Sorry slick I must agree with royal on this one. The item he is talking about is a matter of public record because it was discussed in an open meeting with the former coach. It may be sour grapes for all I know but he is telling the truth.

It could not be worked out mostly because it was a reoccurring problem with the former coach. I have been told, that it was a third or fourth alcohol-related offense by him.

So I think it was not that he was a poor coach, he knows his X's and O's very well, but his behavior that sealed his fate. I'm sure that he probably was not real open to working with the district to solve any issues either.

How do you think Eveleth will do in their section next year?

Yes, back to the real topic!

In my opinion, I really think Eveleth will do very well in their section next year for a couple of reasons.

1. Most teams in the section took a huge hit in graduation but Eg really only lost 3 players. Granted, they lose some very good skill but I think that what they lost in skill will be made up by team chemistry being improved.

2. This will be the second year with the new staff in place and the new systems. Towards the end of last year the players seemed to catch on to the new systems and played very well in them, winning the last 5 out of 6 games.

3. Th new staff works twice as hard as the old in developing the players. I spoke with the head coach last week about their plans for the summer and they look great. He has a first class program (the Gophers off-ice program...77 pages worth that he developed with the strength and conditioning coach at the U) set up for training and he has the skating all summer with a tourney in place also. First time Eveleth has skated in the summer as a team in over 10 years.

4. Finally, they have a very good nucleus of kids coming back. Good talent, good work ethic, good attitude, and most important a belief iin what the coach is doing. I spoke to some of their players at one of the select camps and they are excited that their coach is there. That is huge motivational plus for EG.

Red Knight is that true that Johnson got a training program from the U and that the kids are skating all summer long? If that is true that is going to be huge for the Eveleth team...I think that they need something like that to get them in gear again. Like you said they have a great core of returning players. They only lost 3 players and I actually think that this is going to benefit them. The Babich twins just caused a lot of drama that they really didn't need on a team that could have actually went somewhere this year. Johnson has the kids going on the right track and I am glad that he is the coach. I only wish that he would have been the head coach when I was there. Keep up the good work Mr. Johnson

Nice to hear that someone likes what they see over in Eveleth. It looks good from where I stand now its just a matter of how hard the kids want to work. I hope they realize that if they work hard and improve everyday anything is possible for them. Good luck. And thank to IRC and redknight for actually saying something nice about someone on here instead of ripping them.

Eveleth Gilbert next year

I also heard that David Spragg and Jacob Boese are returning next year. It will be a great contribution as Spragg, 4 goals 10 assists in 20 games at Shattuck, and Boese making Mike Randolph's varsity squad.
Eveleth will also have one of the better goaltenders in 7A, in P.J. Gornick. The only question mark will be there defense. they need five solid defensemen to clear traffic and rebounds around the net and make big plays comming up ice.
Coach Johnson should have his system working well this season.

It's nice to hear that the kids who left the program, for whatever reason, are going back to Eveleth. I think they like what they saw there and want to be a part of a positive program. It should be a fun year for the Golden Bears this year and years to come.

I think Boese will be a great contribution this year but Sprague will need a year or two to get to the varsity playing level. He did play for Shattuck but for their Tier II team. But both will be a welcomed addition.

Good luck coach and team next year.

Hard to say. I am familiar with the team but probably not enough to make a prediction like that. This is what I know...from a 11-10-1 team in 2005-2005 they lost three players that will effect the skill level. Of their 10 losses, something like 9 were to teams ranked in the top 10 in the state. Their roster consisted of 15 players last year that were sophs. or lower. Add in Boese (who made the national 15 team) and I think you have great potential with eager youth. I see them having 3 very solid lines next year with six good defensive defensemen. Their defensemen will not score 20 point a piece but they do play solid defense.

In comparison to the other teams in the section they lost the least.

It does look exciting over on the range in Eveleth.

Hopefully EG can hold on to Johnson as their coach for a few years. I know he is committed to the program but the way the school runs over there, I also know he is getting slighted in the teaching department as far as money goes. He has two master's degrees and no raise from the district for some reason. I do now he has been asked to interview at 3 other schools already this year for next season.

Boese transferring

Post by 7AAFAN » Mon May 16, 2005 11:44 am

What would the transfer ruling be on Boese IF he does return from East? I'm a little foggy on the changes the state made to transfer rules a couple of years ago, particularly if there was not a move made by the family. Or did the family move to Duluth? I'd be curious to hear some clarification.
