Edina in sports Illustrated

Great mention of the Edina Hornets Hockey team in Sports Illustrated this week ( Moss on the cover). Could not happen to a better group of kids and coaches!! You had to like their tough style of play this year if you are a hockey fan.

The little snippet was good. Surprised to see a MN school in the Top 10 and even more surprised to not see another one in the Top 25. Personally I think they shoulda talked more about the tennis instead of the hockey. No offense, but the streak they have is purely amazing. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)">
Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

The article mentions 31 titles in the past 10 years. Here's the breakdown:

13 in Tennis
8 in Alpine Skiing
4 in Swimming
3 in Soccer
2 in Golf and....
1 in Hockey

Good for Edina, but I'd think a school like Cretin (consistantly in USA Today's top lists) would be ahead of Edina.

Edina vs Cretin

Cretin is private. Apples and oranges to some people.

Attendance?

The SI article claims that Edina is drawing 1500 a game. All that I have seen the last few years are lot of green bleachers.

I think the DeLasalle school that is talked about in SI is from California.

Yup, your thinking of a Football program that is so good it makes Eden Prairie look like a 9 man team.

Cretin's championships?

Post by diskman » Wed May 18, 2005 6:54 am

No, I didn't read the article. I just thought that might be a factor when whoever decides these things makes their picks.

You think Cretin should be in the top picks because...??? Do they have more total championships than Edina? You didn't say anything about that. Maybe the committee, or whoever, looks at a variety of championships - not just one or two sports.

Did I attack you in some way? Jeez <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek"> And yes I believe that Cretin should be in there not just because they have won a lot of titles over the years, but because they are consistently (if you read the article you would see that consistency is a big part) one of the top sports programs in the state and are also very good in academics. Like I said earlier, not taking anything away from Edina because they are a great program and superior school. This is just my opinion. If we wanted variety of championships, Totino has done a good job at that. All I have to say is read the article, it is interesting to see how other schools have done and what kind of enrollment #'s they have and the facilities they play in. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)">
Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

ER, I dont think CDH has won that many championships. Certainly not in the same league with the cakeaters.

I too think CDH is a great school but I dont think they have won more than 6-7 championships (probably Baseball and Football)...which is real good but not on par with the Hornets.

In fact, if you went back a ways, Edina won some BBall titles and, of course , 8 or 9 or so Hockey titles.

Besides , Cretin is a private school and all of their kids are mercenaries who are recruited and paid huge sums of money by all the rich parents, and have no connection with the school and none of them even live in St Paul and they all lie about being Catholic.

Whereas , those poor kids from Edina have had to fight their way out of the tough backstreets and alleys around 50th and 100. Man , those private schools have such an advantage.

Haha, alright. I was just thinking of the athletes that have come out of Cretin. Joe Mauer, Chris Weinke... those are some top notch guys. Not that ER hasn't done too shabby with Paul Martin, Dan Hinote, Joel Otto... but yea. I do see your point about Cretin and the private thing. That does definitely add another dimension to it. I would like to see what SI's list would be without private schools. I no longer am in possession of the magazine so I don't know how many of them were private, but I did notice that a lot of them had very small enrollments which surprised me. I hate to say it, but you have converted me. Edina does belong ahead of Cretin, but I still think Cretin maybe shoulda made the list. And that ER should be #1 <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> , but that's just me <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)">
Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

Edina in SI

Post by DumpandChase1 » Wed May 18, 2005 6:10 pm

Edina is clearly the top athletic and public academic school in the state. 119 state titles ( 9 hockey ), 31 in the last 10 years. I'm not sure who is second, I think it is Stillwater with around 70. I don't think Cretin has more than 20 maybe 10. I tried to look it up on the MSHSL web site but could not find a list of state championships. If anyone can find a list please post it.

Edina in SI

Post by goldy313 » Sat May 21, 2005 8:51 am

Clearly is only in the eye of the beholder.

Edina has won 82 team titles not 119, if you add Edina, Edina East and Edina West together it gets up to 119. But to be fair you'd have to count each town the same (Bloomington, Duluth, etc.) and then Edina would fall behind Duluth in total titles. Duluth Central alone has 61 titles in the various forms of skiing, add Duluth East's 30 and they have 91 in just two sports.

What is really amazing about Edina is in just how many different sports they've won titles in, basically everything except football and wrestling. No other school comes close to that.

Cretin has won 15 team titles, 10 in baseball 2 in Boys basketball, 1 in girls basketball, football and boys cross country. They like the other privates weren't allowed to compete in the MSHSL until 1974. Though Edina has very very few titles before 1974.

There is no link to a list of all champions, each sport on the MSHSL page has a link to records and yearbooks though. There each sport lists all their team and individual champions.

well, at least MN had a high school represented right? Maybe they should do a state-by-state ranking, since it is apples to oranges comaring MN to CA high schools. I mean, california is obsessed with sports like water polo.....how can a school that has water polobe placed above schools that have top-notch hockey programs? it doesnt seem right to me..ahh oh well, we all know MN schools dominate anyway, and in more than sports.

goldy, Good work. Those people in Rochester sure know how to get the stats right.

I think your research points out the advantage the big affluent suburbs have.

The people in Edina deserve a lot of credit. Hard work, volunteerism, community loyalty ,excellent coaching and great young people have to be part of the equation in order to have that much success. There are examples of communitites that have the numbers and the facilities that do not do nearly as well.

But it does help to have numbers, the facilities and the financial support.

It makes me chuckle when the "private school phobics" get on their rants about recruiting. I wonder why they dont chant "daddys money" when Edina is on the playing surface.

The article was about all high schools not just public. I don't think there is a public school called "St. Thomas Aquinas".
