Title 9 sucks!

Post by gr19 » Tue Nov 01, 2005 8:39 pm

For the Grand Rapids hockey fans out there, I made an effort to see if I could get the pep band at the semi-finals this season. Due to budget the band does not go to semi-finals anymore. I offered to get a group together to pay the fees for the band to be at the DECC for a possible semi-final game. However, because of issues with title 9, if I and some others came up with money to foot the bill for travel expenses for the band to go to the hockey game, we would have to pay likewise for the band to go to semi-finals for all other sports, everything has to be equal. What a load of crap!

I agree! I-Falls had the Dirty Dozen for years. They went to a bunch of games.

The Band

Post by JLS 81 » Tue Nov 01, 2005 9:51 pm

Thanks to title 9 many venues around the state do not have the band around to spice up the joint. I know full well that the band members would rather be playing at the IRA than a flippin' girls basketball game or wrestling match. 'PC' gone amuck and we have our fat and happy legislatures to thank for this nonsense. Good post GR19.

The dumbest thing about title 9 is im sure most girl athletes could care less if they have a band playing at there games. I think it should be totally up to each individual school to chose that kind of stuff.

Isn't the girls state hockey tournament at the Xcel energy center now because of Title IX? If so, that is too bad because the atmosphere at Ridder is so much better for girls hockey than the 95% empty X. Can anyone confirm this for me?
AHA 2002 & 2005 State Champions!

According to the mshsl website the girls' tournament is Feb. 23-25, with championship bracket games at the X and consolation games at Ridder, which is just ridiculous. Until the girls' tournament can fill Ridder there is no reason to move to a bigger venue.

That is just a shame. I feel bad for the girls who have to experience that atmosphere at the X when Ridder would be so much better.

Plus, the X is hard to play in when nobody is in the seats. I've practiced there when the stadium was empty, and it is almost impossible to see the puck when it is in the air. It blends in so well with the dark seats and the seamless, extremely clear glass.

This is just very unfortunate for all involved.
AHA 2002 & 2005 State Champions!

If it is that important to you then come up with the money for them to go to all the events.

I think it would be nice to at least have a few horns and a drum at every game. Couldn't a few kids just get together and go to the game?? Or is that against the law too?

To set aside money for all of the teams we would have to come up with around $8,000.00-$10,000.00. Can we get 500 people to donate $20.00? I'm not so sure.

Girls at the X

Post by packerboy » Wed Nov 02, 2005 10:25 am

Title IX didnt have anything to do with the girls going to the X.

Some of the parents filed an action on the issue but it was sumarily dismissed as nonsense.

Fot whatever reason, the MSHSL decide to have the girls go to the X. The X offered it and they accepted.

I went to Ridder to watch the girls and had a great time. Not goin to the X to watch them.

I am not about to sit in a 18,000 seat arena with 2,000 people in it. Stupid. Really stupid.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ckerboy at: 11/2/05 10:29 am

Agree.... But!

Post by gunslinger » Wed Nov 02, 2005 11:38 am

Listen, I agree, I think having the girls play at the x is about like having the soccer teams play at the metrodome! doesnt make much sense to me! But... If its offered up, and the price is right... what does it matter... I agree the environment is stale... but so too is the metrodome for soccer, yet who complains about that? Maybe its not apples to apples I dont know...

Personally I think they should still play at the fairgrounds! Ah but what do I know.... Im just an old man!

-The Slinger

I have attended the Scwan's dup the last couple of years and the draw is not great. The play seems slower that n normal. I bet the girls tournament will draw less and it will seem worse. I was at Ridder last year for the girls tournament and thought it was great. The building was filled and loud. The way it should be. Let's go back....
As far as the band situation. I have a daughter in the Richfield band and this year they will be playing at 3 boys and 2 girls games this year. This was added because the school felt their pressence is good for the team.
________________________________
Academy of Holy Angels
2005 GIRLS STATE CHAMPS!
2002 & 2005 BOYS STATE CHAMPS!!
GO STARS!!

Zamman, I believe the point was that the schools, because of budget constraints, can't send pep bands to games beyond the regular season....I think the playoffs is what original poster was upset about. The pep band at our local high school rotates the sporting events at which they play, too. I believe that is common practice now.

Title 9

Post by diskman » Wed Nov 02, 2005 2:00 pm

My kid (son) played at the Xcel for the holiday tournament a few years ago. He was thrilled to be playing there but I didn't really like it. It was empty! I'd rather have it at Aldrich or some arena that is filled. Just me. I don't think it's a boy/girl thing. The state tournament is another thing. The boys bring in plenty for that.

The GRHS band plays at only 2 games for each sport. 9 home hockey games with no atmosphere. One person mentioned the kids just getting together to go to the event, well, that is against the law.

Title 9 would work if they took Football out of the equation. A Football team rosters 80 - 100 players and you have to have 6-7 girls sports just to equal that sport alone.

I thought it was ridiculous to find out that the boys could not use the replay screen on the scoreboard at the X because they did not have one at Ridder for the girls. The girls sure don't mind spending the money generated from the boys tournament. ( just like marriage)

Yeah, no replays was a joke. But...a bigger joke was that we couldnt have the tv's on in the locker rooms...
2A

They don't use replay on the big screen at the Prep Bowl either, so it probably has more to do with the MSHSL than title IX.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I want to say two or three years ago there was replay at the X, atleast up until that law suit was brought up by the girls from Blake. So I don't think football has much to do with the use of replays, I think it was the MSHSL trying to even things out a little more between the boys and girls.

I could be wrong on this but a High School rule is no replays can be used by a team at any intermission. Maybe this is what plays into to it. The rule really pertains to the teams taking tapes into locker rooms and watching the first half to make adjustments. But Knowing the MSHL they might consider this as a posible violation of the rule. Are replays used in any state tournament? Basketball, Football, Volleyball, etc...

This thread fits right up there with the public vs private thread, the recruiting thread, and the open enrollment thread. There are relevant points to all sides, but like open enrollment , title iv was legislated and is now the law of the land. It is easy to say title iv is unfair, but it has given many an oppurtunity. Some things seem to be unfair, but hey that's life.
