Warroad 11, The real cost of hockey to the school is alot less than you might think. I think this might hold true for most schools.
Follow this: Most hockey players are on their own until they hit 10th grade. Most, if not all, expenses are paid for by the parents.
Basketball starts at 7th grade. The school pays for coaches, court time, buses, and uniforms to name a few. The revenue in many towns is much less than the revenue from hockey.
Warroad isn't going to AA and I don't think that it has any thing to do with cost. They just prefer to stay class A. The AA school don't think much of A schools, I guess it makes them feel superior in some way, and I don't think Warroad thinks that class AA schools are such a big deal because they know that they can compete with most of them. Plus, its nice to get 3 days off in in March. Each to his own.

Do some of you threadheads read before you comment. I posted quite a ways back, and finally came back to some funny stuff. All we are saying.................is don't brag up your teams as being better than the Double A schools, when you won't even compete with them. I said earlier, we destroyed, in my opinion, the greatest high school event in the country by going to a 2 class system, and I'm not tooold to know that. Roseau has opted up, and there program is now thriving, after a 6 year (bad cycle). We don't need the two classes, we just need good hockey. The private school comment I made was made for one reason; to get players from being convinced that a private school would be better for little joe from Bloomington Jefferson. If you give all the Private Schools their own tournament, the kids might actually stay where they played youth hockey. I am from a Single A town, and I wish our team would have opted up a couple years back, but to many people settle for mediocrity.

i think everyone is loosing sight of what high school sports are about. "THE KIDS". Respect the participants. The student body does not get to pick what class they play in. A state tournament birth is the biggest thing to date in alot of those kids lives. Ask any kid that has played in a state tournament and they will tell you how cool it was and they will never forget the experience. High school sports is not about making money. Ninety percent of all high school sports do not bring money into the school system (thats bottom line figures) The schools have to do what is best for the kids. Move up to AA so all of us respect them or try to keep teachers? Warroad ( or so I am told) has told 12 teachers that next year there will be no money in the budget for their position and to look else where for positions. Getting everyones respect should come from running a school on a tight budget and how many of your alumni can look back at school and say I had a great education and a great time!!! not boy we should have been AA so everyone would remember us.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... sHockey at: 3/16/05 1:45 pm

Good point..Wloves. I am sure the not one hockey player in Warroad is upset that they only went to the A tournament. I am sure some think that kids are more happy to say that they competed that the AA level and didn't go anywhere than competing at the A level and having the experience of a state tournament. I guess people in warroad would rather have every hockey player have a chance to make it to state than every 5th or 6th one. I just can't figure out why so many people, from outside the area, have a obsession with warroad being single A. the idea of comparing AA/A is a pretty weak comparison in my opinion.

How many class are there in the other boys sports? Lets see:

6-Football
4-Basketball
3-Baseball
3-Wrestling
2-Cross country
2-Soccer
2-Swimming and Diving
2-Tennis
2-track
2-Hockey

Looks like WolvesHockey has it all figured out. We have different classes so that a smaller school and or community can have "like" ability competition and opportunities. Not a bad deal for the boys with a nine man football team to have the opportunity to be State Champions. High School sports is about and for the kids.

SO???? The cost of running to the cities or the range to play single A teams is cheaper than traveling to the cities to play AA teams??

Didn't Warroad make as many trips to the Metro area and the range this year as any AA school, outside of Moorhead?
Isn't the cost of staying in the Cities one extra day at the Class A tourney, while the AA schools play, expensive!

RLStars,

First, your comment seems to support 6 divisions for hockey also. Why not bring everybody to state.

If you want a state tournament with "like ability", 5 private A schools and warroad need to move up. Then maybe we'll see river lakes in the tourney!

Again, if you don't field a top level team, don't be bragging up how you could beat them all. Threads such as Warroad vs AA, A vs AA is the gap narrowing, and anything slapshooter posts.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

I believe the two class system is just fine, and also would like to see a few teams out there move up to AA and a few more need to move down to A. I'd be just as proud of my son if he played for a River Lakes state tournament team at A or AA. As I hear it, River Lakes (after all the co-op schools enrollment is added up) is one of the top AA size schools in the state. Can we compete for a Class AA state title? No. Could we at A? Yes. Maybe the MSHSL should let River Lakes play Class A until we go undefeated and take a state title. Until then, we'll play AA without complaint and be happy our kids even get the chance to play high school hockey in Minnesota.

Back to your original post, we have began skating A level youth hockey at bantams for 3 years, peewee 1 year. This year our bantam team won 3 games all year. Thats co-oping with CSA and having a total of 29 bantams tryout. Yeah I know, Warroad and some other successful youth programs have that many too. There are few if any second generation players in our association, unlike the rich hockey traditions spoke of with Warroad, Roseua, TRF etc.

Not sure where I said lets have six divisions for hockey though.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... Warroad's advantage is having 29 good hockey players try out, not just 29 skaters. All youth programs should be placed at the highest level they can compete. Winning 3 means you made a mistake playing the highest level. Not losing any and not playing the highest level also means you made a mistake.

I think that I have talked about this before, The mshsl was sure that wRROAD, I falls, Roseau AND A FEW OTHERS WOULD MOVE UP AND LET OTHER SCHOOL'S INTO A STATE TOURNAMENT. IT WAS THE ROSEAU AD;I AM PRETTY SURE' WHO FIRST SAID SCREW THEM, WE WILL STAY CLASS A. WE NEED TO REMEMBER THAT ROSEAU DIDN'T MOVE UP UNTIL SOME PARENTS OF A TEAM ,MUCH LIKE WARROAD'S 2004/2005, FELT THEY COULD TAKE IT ALL AND TALKED THE SCHOOL INTO MOVING UP. PRIDE WILL KEEP THEM THERE. THEY HAVE BEEN BASHING CLASS A TOO LONG TO MOVE DOWN NOW.

Why would you start this topic. The arguement will never end! BUT HONESTLY PEOPLE, DID YOU WATCH THE TOTINO-GRACE/WARROAD GAME? THE BEST GAME EVER IN THE HISTROY OF HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY!!!!!!! Without a doubt in my mind. It looked like an NHL game back and forth back and forth back and forth and so on. SERIOUSLY even in over time the game did not slow down. And they were both class A teams. alright class A had some bad teams in the state tourney, but so did AA. Whatever though.

Carpenter guy,
I will agree with you totally on Roseau being the small school but AHA does not fit the mold of a small school. Sure enrollment wise yes, you are right, they are a small school but when you can draw talent like AHA does the difference between a Roseau and AHA becomes vast.

JLS. I agree with you but believe the difference between the 2 is more because of location than the "ability to draw" talent. All schools can and do draw talent ,including northern schools.

But AHA is in Richfield with huge suburbs as adjoining neighbors. They have a lot bigger pool to draw from.
