Sadly I would have to say Hastings... I think this is the worst section in the state next to the southern section. I mean, look at it... B jeffersons section is stacked, as is Centennials section... and then you have Hastings section... they couldnt make it through either of the other two! Thats a sad statement! So, I will just say....

Does it matter????

-The Slinger

2AA

Well to answer the actual question here... I'd have to say Cretin is the favorite on paper. They got better throughout the year last year and were pretty young, and I heard they got a pretty good kid that came over from Park-CG.

Tartan wont be blown out by anyone because of Cary Wood in nets, but they will have by far the biggest decrease in talent of any tournament team last year (including Moorhead). Hastings is still young and last I heard Jared Stewart is on his way to the USHL now that football season is over.

Yes, 2AA, 1AA, and even 4AA are down, but the section champs all provided good games at last years tournament and i'm sure they will all do the same this year.

yes.. cretins team is young...there good players are mostly in the junior class (mcdonagh, hickey, darwitz, scott, hause) but they also have younger underclass men like bohrer and zimmerman..i like there chances of coming out of 2aa.

Well, Be excited about the sections... cause thats all they will give you! I think its a shame that some of the best teams will be sitting at home watching while one of these teams you speak of will be at that big show.. but we all know in Minnesota that is the way it goes!

-The Slinger

u do not have a clue cdh and hastings both will be competitive with anyone. both young teams but good young players coming up and hastings has jerad stewart who is one of the best players in the state, maybe the best so they have a chance with anyone. cdh has the hickey kid coming back and a few others who r very good, will be a solid section.

Good point Puckster.

Every year we hear all about what a shame it will be that other teams sit at home while supposedly inferior teams play at the X.

We heard it about Tartan last year.

Tartan beat ER's favorite team and gave AHA quite a scare. I was at all AHA /Tartan semi final game and the championship game.

I thought Tartan played the soon to be repeat champs tougher than Moorhead.

As Puckster predicted they would, they did the section and their school proud.

CDH will be a least as good a team as Tartan was last year.

I wont disagree... anyone any any given night can win, and thats what makes hockey better than any other sport! I guess my point is that I wish MSHL would compose a better system. But I know that it wont... so we must make the most out of what we have!

-The Slinger

This is way too tough of a question, it will be a very intense section and all three teams will be down to the wire in there games, Cretin only lost 1 player to jrs, and only had a couple seniors, tartan looked pretty young last year at the state tourney, and hastings, from what i hear, is looking solid, will be a good section this year, may be the most competitive other than 5 and 6 AA

Other Teams?

Post by John04 »

The way you guys talk you would think that there are only 3 teams in this section. The funny thing is someone said Tartan looked young at the state tourny, but if you look at their roster most of their scoring graduated. The second question is if Stewart from Hastings is going to stay in school or go to juniors. If he goes that makes Hastings much less of a threat. The only team out of the 3 that I agree with you on is Cretin. They should be very talented. I do however tell you to watch out for Woodbury and Johnson. These teams I do believe will be capable of beating any of the three we talked about earlier. Cottage Grove could have been decent this year, but it is a shame Darwitz decided to transfer to Cretin. I am sure it was for acedemic reasons. (Wink Wink) Como lost Kyle Follmer to the Souix City and I hear his brother Nick might not be far behind so they will struggle. The St Paul Senators continue to get better, but I don't think they should be able to get anything higher then the 7th seed. The last team in the section is Sibley. They are very down. I would be suprised if they do any better then the last seed come section time. It should be interesting to see how this section plays out during the year.

Other Teams?

Post by Chico »

John04 - I agree with you on a couple of the other teams in the section that may be a surprise as in Johnson and Woodbury. Johnson always brings a very determined group to the rink, and this group should be fun to watch this year as many sophomores gained varsity experience last year. Brian Galloway will anchor the D and Fischer hopefully will be up for the challenge in goal. If Soika can control himself, he will also be a big help. The next season however, Johnson may be in trouble, sounds like they will have no A bantam team this year. The Senators (Hawks) do return many solid players from last years team along with goaltending, and hopefully will end up with a 5 or 6 seed with a little luck. They will also be hurting the following season with around 12 to 14 players that will graduate, and really no feeder program. Sibley lost a lot to graduation, and will be in the rebuild mode this season. Park lost Darwitz, but watching him in a few Elite II games I am not sold on his talents yet. He will be challenged by the solid CDH schedule, I think we will have to wait and see how he handles it.

I would put my money on CDH to win the section unless they run into any key injuries along the way. They had some great battles with Roseville two years in a row in the section finals, I think this is their year. The last time they mad it to state was in 1988. Another question with CDH will be goaltending. Sam Kinne graduated and that leaves Ben Hause who had a few minutes last year to probably take on the majority of the load. They should have 3 pretty solid lines to work with and some good battles for role players as well.

It will be fun to watch and see what happens in the middle of February as always.
