Where is he now? Spehar Edition

Post by EREmpireStrikesBack »

I saw him on the pregame before the AA Championship game. He looked a little chubby. I was just wondering if anyone knew what he has been doing since his short # of days with the Gophers?
Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

"Short # of days with the Gophs"

Come on. He didn't have an unbelievable career but he was a four year letterwinner and played quite a bit. Pretty sure he lives and works in the cities.

He was unbelievable in high school that's for sure. Knack for scoring that you really don't see all that often.

Spehar only played at one end of the rink when he was in high school. Yeah, how much did you see him in the corner of his defensive end. How much did he play for Lucia when he took over at the U? Nice job Wooger!

I was at the game when he scored his first college goal against North Dakota at the U. Yes, we went nuts because we thought it was the beginning of a great career. We were all holding our breath to see this offensive wonder produce at the college level. Good thing we didn't have to hold to our word. We'd all be blue in the face or dead.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub33.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUser ... onblock at: 3/15/04 12:17 am

man why u gotta dog him like that. he had an incredable high school carrer and everyone knows he struggled in college. i don't think many people expected him to do that great simply b/c of his size and his style of play. after that performance in the state tournament woog had to take him on the goph's. there is no reason to take shots at him, he is a nice guy and a HIGH SCHOOL hockey legend.

Just telling it like it is. Why don't we discuss the players who were great but only played in the defensive end of the rink? I'm not hearing or seeing many names here.

Spehar shoots he scores!!!

Same post exactly one year ago.
I have to say if Blake Wheeler or any other high school kid scored as much as him in the state tournament, wouldn't you be hoping the Gophers got him? Hind sight is always 20-20.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub33.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUser ... upucker at: 3/15/04 1:29 am

Hey most people are more chubby when they get older. You'll all see soon enough. Here are his stats at the U of MN
gp g a pts pm
1996-97 40 20 17 37 30
1997-98 40 19 18 37 34
1998-99 42 13 23 36 32
1999-00 39 9 10 19 24
Totals 160 61 68 129 120

Not that bad of a career. Some would even say good. Why don't all you hockey all stars post your career stats at the division 1 level and we can compare them.

Great post goalie91 -
Hope my kids "struggle" like that at the "U" someday. I'm thinking if your name doesn't happen to be Broten or Erickson or Leopold or even Pohl, you may not want to call someone like Spehar insignificant. He seems to be a great kid who loves the game and I for one enjoy seeing him add to the broadcasts every year.

David Spehar was never going to live up to the expectations that people had for him when he came to the Gophers. He had a nice career, but most will think of him as a bust - which he certainly is not. I can name many other "stars" that did not put up the same numbers.

The fact is that Spehar was, is and will always be important to hockey in this state. What he accomplished at the high school level is the stuff legends are made of.

He grew up spending countless hours on the Glen Avon rink in Duluth honing his skills. And what skills! He was called chubby in an earlier post....he's always been chubby! It's a testament to him that he became the player he was without the benefit of a truly athletic body.

More than that, he's always been a good kid. He represented himself, his family, his school and the sport of hockey very well under the glare of an intense spotlight when he was in high school. Tell me how many of the young men that played in the tourney this past weekend could do the same with Spehar's class, humility and dignity?

I'm always amazed (saddened?) when people find it necessary to take shots at someone else in an effort to make themselves feel better. It's a sad way to go through life.

By the way, what coach other than Woog would drop a 5'7", 160 lb kid out in front of the net on the power play? Especially when that kid's talent was to find open ice and use the space behind the net effectively. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">

Eddie Shore--
Great post. You said everything I was thinking. Sounds like you are a Duluthian so greetings from an Ex-Duluthian who traded the Great Lakes for Cornfields.

Spehar was a great player period. To defend his lack of defense, the system East and Randolph used back then was to fly the weak side winger to stretch the ice. Spehar was just better at it than everyone else. It opens up the nuetral ice. Also, he was playing with some greta defensemen meaning he could take more chances. Besides that he was playing with some great offensive talent meaning they didn't spend a whole lot of time in the d end. In other words you didn't see him making great defensive plays because they were so good they were too busy playing offense to play great defense. Sometime the best defense is an amazing offense.

His state tournaments were remarkable, and I'm glad I got to skate with him for a year and watch him the rest of his career.

Just a side note: He was a decent high school golfer, along with being an extremely funny individual.

i can see where everyone is thinking he was a bust jsut becuase he had an aweosme high school career for a gopher fan like me it was kind of a bust...but with that size and his style it would be very hard to put up the numbers he did in high school...not all good high school players make great hockey players...and someone saying blake wheeler was as good as him is a joke wheeler plays class a spehar played aa and dominated more than anyone in the tournament did this year or in awhile the last i can think of is troy riddle but he also played aa...

Spehar was UNREAL at the high school level. What he did in college does NOT diminish the fact that he made the crowd go crazy every time he touched the puck in high school. He flourished in Randolph's system and he was a treat to watch.
