From the games I have watched personally and on t.v I would have to say I was very impressed with Cary Woods and Zach Faust. They both are terrific goalies and should lead there teams back to state. I also liked Austin Lee but I heard he was very inconcistent. When Jefferson played Moorhead last year at Moorhead he was the only reason that it was 3-1 instead of 6 or 7-1 but then againist Holy Angels in state I felt he let in 2 soft goals from about the bllue line so if he gets more consictent he can only get better

Spudmania - I agree with you about Lee's inconsistency. I watched him in the Elite league - he had some good games and others where he let in several soft goals. He did not make either Elite National team that is selected by the coaches. He is big and covers a lot of the net but doesn't move quickly side to side.

Spudmania/hockeyfanmn:

Yes, Faust is a solid tender and should lead WBL to the Xcel for his senior year. He posted a Save % in EL1 of .884 (a three way tie for 6th) with a GAA of 3.93 (5th). He and Cary Woods were paired together on the NE team. Furthermore, he posted a save % of .905 (5th) and a GAA of 1.00 (tied for 2nd) in Model Camp.

Wood may also lead his team to the Xcel in 2006 as he did in 2005, however he did not perform as well in the EL1 as he did in the 2005 State tymt. He posted a save % of .884 (a three way tie for 6th), with a 5.19 GAA (11th). Furthermore, he posted a save % of .895 (7th) and a GAA of 2.20 (9th) in Model Camp.

Lee on the other hand posted a Save % with a .899 (4th) and posted a 3.98 GAA (6th) in the EL1. Lee, according to Elliott, sustained an injury during the EL1 season and Elliot made it sound as if that is may be why he did not move on into either of the EL1 two final teams. In Model Camp Lee posted a save % of .910 (4th) and a GAA of 1.00 (a two way tie for 2nd). I have witnessed Lee performing in the EL1 and Model Camp and a major majority of the time he came up big.

Regards,
mnhockey39

Lee is a very good, solid netminder. I also heard he sustained a wound infection during the Elite I season making him unable to play in the national tournament at the end. Seeing as Lee has committed to a DI school, been drafted by the Omaha Lancers, and is on the NHL Central Scouting list (he and Kangas are the only 2 Minnesota goalies to be on it), and from seeing him play I would say that he will be a major force.

mnhockey22:

How can you or anyone else put Ellingson into the top 5 tenders in the State? In EL1 he posted a save % of .882 (9th) and 4.11 GAA (7th) and in the U17s he posted a save % of .878 and a 4.33 GAA? I am not denying that he certainly has many bright spots in his young career, however stats do tell a storyline.

Hype belongs to KP as you duley noted. Example, Patterson posted a save % of .919 and a 1.99 GAA in U17s. Patterson is the 1st Minnesota tender to post above a save % of .900 or above in several years in 15s, 16s, and or 17s. His performance in EL1 solidifies this for me and he is only going to get better as he is only a sophomore!

Many have discussed juniors Wood and Ellingson, however they leave out Guggenburger (and others) who played well in the EL1, Model Camp, and delivered well for BSM as a sophomore?

My intentions are not to disrespect any of the tenders, however deliver the facts instead of hype.

Regards,
mnhockey39

Stats are great for those who love stats. But when the game is on the line who's going to make the big saves? You can interpret all the stats you want but I'll take the "Money" goalie on my team any day!!!!! And there are a few goalies in everyone's top ten with great stats, but they have not made the big save when the game is on the line.

ellingson

obviously you didn't catch many of the elite 1's games in which ellingson played. He played amazing especially at the end of the year that many times doesn't show up in stats.

The same can be said for the goalies who make the "big" saves but then allow soft goals. I think a very strong factor in the success of the 'best' is consistency.

war hock, huh? What do you mean the final games don't show up in the stats? Where did you come by that kind of information....and why would final games not be included? Clarify for us, please.

when mentioning good goalies from the southern part of the state, you need to include Olson from East.
He received the 2nd most votes from the coaches for all big-9 goalie. The only kid with more votes than him was Kangas from
Century. Pretty good company.

Exactly what I'm talking about. Guy has great, stats and consistently makes save after save, but can't and I mean can't make "the" save when the game is on the line. Saw it game after game last year. Goalie averages in the mid nineties in save % and then let's soft goals in with under 2 minutes left in the game. Blame it on the other 5 guys on the ice at the time, but when the pressure is on the guy folds. Saw it the last two years in at least 30 games and he's always listed as one of the best. I don't get it! But then, I never played goalie and never was under that kind of pressure. Just saying from my point of view, give me the guy who wins games and you can have all the other stats.

Ok warhock, I will agree with you on that one...that stats aren't the total measuring stick for netminders. I have said that before.

Unfortunately that's what many choose to go by because they don't have a grasp for the position. Those same people find wins and losses a way to determine if their goalie is below average, average or the best they have ever seen. Too bad, isn't it? Sometimes goalies with the best skill and knowledge of the position are with some of the worst teams in terms of W-L.

war hock:

Not once, have I mentioned that stats are the absolute tell tale. There are several other factors such as TEAM quality, quality of shots that a netminder has to stop, and a means number of SOG throughout a season(s)! However, several seasons with a high save % (above .900) tell a lot about a tender! My analysis comes from the above including rebound control and recovery save transitioning.

This thread has had much discussions about RE and based upon what I have witnessed, seeing him play too date, my comment is he still needs to prove himself in order to make the Top 5 tenders in the State. Based upon his age, mentality, and his progression to date, this young man should continue to improve in order to rightfully belong in the Top 5.

By the way, yes I have seen Mr. Ellingson perform, last year and this year, including the EL1 program.

Respectfully,
mnhockey39

98irish:

As you identify the $$ goalie, the analogy applies to several other athletic and non-athletic individuals. Performance under pressure translates into real and perceived success! No argument here. However, statistical analysis measuring success in longevity, demonstrates better odds of long-term real success.

Regards,
mnhockey39

what about schwartz he is only a sophmore this year but as a freshman he won all-conference in the North Suburban Conf. and he also won the team MVP. He went to the national camp for the 15's and he is looking to lead one of the most talented teams St. Francis has had. He lead the team to a 10-14-2 record last year after just 3 years ao they only won 1 game(when he was in 7th grade) he going to be a guy to watch this year, He's had some big games like stoppin 68 of 73 shots against Grace last year and 57 out of 60 to tie Buffalo 3-3, Look for this kid to be very solid for st. francis this year!
