carlson, Farmington
Canzanello, Rochester MN

6 is twice as many as usual.

Hockey Nut in So. I don't think it is possible to have a system in place that would make the critics happy with the elite league. No matter how the teams are chosen, somebody would find fault with something. Whether the critics have a legit beef or whether it is just because they just have an ax to grind, I don't know. Whether the elite league organizers pick the players via observations during the previous high school season or whether they have a handful of tryout sessions, there will always be some people out there that cry foul about some kid getting left out. I am glad I don't have to be a part of a selection process like that. It is basically a no win situation. But at least it is another opportunity for MN kids to play. Even if it isn't all of them.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... >Finn70 at: 7/11/05 12:33 pm
