Kevin Donohue of Rochester Mayo has played very well for Section 1A/1AA this fall. I hope he has a great year for the Spartans.
Hockey Nut in So. MN

What were the numbers on the Scheib's kid on Team Wisconsin. I think he is a heck of a goalie.
Hockey Nut in So. MN

ER...to answer your question, a simple no. Look at the stats reported in Elite I. Also, the stats from the trip this summer, I believe Patterson had better stats than Reid during that time frame also. I have seen Ellingson play. Good goalie, but not the best I have ever seen in his age group. Now before all the Cloquet fans get in a rumble, I mean no disrespect, just my opinion based upon what I have seen. Your ER goalie will do just fine when your team plays against CEC.

Patterson is a sophmore.

Sophmores do not play in the national event. Their outstanding performance is awarded with an alternate award.

Scouts see the stats and the fact they are alternates so they know the coaches have an appreciation for their ability.

Nationals is about seniors, and some juniors.

This is explained to the players and their parents.

Additionally, stats do not tell the whole story.

Goalie #1 plays agianst #1 team 3 times.
Goalie #2 playes against #7 team 3 times.
Goalie #2 has better stats but that is not the end of the story.

But I do agree that Patterson is very, very good.

Very good points, Elliot.

And indeed, Kent Patterson is an excellent goalie, who is fun to watch and gets the job done without a bunch of "me, me, me" hoopla. A young goalie that I hope continues to do well.

Another question...who is going on to the nationals from Elite 1 for goaltenders? Or is that posted now?

hockeywild1331, thanks for the info.

Also, it isn't my style to put names out there when I am commenting on a less than positive note. But I can tell you that the "me" syndrome I am speaking of isn't evident to onlookers or fans, but rather to the athletes and coaches who deal with him or other goalies like him. That's all I will say.

You might see Hartzell in the net more than you think. As good as Faust is, he has a history of letting in easy ones especially in big games. I watched Him at team NE. first playoff game and he looked terrible. With his size, He just doesn't fill up enough net.

Ellingson not even best in section 7

Post by Duluthhockeyfan » Thu Nov 03, 2005 7:49 am

I know this will get people going, but in my opinion Ellingson is not even the best goalie in Section 7.

I personally feel the best goalie in Section 7 is Ben Leis. Now I'm sure you can all throw stat after stat at me, and that "he didn't even make the MWEL team" but I think when this upcoming season concludes, one of the states top goalies will be Ben Leis. He was forced to play behind a senior last season who had a very good year. But Leis is a proven winner, he is a PeeWee State Champ. He led his team back to the State Championship game as a Bantam, and he is a hard working stud. I think with his opportunity to play this year everyone will see that Ben Leis will prove he is the best in Section 7 and one of the best in the state.

Size is something that can be outplayed by skill. The day of the big goalie preference has been diminishing, as it should, IF the big goalie doesn't have the skill to back up the size.

Look at Division 1 this year...some very good goaltenders under 6'. And they are fun to watch. Look at the Ducks goalie at the NHL level...he is huge, and is a very good positional goalie, but he has struggled out of the gate a little this year because of the new rules ...he can't move as well as some and movement has become even more critical.

I could give a crap about size if the skill isn't there. Give me a 5'10" goalie with skill, vision of the ice, ability to read the play and strong movement over a 6'2" cover up the net guy.

And Duluthhockeyfan, there are many goalies who have been or will be overshadowed by their senior counterpart or loud praises going to other goalies in the state. I am with you....let the season begin and let's see some goalies out there who will be getting their chance this year to prove they deserve consideration as some of the top in the state. Good luck to every goalie out there this year.

duluthhockeyfan,

Why isn't Ben Leis on Elite 1? Why didn't he make the national tryouts? Maybe he WILL be good this coming season, but as of right now, in my mind, Ellingson is much better.

I think that Ellingson is a great example of how size doesn't always matter that much. He's 5'10 and not huge, but he's great in the net. And i'm betting that he'll be much better than last year with all the work he's done this summer.

hockeywild1331, you just lost everybody on this when you made comments like why didn't your goalie make this or that? MINE did so therefore he is better.

Duluthhockeyfan made some good points about waiting out the season a little bit to see how everybody does...are your Section 7 people maybe tired of hearing from CEC that Ellingson is the only one who can play net? He does have more experience and has been given more opportunity, but does that make him the best before the season even starts? Not in the eyes of your competitors...
