Anybody know of any players who have made the Section teams for the first phase of 16's and 17's...I know Ammerman, Lee, Vandevelde (spelling), Doth, and Sauer all made Section 8 17's....

How does neither S. Deutz or Hittle not make the team? There is no way they are worse than Bandar and Doth. Bandar was 4-21 and Doth has a GAA of 1.85 and a save % of 91. Deutz and hittle both had GAA less then 1.85 and save percentages higher than 91. How do they not make the team?

Selects 8A & 8AA

Post by Bigtimeguy » Tue Mar 23, 2004 8:00 am

I was at the tryouts and it had to be tough to pick 'em.
All the goalies looked good. The tryouts consisted of lot's of good defensive players. The Goalies did not get many shots. They should have done some 4 on 5's or 4 on 4's just to get the skaters loose and to get more shots on Goal.
Spencer D. looked real good on Saturday, but Sunday gave up a couple of goals that were save-able. The other goalies all played good too, and the evaluators could have taken any of the six.
Jeff Bander was with St. Cloud Apollo during the regular season and played with a poor defense in front of him all year. I'm sure all the goalies would to have loved to have Lee, Ammerman, Barta, Gnadt etc... play D for them.
Just a note the goalies who made the select 16 from last year were Frazee, Doth, Stalock, Poderzzay, Bander and I think Wichelo (spelling, from Brainerd).

What I meant on the last six goalies listed was they made the Select 16 FINAL 51 last year.
They were the top six goalies picked prior to the final two selected, Frazee and Stalock.

I had heard a rumor that Gnadt from MHD. was moved to a foward. Cory Johnson is the kid from MHD. not Kirby.

The goalies for the 17's were:

Spencer Deutz: Moorhead
Mike Haggert: Detroit Lakes
Charlie Doth: St. Cloud Tech
Erik Martinson: Roseau
Jeff Bandar: St. Cloud Apollo
Jay Clark: LOW

Clark probably had the best tryout, but as it goes, the best one sometime does not make it! All very competitive and had good tryouts.

Jeff Bandar

Post by suckhole00 » Tue Mar 23, 2004 10:58 pm

Jeff Bandar is an amazing goalie. Having played most of his highschool career with a poor apollo team his numbers have been down. Dont forget his freshman year, when St Cloud Apollo had a more respectable team. Having played with both bandar and doth, and watching spencer deutz prefromance at teh state tournament, id pick bandar over both of them.

I dont think spencer played at state. But i completely agree, Bandar and Doth are great goalies. I'd say bandar is the best in the section.

bandar

bandar has not looked so great when I've seen him play, granted I only saw 4 or 5 apollo games this year, he just wasn't that solid, even though the team sucked, i expected more.....we'll see how he plays in the section tournament for selects when he gets a shot to play good hockey....

Section 8 Goalies

Post by sieve33 » Wed Mar 24, 2004 11:54 pm

I also agree that all six goalies weren’t tested that much and all had great tryouts with no weak goals all weekend. Jay Clark should have been the goalie to go not Apollo. Jay let 2 or 3 goals the whole weekend and all of them coming on the last scrimmage on Sunday. Apollo was not tested and jay was and came up big.

I also want to bring up the goalie situation on select 16 for section 8. The MHD goalie Christian I believe was probably the best goalie there but let in about 5 weak goals on Sunday. The other goalie should have been the goalie with the offset blue and yellow colors. Roseau bantam goalie, he was great only letting in two goals all weekend and playing solid but instead they took the Alex goalie in which wasn’t fast and slow on his feet.

I understand it is hard to evaluate players especially goalies but I believe Eades really screwed up on his picks this year, but hey you are only as good as your next save and I hope these goalies prove me wrong. Good luck boys in Plymouth.

Sieve33
The Alex goalie was the best goalie there which is why he will be starting for Section 8 in Plymouth. Only let in 1 goal all weekend and that was a tip off of a shot from the blue line.

Section 8 goalie

Post by hockeyplaya » Fri Mar 26, 2004 12:53 pm

The section 8 goalie you are talking about is Derrick Swenson. He is a sophmore, and he has a lot of potential. He started some games at the end of the year for Alex, and should be the starter next year. He is really good for only being a sophmore in high school
