Re: where does the money go?

puckster10, Very good question and one that isnt asked a lot. The profit from the state tournamant is $1,000,000.

Where does it go? To finance other activities of the MSHSL. Salaries, the tennis tournament, good stuff like that. Not a nickle goes back into hockey.

Think about it. The thousands of dollars people spend on their kids hockey. The thousands of volunteer hours of the coaches and directors. What is done at the tournamanet to even acknowledge the contribution of youth hockey? No recognition, no nothin.

Could they send us a bag of pucks?

So, when I go on my little rampages about taking the sport back to the community at this level, this is one big reason why.

I mean, I wrote out a check for $275 for my son to play this year. Now, thats a bargain and obviously the school is subsidising it too but can't they even kick back some of this to their own members?

I think its scandlous but no one agrees with me so......

Do you think that college crew makes any money? How about baseball? No. Football pays for everything. That's the way it is...and always will be. Better get used to it.

The Football and Basketball tournaments make a nice profit too so bschultz makes a point but football doesnt pay for everything. Hockey does real well and so does basketball.

Terrible Coverage - Money

Post by SectionFan »

Maybe some of the profits/proceeds go to make the music videos that were so proudly played during the intermission between games !! What a wonderful time to show highlights of past years or some other special interest topic related to hockey.......... nope......we get music videos...... ya gotta wonder.

In a dream world they'd bring in Gary Thorne and Bill Clement to do the tourney on WCCO.

I like Anthony LaPanta well enough, but Kevin Gorg drives me nuts. If I hear "Back on their heels" one more time I'll scream.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/sick.gif ALT=":x">

These technical issues need to be addressed, RIGHT F'N NOW.

There's a great game on, featuring a performance by Alex Stalock that could go down as the greatest performance in tourney history, and we can't see half of it because of their techincal problems.

This is asanine.
Scheids
(A legend in his girlfriend's mind.)

Victory "Stealth" Sports

Careful, KMSP might read these posts and sell the rights to Victory Sports and we'll have to drive to a bar in Windom to watch the games, with the other 500 people in MN that get that channel.

Channel 9 is horrible!! Wally Shaver should be fired.

Well if its any consolation I read in the Star Tribune today that this is the last year of KMSP's contract for the high school hockey tournament.

Hopefully WCCO or Kare 11 will put in a bid for the tourney.

Oh, and during one of the night games last night KMSP had some graphic about the keys to the game and they spelled experience - expierence. Thought that was kind of funny. KMSP can't even afford a spell checker.

If you're right about it being KMSP's last year, I believe we will all shout a collective, WOOHOO! So they had technical difficulties during the Breck/SSP game? That's very sad because the fans missed one heck of a game.
Puckster

www.wildpuck.com

Even if this is KMSP's last year, I highly doubt any of the big 3 networks will pick it up next year. The MSHSL offers the tournaments as a package and there's no way WCCO is going to show girls basketball over CSI or KARE over ER. If the tourney's were broken up then I'm sure one of them would pick it up, so it's up to the MSHSL if they decide to offer them a la carte.

The only thing I could think of is (if the MSHSL would allow it) maybe KSTP could get the rights and show the lesser tournaments on their sister station channel 45 and show the hockey (and maybe football?) on channel 5.

You guys all make good points but from a guy who has watched about 40 of these things on TV, I have a little different perspective.

The fact that the coverage is a little corny, maybe even inept at times is part of its charm.

If you guys dont like Lou Nanne now, you should have seen him 35 years ago when he first started. To me, hearing his voice means its tournament time. He could screw up just about anything and it wouldnt matter to me.

Its kind of like when they give you a filet at Mancinis when you orderd a sirloin in between games.....who cares you're at Mancinis in between games.

I remember about 20 years ago when the local ABC affiliate (KSTP?)brought in Howard Cosell for the tournament. It was slick and polished and had Bob Bruce and it was.....not the tournament.

I like old Louie and some guy who forgets the names and technical problems.

What I don't get is, Channel 9 does the Wild games....

can't they use the same people and equipment? Or are the wild games just as poorly done, but I just don't notice cuz I don't watch them enough.

