Slingers Preseason Forcast
“SLING” shot to the top!

1. White Bear Lake – I think on paper this team is stacked, it will have 12 or 13 returing players from a consolation championship team which won the swans cup last season as well. Two goaltenders playing the Elite I league and doing very well. And David Grun who may be a Mr. Hockey Finalist!
2. AHA – This team has tons of players coming back as well, but how will the balance be? They lose a couple good players, which they can overcome. It seems that they need to worry about the chemistry of those coming back and having to repeat… it’s a tough thing! But they are a team that could do it!
3. Jefferson – This team has a possible shot at winning. They have to learn to play a “team” game, and replace Connely. If the senior class steps up, and goaltending I solid this could be a great first round match up against WBL in the tourney!
4. Hill-Murray – It sounds like Lechner has a good group coming in with typical HM speed at the forward. Depending on Who shows up for camp could depend on where they end up at the end of the year. To me, the downfall of this team will be D and goaltending. If they tie them together, they should breeze through their conference play and be ready for the Section 3AA playoffs.
5. Centennial – Without RJ this team is completely different, and where it ends up only time will tell. Ause (SP?) is going to have to really work these kids. He has a few solid seniors from last year’s section 3AA finalist team back. Will be interesting to see if they can uncork a solid season. I think some will see this as a down year, but I think they will be in the hunt in the end!
6. Moorhead – You cant count these guys out, even if they did lose 13 to 14 kids and their goaltender leaving for greener pastures. I think they will be down… but with no pressure this season, maybe this will be the year they can win the whole ball of wax. Stranger things have happned!
7. Roseau – Unfortunately Moorhead is going to have to play Roseau, and this team is on its upswing. I put them one below Moorhead only because they have to beat the defending 8AA champs to get the spot. I think this is a toss up. According to connections within the Ram camp they are going to have solid D, with great goaltending. If their forwards get comfortable, watch out! Could be the year for the Rams!
8. Cloquet – If I were playing the odds in Vegas and Cloquet was on the board this would be the team that I take. They have about 13/14 returning players from a close loss in the 7AA playoffs to Duluth East last season. Their goaltender is sharp and will return. They play WBL at Cloquet fairly early in the year which will be a good test to see if they are for real! I think this team will represent 7AA in the Finals and has a chance to go far in the playoffs.
9. Duluth East – The hounds are coming back with some key players gone from last season, including their goaltender who played very well for them last season! This team will make a run with a fast pace and hard hitting, but I don’t feel they have enough to make it to the tourney. If they can put it all together maybe they could upset Cloquet, but remember they have to contend with Elk River in that section now as well!
10. Eden Prairie – Long shot here, but it sounds like they have a good nucleus of kids coming back, and really play with the team mentality! They play in a tough conference, and if they can get things going early they may be playing at the excel in the end!

UPDATE:

11. Re: Slingers Preseason Forcast
RBK. apple valley has two d1 defensive players in medvec and fischer. burnsville has a big and fast forward, oslund, who can skate by any defense in the lake and score. and chaska. they are playing a nonconf. game in january with st. charles, and if they win, will catapault them back on the radar screen as a contender. but, with these teams, do they have the all-important "team" balance slinger aludes to with such teams as aha or even eden prairie? i'll take balance and four explosive lines over one line to prevail over the long and injury prone season.

Re: ER/Cloquet
Really nice preview slinger and ER, you'll find out who Cloquet is when the Elks get their antlers handed to them in the sections.

Overconfident
ER, if you think the Elks are going to just run with 7AA you have another thing coming. Twin Cities hockey games are fast paced with lots of offense. North hockey is defensive and hard hitting. They might win the section, I doubt it, but prepare for a physical beating either way.

So, is ER a metro team or a Northern team?

I mean, with all that traffic, I just assumed they were metro.

What do you say ER?

Or are you still stuck in traffic.

Re: ER pire
Empire, the Elks won't be playing Maple Grove and Osseo in the sections this year to get to state. If they have to get by both Cloquet and Duluth East this year, they'll be watching the tournament on TV.

The Elks style of play does fit in well with northern-style hockey as described by Elliott70; however, they'll be facing a team in Cloquet that works as hard as they do.

Re: ER pire
Going along with this theme... I think its going to be a tough road for ER. I just dont see them in the top 10, and I know that section 7AA is going to be very physical with them during the tourney! Doesnt mean it cant be done... I have seen wierder things over the years! But I just dont see ER winning over Cloquet and DE!

-The Slinger

ER pire
Yeah but lets not forget the Sarsland factor. He always has tricks up his sleeve to get the job done. I know. I played against him for three years in the northwest suburban conference and he always manages to pull it out at the last minute. Did u guys see the game against osseo last year to go to state. Osseo was by far a better team than ER but ER managed to pull out a win. Never under estimate Sarsland. He may yell and scream a lot at his kids but he knows what hes doing. Besides ER is the chippiest team in the state, I think, and Sarsland has a great powerplay so watch out.

Re: Slingers Preseason Forcast
Who are all the returning player for White Bear? To pick White Bear over the Stars is, well, interesting. The Stars return almost everyone. They have no less then 12 college players on the team. They have unbelievable talent and depth. They have the best coach in the state. I am not sure anyone really knows just who good AHA is!
