Washburn Hockey, This is the year

Post by MplsHockNut »

Ok, maybe a little misleading title. I admit, Washburn hasn't been good in recent years, hell, no city team has done jack in a long time. But I have a feeling the Millers are gonna do alright this year. Granted, they won only two games last year, I think they will be the Minneapolis Conference Champ, (if there really is one) and be the best city team around. I also feel a little better about their chances in the section. I think come late February and dare I say early March, these boys might be still playing. They lose only one player to my knowledge, the lone senior and leading scorer Christensen. I think they have at least an outside chance of upsetting one of the top seeds and making a strong case for a crosstown trip to the Xcel. But I don't know a ton about the section. (Any info from the boards would be greatly appreciated) Heh, maybe it's just an old guy's hope to see his beloved team win. But wouldn't it be nice to hear, "And the champions of Section 3A, the Washburn Millers!" over the Xcel's P.A?

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... Not a Chance

Post by John04 »

Washburn does not have a chance to knock anybody off. I'm a St Paul City guy and have watched our teams beat up on all the Minneapolis schools for the past few seasons. Thank god we only have to play them once this year. Washburn has a terrible program. Their coach is quite a piece of work. Last year their team made it to the JV city championship game. They played their whole varsity roster and still only beat Johnson's JV 7-5. I see a last seed in their future come section time. I do love the fact that people are still loyal to their programs, but reality is they are not very good.

Washburn

Post by MNPuckster27 »

As a guy who would love to see the St. Paul Johnson's, South St. Paul's, and Mpls. Southwest's of the area rise back to power I would have to say that Washburn has about 10,000-1 odds of making the tournament.

In fact, if they make it past the play in game (game before the quarterfinals) in 3A I will not post on this board for one year, you have my word.

I would love to see Southwest in the tourny. My nephew is playing there, and it would be nice to see a MPLS school there again.
________________________________
Academy of Holy Angels
2005 GIRLS STATE CHAMPS!
2002 & 2005 BOYS STATE CHAMPS!!
GO STARS!!

How is SW lookin this yea? I would also love to see those MPLS teams start to turn it around but I dont see anyway SW can turn it around with the section they are in. I think they will win their conference but even that is depleting, losing teams each year. What do you guys think of thier new coach and how the team is lookin?

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ockey55 at: 11/2/05 3:36 pm

Ummm... Yea

Post by MplsHockNut »

Ummm.. yea State, I've already covered who I am. I am a middle aged man who sent his kids to Washburn. And I wouldn't accuse a Washburn player of coming on here to toot their own horn. They know damn well they don't have anything to brag about lately. And I think its kind of sad that whenever someone posts something optimistic about the next season that people like you think you're so funny when you come on here and think so little of a determined group of Washburn kids. I would love to know who you think is good, i mean it would give a little more maturity and legitamancy to your sad excuse for an opinion.

Sorry to come off as an to everyone in the boards. Just kids like this make me so angry. I would still love to know people's opinons about Washburn's new section, if anyone has a RESPECTFUL and USEFUL, opinion I would love to hear it! Yeah...

Post by topshelf11 »

I'm sorry MplsHockNut, but there is absolutely no way Washburn could make it out of 3A for a long time. First off, Washburn has no goalie or defense. They have no goal scorers with exception of Ransom. They don't pass the puck. They take cheap penalties and they don't have any big guys. The two games they won last year... North Branch and Mpls. South. The Washburn Bantam A team probably would have beaten them. Also, look at whose in 3A (Lourdes, STA, Richfield). Lourdes is always good. STA has one of the fastest growing programs in the state. Soon they will be BSM AHA Hill caliber. Richfield who gets many of Washburn's players due to open enrollment. I just don't see it happening.

Topshelf, yea just a little wishful thinking on my part I guess. I know Lourdes is good, Richfield I of course know about seeing as how they are on my side of the river. But do you really think STA will be AHA, BSM quality soon?? I see plenty of Red Knights games, and if STA is that good, and Lourdes lives up to billing, i guess Washburn might have some trouble. Heh, I can hope.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... HockNut at: 11/2/05 8:47 pm

3A

Post by hattrick91 »

There are some tough teams in 3A- St. Thomas Academy, Lourdes, Red Wing, Lakeville North and Richfield are in that section. One of the difficulties Washburn has is that they play a really weak schedule during the season which does not set them up for post-season play. Anything is possible though- Washburn should have more wins if they only graduated one senior last year but state or even a decent showing in 3A playoffs is not likely.

slight correction...it's Lakeville south that's in 3A, not north

OK thanks I wont stay silent for a year if they make the quarterfinals. As an old city fan like yourself I'd also enjoy seeing city teams represented better than they have recently. However I don't see any city teams doing well any time soon. It has to start in the youth programs and those are falling apart in both Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Good Luck to Washburn though, maybe I will see them in a play in game against South St. Paul come playoff time.

Does Washburn have their own youth program? If so, do they lose kids to private schools or do they just not have the numbers and the coaching anymore?

Washburn's Youth Program

Post by topshelf11 »

I played for Washburn last year and looking at my Bantam "A" team picture here's where all of the 11 players went:

1- Benidle
2- Mpls. South
1- St. Anthony
3- Holy Angels
1- St. Louis Park
1- St. Thomas Academy
1- St. Paul Academy
1- Mpls. Washburn

The youth program doesn't have the numbers. The kids in the booster program aren't going to Washburn. The one kid on the team who went to Washburn probably is not going to play this year. I do not know why Washburn has so much trouble getting kids.