I think the Wild games are done fairly poorly by 9. FSN does an ok job, but even then it could have been better. They have different people for the Wild, but the camera's should all be the same. In an ideal world, I'd like to see what another channel, like 4, could do with a Wild game. Of course I have to realise that if they changed everything to please me, someone else would gripe about something. In fact I am grateful to 9 for covering so many Wild games, otherwise we wouldn't get a chance to see them all.
Puckster

www.wildpuck.com

Coverage

Post by Pucknutz69 »

I agree hearing Sweet Lou just means Tourney Time, he adds a Hometown feel. The guy I think is out of line is Housley, talk about lost for words. He didn't even remember Sagisors name, the guy sitting 2 feet away. Great hockey players don't equal great announcers. Guys who know what this means to the kids playing and put something extra into it. You pay some high priced cover guy you would get a pretty bland cover.

How many of you call-in sick to school or work to watch?

I like Lou Nanne, he's a big-time part of Minnesota hockey and having him there helps keep the tournament in the big time. Plus I like most of his observations.

Anyway regarding TV lets hope the worst scenario doesn't happen and that is Victory. They do a fair job on their games of the week but they could bid on it and get it and hold everybody hostage because our major cable providers won't knuckle under.

Victory

Post by speedfire »

Sid's column today in the Strib said that Carl Pohlad was looking into buying Channel 23 and then just put Victory there, not sure if that would mean we would have a broadcast sports channel or not. Hockey season ends soon, got to be able to watch some baseball while waiting for winter to come around again.

WCCO puts more about the tournament during the 5 o'clock news than Ch. 9 puts in all game.

Don't worry about Victory. Unless something changes, you can bet that one of the major players will sign on with them before baseball season's a week old. Once they do, look for the others to fall in place. IF Dish has twins games and Time warner doesn't, TW will lose tons of subscribers, and vice versa.

I agree with Sweet Lou. Good announcer and tells it like it is. Wally is only there because of his amazing father Al. Boy, could Al Shaver call a hockey game. Any of you remember Al calling the North Stars games? What a talent.

BRINGING IN DAVE SPEHAR WAS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR. HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT. JOE BIANCHI SEEMS A LITTLE NERVOUS,BUT WITH TIME MIGHT BE OK. NOW IF WE CAN GET DIFFERENT PLAY/PLAY GUYS THE BROADCASTS WOULD BE OK. AND WHEN DID MOORHEAD MOVE TO THE NORTH???? THEIRS ONLY TWO TEAMS FROM THE NORTH, HIBBING AND WARROAD.

Spehar

Post by 4checker »

Agree on the Spehar sighting - always brings back memories of his incredible tourney accomplishments. Still remember him heel-kicking the puck up to his stick on his penalty shot like it was an end-of-practice shootout. Wonder how his style of play would be affected these days by the clutch-and-grab being allowed this year.
They really seemed to be playing up the "Battle of the Northern Teams" angle, didn't they? Guess for some, everything north of Hwy. 94 qualifies.

Here's my .02...

Lou Nanne is a fixture. Sometime he's annoying, sometime he's biased and other times he's dead on. Given all that, it would be way weird to not have him in the booth; when he gets on my nerves, that's what the mute button is for.

As for Wally, I'd rather have Anthony LaPanta doing the primary play-by-play. I just don't care for Wally's style.

My main beef (mentioned elsewhere in this board) is KMSP in general. Their camera work is questionable at best; they have way too many "technical difficulties", and frankly, speaking of nostalgia and tradition, they do virtually nothing with that. The "Facts" thing they've had on is a start, but only that. Isn't this the 35th anniversary of the 1969 Edina-Warroad title game, one of the greates games in Tourney history? Has it even been mentioned? Jeez, take 7-10 between periods and relive it. Show some highlights and interviews.

That's the kind of thing you do with tradition.

Think you're right on with those comments. Who doesn't get chills when they (rarely) show the old stuff? Even Housley in the Cooperalls was great to see again. Do some work, research a little, gather some tape. The old-time pictures on some of the commercials are more interesting than any feature they've done so far. It's nice to see the familiar players, but securing appearances by Spehar and Bianchi and Housley, etc. wasn't all that was needed to be done to cover it properly.
LaPanta is a professional, Wally is a cartoon character most of the time. Did the Shaver family live near the Arctic Circle while Wally was growing up? The big emphasis on aGAIN and eh? drives me crazy. You're right, Nanne deserves respect and should be tolerated, I guess.

Wally Shaver, eh?

Post by scheids316 »

The funny thing is, Wally wasn't even born or raised in Canada. From what I've heard, his parents are Canadian, but he's lived in Minnesota for most of his life.

Another interesting note...Did anyone else catch Lou Nanne's pot shot towards LaPanta when they came back from commercial during one of the games?

They came back to the game a little early I think, and Lou, not aware he was on air said something about LaPanta's face looking like it was "elongated." Funny stuff.
