Hummel outplaying Lee in Championship

Post by KDavis20 »

Don't get me wrong Lee is a great player and will one day probably be a good pro but when i have watched him he has not impressed me that much. In the first two games of state he played well but didn't try because it wasn't a challenge and he should have played ushl this year. In the world juniors he sucked and should have never made it and been replaced by jack johnson. And in the championship game Hummel showed up to play and Lee didn't. I am not saying Hummel is neccesarily better but it seems like he shows up in big games while Lee always falls apart.

give me a break!! i know hummel is a great player, but of everyone i was looking forward top seeing play down there (the mr hockey candidates) i was by far least impressed by hummel. i can think of ONE TIME where he rushed the puck up the ice and didn't just give it up or bat it out of the zone. granted, each time he did get rid of it in a hurry it was a good play and usually found his teammates, but his lack of leadership and responsibility while on the ice was ridiculous. i know the state tourny was the only time i got ot see him this year, so i won't base any of his recognition solely on the tournament, but that was the big stage and he did not impress me whatsoever. he is a great defenseman and a smart player, but no where near the offensive threat of lee, nor should he deserve to be compared to lee, their styles of play are totally contradictory. again i am basing this solely on what i witnessed this past week(end). both great players, but no doubt which one had the better tournament, as far as "standout" players are concerned. hummel is consistent and plays great D, but not the total package as is lee.

ok so apparently defensemen have to rush the puck now to be good? hummel is a defensive defenseman who dominates in aha's defensive zone, not letting any good opportunities get to the net. he doesnt have to be rushing the puck and being offensive to dominate a game. everyone seems to be obsessed with stats, but even so, hummel's 48 points dominate lee's 27 this year. ok, yes, lee was in the world championship thing, but these guys play the same type of game, very physical and can both dominate a game defensively. don't try to base hummel's game off us this weekend, he is a great player and a great leader, oh and by the way, speaking of leaders, who led his team to a state championship? i would much rather have that to share with my teaammates than a mr. hockey trophy.

Kurt,

Where are you playing next year?

As far as Hummel goes, I have never understood the hype with this guy. We all got to see him play in 4 consecutive tournaments and never once has he impressed me. A previous poster is right. He never rushes the puck up ice. I would think that is an attribute that is pivotal with a defenseman. One thing in his favor is that he passes pretty well. But compared with Brian Lee, it's not even close. Or even compared to Brian Connely, it's not close. IMO, Brain Connely was the best defenseman in the tournament.

i really dont think it matters what you guys think of hummel. He is the one with two state championships, a third place, fifth place, and a full ride.

lee is fortunate enough to have had the media build him up and put him on a pedestal. he is a very good player but my opinion is that he is nowhere near where he is hyped to be. he has had and will continue to have opportunities that players with slightly less talent will not get because they don't have the name.

hummel is also a very good player on as solid a team as you will find in this state.

redninja, nice post, you really accomplished a lot with that. Keep up the positiveness (or I should say bitterness).

Hummel is doing things right, he stayed in high school four years, won two state championships, and is going on to play d1 hockey. Hummel over Lee

Post by Hockeyisthebest21 »

Hummel was way better than Lee in the championship game. Hummel is a steady defensive defensemen. Lee got burnt and looked like a fool. I believe a -3 rating means he was the one that played bad. Lee probably is better than Hummel, but not in that game. Iceman and cdhhockey you guys are exactly right. RedNinga you better learn something about hockey before writing that stuff. Hummel played better, he has the trophy that counts.

you got it, he might have upped him in the game, but he sure isn't what I've read the stars fans writing about him. Not a stand-out player, AHA played great transition plain and simple. Hummel better than Lee? In the championship.....yes, overall?.....not even close

how can you say not even close? I am not saying he is the best player in the world and definetely not saying he is a better player than lee, but he is solid and anyone in the state would love to have him on their team.

slapshot bg, I am not biased in evaluating but I am biased in the fact that I only saw Hummel in the tourney and got to watch Lee all year, so "not even close" was probably harsh, the best to the AHA kids though, even after the spuds took control of possession and shots AHA had an answer, Good transition is priceless.

icedreamer, so is good coaching. I think MHD's coach was simply outcoached by Trebil and that could have been a huge difference in the game.

Re: Morinville outcoached

Post by kermit »

I think coaching was a factor. Here's my reasons:

1) Moorhead played "not to lose." They were tight. This was something I anticipated all year.

2) Who pulls a goalie 6 minutes into the game, and puts the same kid back out in the waning moments with everything on the line? (Deutz did make a couple of big saves late.)

3) AHA scored a goal (their 3rd?) when a guy came out of the penalty box and got a breakaway. Morinville had a forward (Fisher) on the point for the second powerplay unit. As the PP wound down, I was waiting for him to get off the ice. He chose exactly the wrong moment to head for the bench..

4) Matt Becker was one of Moorhead's top forwards in the tournament, but he was buried on the third line and getting relatively little ice time until the third period of the final.

Unfortunately, this was one of Lee's worst games. In fairness though, on the first three AHA goals he was the only Spud back. He did get beat one-on-one on the first goal, and two-on-one on the second goal (very rare events this year), but he also was a man on an island. On the third goal he was in the bad position of trying to come off the bench and chase down a breakaway..

So what is your guess for the +/- average of the key players during the championship game? That being Hummel, Lee, Ammerman, etc.
